The Pain of Future Wrongs – Chapter 6

Several days later...

"Piper, you ready need to slow down and rest," Paige said as she poured herself a glass of juice. "You do realize that you are pregnant, right?"

"Yes, of course I do," Piper sighed. "But sitting around all day will just drive me nuts."

Paige laughed as she tried to picture Piper sitting on the couch all day long. "Well, I'm sure you can find other things to do besides slaving away in the kitchen."

"Well, I can't quite do that when you and Phoebe keep insisting on babysitting Wyatt."

Phoebe walked into the kitchen as the two sisters continued the discussion. "Wyatt is becoming quite a handful now, you know. We don't want you running around trying to keep up with him."

Piper threw up her hands in frustration. "See what I mean?"

"Then again, you can perhaps try and spend some time with your other son?"

Piper sighed and sat down by the kitchen table. "You think I don't want to? It's just so weird though..."

"Weird? He's your son, Piper. How can spending time with Chris be weird?"

"Look, how am I supposed to react when Chris basically tells me that I hate him in the future? We are not exactly the most normal mother-son pairing, if you know what I mean."

Phoebe thought for a moment and decided to add her own insight. "Well, you do have a point, I guess. I still can't picture you hating Chris. Maybe he's being overly dramatic again."

Piper shook her head as she remembered Chris' revelation the other day. "No. I could feel it. He really believes that I hate him in the future. I just can't believe what a terrible mother I'm going to become!"

"Have you tried talking to Leo?" Paige suggested.

"Of course not! He doesn't even know about Chris yet."

"Are you planning to tell him?"

"Not really, if I can avoid it. I don't want him distracted from his Elder duties."

"Leo's his father, shouldn't he have a right to know?" Phoebe argued.

"Look, I really don't want to think about this right now. I'm more worried about my son."

"Has Chris said anything to you?"

Piper shook her head sadly. "Nope. He hasn't said much to me at all...not to mention the fact that he's kept himself locked up in the room for the past few days."

"Why don't I go talk with him?" Paige offered.

"Would you?" Piper asked hopefully. At this point, she would try anything to mend her relationship with Chris.

"Of course," Paige replied cheerfully. "Anything for my nephew!" With that, she made her way upstairs. Stopping in front of the closed door to Chris' room, she knocked gently.

"The door's not locked," Chris replied.

Opening the door, Paige found Chris lying on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. "Hey," she called out softly.

"Hi Aunt Paige," Chris answered with a weak smile.

"You alright?"

"I guess," he answered not-too-convincingly. "Did Mom ask you to check up on me?"

"Well, not exactly. We're all a little concerned about you."

"I'm fine," Chris answered. "Thanks for asking, though."

"Anything for my nephew."

"You used to say that to me all the time," Chris said softly.

"So I guess I was a pretty decent aunt?"

Chris smiled at that question. "Yeah, you were pretty cool."

"Cool, huh? I can live with that." Pausing for a moment, Paige decided to continue. "Piper really does want to get to know you. She wants to know what you're thinking about...help you out when you're facing difficulties. You know, the general things mothers do..."

"I think she should be more concerned for Wyatt's safety right now," Chris answered matter-of-factly.

"Well, I'm sure she is concerned about that. But that doesn't mean she can't worry about you too."

"Wyatt's the important one," he whispered. "He always was..."

Chris' words hung in the air and the atmosphere in the room became tense. "Chris, you don't believe that..."

"I doesn't matter what I believe, Aunt Paige. It's the truth. Isn't Wyatt the reason why I came back to the present?"

"Is that why you're holding a grudge against Piper?"

"I don't hold a grudge against Mom."

"Then why won't you talk to her?"

Chris turned to look at Paige. "How am I supposed to act around her? I just told her so many things about the future that I shouldn't have. This whole situation is just so awkward."

"I know, Chris," she said sympathetically as she hugged him. Chris returned the hug gratefully. "But you have to at least try. You need each other."

After giving some thought to Paige's words, Chris relented. "I guess you're right."

"That's my nephew," Paige said encouragingly.

The two slowly made their way downstairs, where Piper and Phoebe were still discussing the issue. Paige and Chris walked into the kitchen but stopped dead in their tracks when they noticed that there was a visitor.

"What are you doing here?" Chris asked vehemently.

"Chris, why didn't you tell me?" Leo asked, a hurt look on his face.

"Why do you care?"

"Chris!" Piper said sternly. "He's your father!"

"I don't have a father," Chris spat. "In my mind, he was dead from the day I was born."

Both Piper and Leo were visibly stung by Chris' words. "Chris, I don't know what happens in the future," Leo began.

"Save it, Leo," Chris cut him off. "Just save it."

"You can't just brush me off..." Leo continued.

"Get out," Chris demanded in a low but hard voice.

"I'm not going to leave until..."

"Either you leave or I'll leave," Chris threatened, clearly losing control of his temper. When Leo refused to budge, Chris just glared at his father. "Fine, I guess I'll leave then." In a swirl of lights, Chris orbed out.
