The Pain of Future Wrongs – Chapter 31

Ryan flew into a blinding rage and he launched his fist at Wyatt. Ryan's fist found its target in the form of Wyatt's face, sending the older boy sprawling to the floor. "You bastard!! You knew this all along!!"

Wyatt struggled to his feet, his hand rubbing his tender cheeks. "What did you want me to do?" he hissed. "Break their hearts by telling them the truth?"

"Oh, like they wouldn't freak out when they find out?" Ryan retorted sarcastically.

"Look, I said that getting the poison out was next to impossible, not downright impossible," Wyatt defended himself.

Ryan didn't have a response to Wyatt, but found himself spiraling into despair. The emotional roller coaster that he had been riding was really taking a toll on the young man.

Wyatt cautiously approached his younger brother and hugged him. "You and I both know that Chris is notorious for achieving the impossible. How many people do you know who could come back to the past and actually change the future?" He paused as he let the words sink in for Ryan. "If he could save me by coming back to the past, then it proves that there is no such thing as impossible for Chris. We can't give up now, Ryan."

Ryan sighed in defeat, grudgingly accepting the fact that Wyatt was right. "If anything happens to Chris, I'm holding you personally responsible, Wyatt," he threatened before going upstairs, leaving Wyatt alone with Chris.

Wyatt sighed and sat down beside Chris again. Despite his exterior confidence, Wyatt's heart was heavy with worry. "What if I'm wrong?" he asked himself. "What if we can't get the poison out?" He shook himself from his thoughts, knowing that he can't doubt himself now.

Wyatt turned to look at his unconscious brother and thought of all the good times that they had shared. At one point in time, they were inseparable. They looked out for each other and they loved each other. At first, Wyatt was always protective of Chris and Chris looked up to Wyatt. As they got older, the relationship matured from one of protector/protected to that of two equal brothers.

He hated how Chris never got the affection and appreciation that he deserved. Chris never complained openly, but he knew that his younger brother was hurt by this treatment. Wyatt knew he should have done something sooner. He always had his parents' attention and in hindsight, he should have used his influence to pound some senses into them. However, the sad reality was that he never spoke up. Sure, he hinted at his parents on numerous occasions, but he never put his foot down, so to speak.

Wyatt's body tensed as he felt Chris in pain. He looked down and saw that his brother was still unconscious. His confusion was soon dispelled as he realized what was happening. In his sleep, Chris was trapped in a nightmare that would not end. There was no way for Chris to wake up from the horror, at least not until the poison was extracted. Wyatt's sense of panic began to intensify as he realized that his brother was suffering in his dreams and there was nothing that he could do to help.

In his despair, he decided to try talking to Chris and hope that some of the words would get through and help his brother through this ordeal.

"Hey Chris," he began tentatively. It felt awkward for him to talk to Chris like this. After all, they haven't had a brotherly chat ever since he had begun to turn. During that time, the two brothers had gradually drifted apart.

"I don't even know if you can hear me right now, but I'm going to try anyways," Wyatt continued, never taking his eyes off of Chris. "I don't even remember how long it has been since I've talked to you like this, but you know what? I've missed these chats for the longest time..."

"I won't even try to tell you that I understand everything you went through because no matter how hard I try, I don't think I can fully comprehend it. All I know is that you've been through so much...too much. And knowing that I've caused so much, if not all, of this pain...I just can't believe it sometimes," Wyatt continued as his voice began to waver. He took a deep breath to compose himself before delving on.

"I know that Mom and Dad never treated you too well...and in a way, it's my fault. Even though I knew that they were being unfair to you by always focusing on me, I never really said anything. But I also remember how you still treated me the same way...you still treated me like your brother. You never complained to me...never resented me. Even when I started to turn, you still believed in me. Even when I started to turn Mom and Dad against you, you..." Wyatt couldn't continue. His tears were flowing freely down his face and he buried his face in his hands.

It wasn't until several minutes later that Wyatt felt strong enough to continue. "I know you never meant to do it, but you know what, lil' bro? You've really put me to shame. I feel so ashamed of everything that I've done...but it kills me to know that even to the last moment, even when everyone in the world had abandoned me, you still stood by me."

"I thought that you coming back to the past was to destroy me. I thought you wanted to take my place as the most powerful being. Can you say stupid?? What was I thinking? I thought you betrayed me...but now I know. You never stopped believing in me. You knew that I could be good again. Oh god..." he sobbed again, losing even more control of himself this time.

As he was wracking in sobs, Wyatt was pulled into a hug. He opened his eyes to see Piper, her eyes red from crying. "Mom..." he whispered.

The mother and son cried on each other's shoulders as they each contemplated their actions. "I'm so sorry, Mom..." Wyatt cried.

"I love you, Wyatt," Piper assured her son. "Remember that."

"Even after everything I've done?" Wyatt questioned.

"That wasn't you," Piper shook her head. "This is the real you."

Wyatt shook his head furiously. "That doesn't change that fact that I've done all this evil..."

"You can still make things right," Piper argued. "I have faith in you."

"You shouldn't..."

"Chris never lost faith in you..."

"I know. I don't think I'll ever understand why..."

"Because you're his brother. Because he loves you."

Both Piper and Wyatt were jolted from their memories by a frantic Ryan. "Mom!! Chris is fading fast!! Dad!!!"

Everyone ran or orbed into the room at Ryan's panicked cries. Leo tried again to heal his son to no avail. Piper was sobbing as her crying sisters supported her to keep her from collapsing. Ryan and Wyatt sat beside Chris in shock.

Leo sighed in defeat as he realized that no matter how hard he tried, he could not heal his son. He had failed Chris in the future and he failed his son again.

A bright white light flooded the room and everyone shielded their eyes from this sudden burst of light. When everyone opened their eyes again, they saw two young men in the room.

Thinking they were demons, Piper tried to freeze them to no avail.

"We come in peace," one of the young men replied. At the same time, the other man sent a large bolt of energy into Chris. The sudden surge of energy caused Chris to cry out loud in agony. He writhed on the bed as the energy overpowered him.

The Charmed Ones tried to attack the intruders and save Chris, but their magic were easily repelled. Wyatt, forgetting that he no longer had powers, tried to push the intruders out of the way, but was sent flying into the wall instead.

Before everyone could regroup to launch another attack, the two intruders were gone, leaving everyone puzzled and confused. Wyatt was the first to notice that Chris was awake.

"Chris?" Wyatt called out, hardly believing his eyes. "You're awake!!"

Chris sat up from the cot, trying to regain his senses after his long sleep. As he saw Wyatt, however, his eyes shot wide open and he pulled back. "Wyatt..." he gasped.

"You're going to be okay, lil' bro," Wyatt said, hardly able to contain his joy.

"Chris..." Piper whispered, overcome with joy.

Chris backed himself into the corner, trying to put distance between himself and the rest of the people in the room. "Stay away, Wyatt..." he warned, his eyes wide with fear.

Wyatt was visibly hurt by Chris' response but he refused to let it diminish his joy at Chris being okay.

"Chris, it's okay," Piper coaxed. "Everything is okay now..."

Chris looked at everyone incredulously. "Nothing is okay!!!" Chris lashed out. "Nothing will ever be okay," he continued.

"Calm down, Chris," Piper said softly, not wanting to provoke Chris.

Chris shook his head in disgust. "I don't need this..."

"Don't do this, Chris..." Piper pleaded.

"Since when did any of you care anyways? And now that you have your perfect son back again," he said, glaring at Wyatt, "I'll just make myself scarce."

With that, Chris orbed out.
