The Pain of Future Wrongs – Chapter 32

Everyone just stood in the room after Chris orbed out, not quite knowing what to do. After a while, everyone's eyes turned to Wyatt.

"What?" he asked defensively, bewildered and somewhat threatened by everyone's accusing stares. "Wait, you think I know who those two people were?"

"Well, you were the ruler of all evil," Phoebe interjected, adding a hint of sarcasm in her voice.

"I don't know who they were or what they did to Chris," Wyatt defended himself. "I swear!!"

"You know what, that doesn't really matter right now," Paige interrupted. "I think it's more important that we find Chris?"

"I know where he is," Leo added as everyone turned to look at him. "But I don't think he wants to see me right now."

"Take me there," Wyatt replied. "I have to speak with him."

"Oh no you don't," Ryan cut in, clearly annoyed. "I'm not letting you near Chris."

Wyatt threw up his hands in exasperation. "I don't have any powers, remember? What can I possibly do to him??"

"Do you really think Chris wants to see you?" Phoebe asked.

"Probably not, but I really need to see him," Wyatt pleaded. "Please??"

After more hesitation, everyone finally came to a reluctant agreement. Leo orbed Wyatt to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge and then promptly returned to the manor. Wyatt struggled to keep himself from falling as the wind blew in his face. Chris' back was turned towards him and the younger Halliwell didn't appear to notice the presence of a visitor.

"Chris?" Wyatt finally called out tentatively.

Chris spun around at the sound of Wyatt's voice and the two brothers' eyes locked their gazes. "What are you doing here?" Chris asked.

"I wanted to talk to you."

"There's nothing to talk about."

"I think we have a lot to talk about, actually."

"Why can't you leave me alone? What did I ever do to you?" Chris lashed out.

Wyatt looked hurt by Chris' outburst. "I just wanted to repair what was damaged," he finally answered.

Chris scoffed at his brother's apparent contrition. "You can't repair something that no longer exists, Wyatt."

Wyatt's mind reeled at the comment. It was as if Chris had just slapped him across the face. "You don't mean that..." he whispered.

"Whatever..." Chris muttered with total disinterest.

"I'm sorry for everything that I did."

"Sorry? You're sorry??" Chris shouted. "Do you know how much blood is on your hands? All you have to say is sorry??"

Wyatt knew that Chris was right. No matter how many times he apologized or how horrible he felt, he could never erase the fact that countless innocent victims had died at his hands. He blinked back his tears and looked at his younger brother, who seemed to have lost his innocence. The Chris that was standing before him was jaded, bitter, and cynical, no doubt another result of Wyatt's evil ways. "Forgive me, Chris...please..."

"You think everything is that simple?"

"Chris..."

"I've said it once and I'll say it again. You can't always undo the wrongs that you commit, Wyatt. The damage is done and there is nothing that you can do to change that. You killed my best friends...you killed Rachel...Rachel died because of YOU!!!"

"Please, Chris...please..." Wyatt begged. It was a shock for Chris to see his brother like this. The once powerful and evil Wyatt was now in tears and begging for forgiveness. This was something that Chris thought he would never witness.

Chris hesitated as an inner struggle took place. Part of him wanted to rip Wyatt to shreds but another part wanted to pull him into a hug. Before he could make a decision, however, Wyatt vanished from his sight. For a moment, Chris thought he had been tricked by his brother yet again, that Wyatt really still possessed magical powers.

As Chris was about to lash out in anger, a movement in the distance caught his attention. His eyes widened in horror as he realized that it was Wyatt plunging towards the water. As fast as he could, Chris orbed out and caught his brother in midair just as he was about to crash into the water. Holding Wyatt tightly, he orbed them back to the top of the bridge.

Once they rematerialized, Chris let go of Wyatt and stared at his brother. For the first time, he saw how vulnerable and fragile his older brother was. He was only a shell of the evil tyrant that had terrorized his world. "What the hell, Wyatt?" he asked, more gently this time.

"You're right, Chris," Wyatt lamented. "Nothing I do will ever change the evil I did. No matter what, I'll always be a mass murderer."

"Jumping off the bridge is not something I would expect from you, Wyatt..."

"I'm nothing now," Wyatt whispered. "I have nothing left..."

Chris grabbed his brother's shoulders and shook some sense into him. "What are you trying to do? Mom would never survive if you died...neither would Dad..."

Wyatt looked at his brother with glassy eyes. "They still have you and Ryan..."

Chris let out a laugh that was a cross between sarcasm, bitterness, and amusement. "In case you haven't noticed, Ryan and I don't quite have the same standing with them as you do."

Wyatt just looked away, ashamed once again of his role in planting all this bitterness in Chris' heart.

"The point is," Chris continued, "killing yourself won't solve anything and is not an option, Wyatt. There are too many people who care about you..."

"Not the person who matters most though..." Wyatt muttered.

"What?" Chris asked, missing most of Wyatt's comment.

Wyatt decided not to repeat his comment, but looked at his brother with remorse. "Christopher, I know that I can never undo all the hurt and pain that I've caused. But I really need you by my side...I'll do anything...anything that you ask..."

Chris' breath became ragged as he took in his brother's words. "Anything?" he finally asked.

Wyatt nodded, his eyes becoming hopeful. "Just say it and I'll do it..."

Chris looked thoughtful as Wyatt waited. "Well, there are quite a few things that I could want from you that would help ease the pain," he began slowly. "But come to think of it, there really is only one thing that I want from you..."

"Whatever it is, it's yours," Wyatt answered quickly.

"You don't even know what I was going to ask yet," Chris replied, an astonished expression on his face.

"Doesn't matter," Wyatt answered. "I already told you that I would do anything."

Chris held his brother's gaze and silence came between them. "I just want my brother back..." he whispered as he pulled Wyatt into a tight hug. "I've missed you..." Chris said as he choked back on his tears.

Wyatt could not help but cry as well. He finally had what he so desperately needed. He buried in face in Chris' shoulders and cried. "I've missed you too, lil' bro....I'm so sorry, Chris..."
