The Pain of Future Wrongs – Chapter 35

Chris felt uneasy as his family stared at him. No one spoke and Chris felt the silence choking him. He remained in his awkward position, praying that someone would just say something. Anything.

"Christopher Halliwell," Piper began in her angry motherly tone. "What did you think you were doing?" she demanded.

Chris struggled to his feet as he tried to think up an answer. "Mom...I..uh...umm..." he looked over to Wyatt, pleading with his older brother to help him out.

Before Wyatt could respond, Chris felt himself being pulled into a tight hug. He felt Piper's body tremble as she sobbed, burying her face in his chest. "Don't you ever do that again..." she cried.

Chris felt an immense sense of guilt as he saw his mother's grief and felt her pain. "I'm so sorry, Mom...I...."

"Shh, it's okay. You're back...that's all that matters."

Chris hugged his mother once again as he enjoyed the warmth of Piper's touch. As Piper released her embrace, Chris went to hug everyone else.

"No more ditching us, Chris," Ryan mock chastised his older brother. "You're starting to form a nasty habit, you know."

"Damn right," Wyatt continued with a smirk that almost hid the unshed tears. "Ryan, I guess you'll have to assume Chris' role as the responsible one from now on."

Chris rolled his eyes at his brothers' teasing remarks. It actually felt good to interact and banter with both of his brothers. Despite the joy that he felt, however, the remarks from the two strange men still lurked in his mind. He knew that the road ahead would be a difficult one, and regardless of what he was told by two strange beings, he didn't want to burden his family with this information.

"Chris?" Paige asked, interrupting his thoughts. "You okay?"

Chris put a smile on his face before answering. "Of course, just a little tired."

"Off to bed then," Piper ordered. I'll call you when dinner's ready.

"But Mom..." Chris protested, much to the amusement of everyone else in the room.

"No arguments. Go!" Piper answered. "You're grouchy when you're tired, and I don't want a grouchy son wreaking havoc around the house when I'm making dinner."

Chris tried to look indignant but his smile gave his true feelings away as he obediently headed off to bed. As Chris rested on his bed, a million thoughts were swirling in his mind. All of these thoughts, however, revolved around his supposed destiny, something that he still didn't quite understand.

He was so deep in thought that he didn't even notice his door opening. He was only alerted to someone in his room when the visitor sat on his bed.

"What's on your mind?" Ryan asked with a smile.

"Nothing much," Chris responded, not wanting to get into the details of what was really bothering him.

Ryan stared at the floor upon hearing Chris' response, feeling hurt by his brother's refusal to tell him the truth.

"What's wrong, Ryan?" Chris asked as the protective big brother in him emerged to the surface.

"You used to tell me everything," Ryan answered, still staring at the floor.

Again, the feelings of guilt overwhelmed Chris. He sat up and put his hand on Ryan's shoulder. "Ryan, you know that I would trust you with my life, right?" Ryan nodded dejectedly, still not looking at Chris in the eye. "Would you do the same for me?" he continued.

Ryan looked up with a puzzled expression. "You mean trust you with my life?"

Chris nodded and smiled.

"You know I would. You're the only person I'd trust my life to..."

Chris squeezed Ryan's shoulders gently. "I need you to trust me, Ryan. There's a lot that I can't tell you right now, but trust me that I will never hurt you."

Ryan thought about Chris' words and finally agreed. "I trust you, Chris. But you're worrying me...this sounds really serious."

Chris flashed one of his trademark smirk-smiles. "Nothing that I can't handle."

Ryan laughed at his brother's response. "And people say you're the modest one," he joked. "Anyway, dinner's gonna be ready in thirty minutes. Don't make me come up to drag you downstairs."

"Yes sir!" Chris answered with a laugh as Ryan headed back downstairs.

Chris felt himself drifting off to sleep, his many worries causing him to become exhausted. He was just about to doze off when the door to his room opened again. The sound of the door opening jerked Chris awake.

"I didn't know you were asleep," Wyatt said with an apologetic look. "I'll come back."

"Well, you've already woken me up, so you might as well tell me what you came to say," Chris answered, trying to sound annoyed but letting Wyatt know that he was just teasing him.

"I said I was sorry!" Wyatt shot back with a smirk on his face. Oh how he missed these times that he shared with Chris, but he was grateful to get a second chance.

"Sure, sure," Chris rolled his eyes. "What's up, Wy?"

"I was going to ask you the same thing."

"Come again?"

"Well, one minute you decide that there's nothing left for you here and decide to go back to the future. The next minute you reappear out of nowhere," Wyatt explained. "Oh and did I forget to mention that you've got a million thoughts swirling around in that complicated head of yours?"

"You're starting to sound like Aunt Phoebe," Chris teased.

Wyatt clutched his chest with his hands in mock hurt. "That was cruel!"

"I know..." Chris admitted. "The truth hurts sometimes," he laughed before Wyatt bashed him with a pillow. "That was soooo mature, Wyatt!"

"Seriously, is something wrong?"

Chris shifted uncomfortably in his bed. "Of course not," he answered a little too quickly.

Wyatt chuckled at Chris' response. "You know, I don't understand how Mom and the aunts kept getting fooled by you, 'cause you're one lousy liar."

"Ha ha ha," Chris replied, rolling his eyes.

"I mean it, Chris. I know I haven't been a good brother..."

Chris cut his brother off before he could go on. "Don't even go there, Wyatt. We've already been through this. The old Wyatt was just an imposter. You're the real Wyatt."

"I just want to help you, Chris. You've already done so much..."

"I'll be fine, Wyatt. Just trust me, okay?"

Wyatt sighed and agreed reluctantly. "Somehow I get the distinct impression that you've already had a similar conversation earlier."

Chris was about to answer when they heard Piper yelling from downstairs. "CHRIS!!! WYATT!!! Get your asses down here now! Demon attack!"
