Part 1- The Many Meanings of life

She sat there, staring at the dark, swirling liquid as it whirled dizzily in the Styrofoam cup. Coffee. Well that was a relative term, the LEP weren't known for their coffee, or anything edible really. So much for armies running on their stomachs. Holly chuckled, wasn't life obscure sometimes? Lifting the cup to her mouth, she drained the warm "goodness" in one swig and crushed her cup. Sighing, she pushed herself up and strode towards the door, another day, another battle. Sometimes life wasn't just obscure, it as like wading through a large vat of slime.

Out in the corridor, Holly blinked, dispelling any last vestiges of sleep. In an LEP corridor, you had to keep your wits about you, especially if Root was on the prowl. Commander Julius Root was the LEP's current (and reddest) boss. He had the ability to go from a casual rose to deepest crimson in two seconds. A record, no one else had managed to beat in several centuries. But along with being the reddest, he was the best, in Captain Short's opinion that is. She would never admit it to his face, and sometimes barely believed it herself, but he had the ability to make everybody better themselves just by shouting. His greatness aside, he was still not a faerie you would want to spend an overly long time with. So, when a petrified sprite came stumbling past muttering something along the lines of "Beetroot", "puce", "coming", Holly knew it was time to clear the area. Pity she wasn't fast enough……….

"Short!"

Brilliant, so close……….

"My office. Now!"

Holly, who had temporarily been frozen, slowly pivoted on the spot and trudged off behind her boss, trying to ignore trouble Kelp's slightly amused look and Chix Verbil's wolf whistle. Forget obscure and slime, life was down right unfair!
