Disclaimer: I don't own any of these characters. I know that. You know that. And J. K. Rowling and Scholastic definitely know that.
Author's Note: This chapter was SO much fun to write. Don't worry: the torture doesn't end with this chapter. I'm going to have to update a few other stories, so I hope this long chapter will tide you over for a while!

L.M's.E.W.—Thanks! I didn't try to rush this chapter, but it was so much fun that it came out pretty fast.
Frankie Beeblebrox—Remus is so much fun! Hehe, well it was time to make Lily a little uncomfortable too. She can't just have a walk in the park. :::grin::: I'm not sure where the cologne came from. One of those things that just kind of happens. I hope all's well with you, I'll email as soon as I get a chance.
Miss Lady Padfoot—Thanks, Katie!

Elladora D. Jobberknoll—Elladora. That sounds like such a seriously cool name. Where did you find it? Hehe. Sirius singing in the shower for two hours is only entertaining to us because we don't have to hear it; I imagine him as being an even worse singer than I am. I guess all he's good for is a pretty face.
Sakura—I got halfway through Hamlet but never finished it. I think my favorite play is Inherit the Wind. I've never seen it preformed, but I love the words.

Gwendolyn James—Thanks! Remus is one smart cookie! He's totally going to have fun with them.
Chapter 17: Moonless Chat with Moony
James crossed the grounds through the grass and came to the water's edge. The sun was al but gone and there'd be no moon tonight. James took off his shoes, lifted the hem of his robes, and waded into the almost warm shallows for a moment, and then the sun was gone, taking the last rays of heat with it. James shuddered and climbed onto a large rock to sit and put his shoes and socks back on. He hugged his knees to him and waited. Where was Remus? He hugged his knees to him and waited. Where was Remus? He just had to find out what was going on between him and Lily. If something was going on, why would they bother hiding it? Remus wouldn't keep a secret like that, not from James, not from his best friends. James had never betrayed Remus or his secrets. Remus had no reason to be sneaking behind his back. There had to be another answer here somewhere.
The person who appeared to be James Potter was determined to do her best to keep Remus from talking to the real James. She went around the room to Nikki, Alex, Sirius, Peter, and a couple other people she could call in favors with. After Remus cleaned up some more from Quidditch pracice, and came down to the common room he was hounded with, "help us with our homework", "let's go to the kitchens, Reem", "Moony, I wanna go prank the Slytherins," and "you promised me a chess match, Lupin". He made what excuses he could, found someone to occupy Lily for a little while (a first year was feeling ill and refused to go to the hospital wing unless the Head Boy took her), and finally made it out of the common room.
He made sure to avoid any route the person who looked like James Potter might take to the hospital wing, and went out to the grounds with all speed, the gears in his mind turning quickly.
Once outside, Remus easily spotted the redhead, sitting on a rock a few feet out in the water, knees drawn in. Remus made his way quietly and quickly. Lack of moonlight was no deterrent to him. He preferred moonless nights, no reminder of his monthly torment under the influence of the orb.
He reached the water's edge and took a step in, not caring about his shoes. He made no sound until his hand was on the redhead's shoulder. "Hey, Lillers."
James was startled. Remus had just snuck up on him! He knew Remus could be pretty quiet if he wanted, part of the irony was that the loud one (Sirius) had the name Padfoot rather than Remus. "Hi." There clearly was not enough room for two of them on this rock. He'd have to get down. He felt like rolling his eyes, but instead started untying his shoe.
"Don't bother," Remus said, attempting a charming smile. He picked the redhead up from around the waist and gently set her/him down on her feet without allowing her/him to touch the ground.
James blinked and sat down next to the nearest tree to tie his shoe back up again. Maybe this was a bad idea. "What did you want to talk to me about?" he asked, trying to sound casual.
"Us."
"Us?"
"You and me, Lillers."
"What about you me, Remus?"
"Remus?" He made a sad face. "That hurts. You always call me 'Re' when we're together like this. Why not now?"
"Sorry, er, Re. I'm a little distracted tonight. I was supposed to tutor a couple of kids this week and I forgot, and they failed their test. So I've got to go to their professor tonight and beg for a retest."
"Is that all?" Remus asked, sitting down beside James.
"Well…" James decided Remus was sitting much too close. "That and my boyfriend James is going to give me a flying lesson tonight." Maybe Remus would get the hint and back off. Although, James thought, if there really was something going on with Remus and Lily, the boyfriend thing ought to make him pretty mad.
"If you wanted to learn to fly, why didn't you ask me to teach you?"
Definitely too close. "I don't know. I thought it might be weird."
Remus took a chance. "You've already told me you think I'm a much better flyer than James is."
"What?" James tried (and failed) to keep his voice calm. Lily thought Remus was a better flyer? That was completely uncalled for!
"You said my turns were better, and I was less reckless." His suspicions were nearly confirmed, but either way he looked at this, Lily or James, this next step would not be easy.
"Oh. Right. His dives are much steeper though. More daring. Exciting."
Remus took a deep breath and slowly put his arm around the redhead, leaning his head on her shoulder.
James flinched. He couldn't take this. This was just not going to happen. Ignore arm around shoulders, it leads to head on shoulder. Ignore head on shoulder, it leads to kissing. Not going to happen. Ew! Best friend grossness alert. He got up and scrambled away as quickly as he could. "Just…just you stay away from me! Don't touch me!"
Remus tried on to laugh. "What's the matter, James?" he asked innocently.
James didn't notice the use of his proper name. "Just you stay far away from me or I'll hex you to the bottom of the lake and leave you there! I'll throw wolfsbane in your sheets! Hang you with a silver chain! Stay away from me!"
"Calm down, Prongs."
"What, I will not calm down! Did I give you any sign that it was okay to put your arm around me? Huh? Did I? Wait, what did you call me?"
"James. Prongs. James Potter. What am I supposed to call you? Lily Evans, my dearest," he mocked.
"What do you know?" James asked warily.
"As much as you look like Lily Evans right now, you aren't her."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well, for one thing, Lily hasn't worn her hair down since third year when James, you, teased her and said that her hair was so bright and all over the place that it looked like her head was on fire. Then you poured pumpkin juice over her head."
"To put the fire out," murmured James, remembering.
"And she's worn her hair up neatly everyday of Hogwarts since then."
"What else makes you think I'm not who I look like I am?"
"Causing trouble in class, taking care of 'James' when he fainted, saying you were better than James Potter at Quidditch…do I need to go on?"
James set his jaw and didn't say anything.
"My guess would be that the two of you somehow changed places. I think you must have tricked her into it though. Lily wouldn't do such a stupid thing. Or maybe the whole thing was an accident. It doesn't matter though. You aren't Lily. You're James. I want to hear how this happened."
"What does it matter?"
"I'm interested in knowing. And since you were trying to hide the fact that you switched places, I figure you must have a good reason. So I want to hear it. When exactly did you switch? Less than a week ago I'm sure…unless you did better being each other early on and escaped my notice for strange behavior."
James wondered how much to tell.
Remus could sense his hesitation. "I won't tell a soul. Just satisfy my own curiosity."
"Monday. Well, Sunday night. We wanted to see who had the tougher life. That's all there is to it."
Remus nodded. "Makes sense. Monday was the day you both decided to serenade our Transfiguration class."
James nodded and didn't say anything else.
"So who one?"
"Who won what?"
"Who has the tougher life?"
"I don't know. She's still having trouble being me."
"Whereas you've become an expert at being Lily Evans?"
"At least I'm not…" He couldn't even think of something he was succeeding with that Lily had trouble with normally. "At least I'm making her look good."
Remus looked at him closely. "Are you wearing glitter eye shadow? I know Lily doesn't own any of that."
"How do you know she doesn't?"
"Because she hates any and all forms of makeup. She believes in inner beauty and doesn't see much point in putting goop and powder on her face just to try and impress a guy. She says if a guy is impressed with something as stupid as that, he's too shallow for her to even be thinking of."
James blinked. Was that really how she felt? How did Remus know that? "How do you know that?"
"I'll let Lily fill you in if she wants to. If she doesn't want to, then I can't help it."
James glowered at him with two green eyes.
"Anything else you want to tell me? Like how you traded places? When you'll trade back?"
"No," James said stubbornly.
"Have it your way. But I wouldn't tell Lily that I know if I were you."
"Why not?"
"Well, she might feel weird in the dormitory if she knew that now that I know."
"Oh. I guess that makes sense. Alright then." James wondered. Just when had Remus figured out what was going on? He tried to go over the clues in his head, to see who else might know.
"Which teacher do you have to meet with?"
"What?" he asked, distracted.
"You said you were meeting with a professor tonight. Which one?"
"Turpin."
"C'mon. I'll walk you back to the castle," Remus offered.
They walked back silently. James turned to go down to the dungeon, Remus went up the marble staircase. When Remus was at the top of the first flight of stairs, James called to him. "Remus?"
He turned back to face James. "Yes?"
"You would tell me if there was something going on between you and Lily romantically, wouldn't you?"
Lily watched from her window. It was no good. She couldn't see anything that was going on. One shadowy figure was waiting; she assumed it was James. After a while, a second one joined the first. The two figures moved over to the tree, out of sight. After awhile, they came into view again, walking back to the castle together. She sighed. She'd just have to wait for them to come back.
It didn't even occur to her to check the Map. Not of course that she knew how to use it yet.
James knocked on the door to Professor Turpin's office.
"Come in!"
James entered and saw the Professor by his desk, painting it of all things. "Sir, could I please speak to you about two of your students?"
"I'm not permitted to discuss other students' work with you, Miss Evans."
"I understand that, sir." He had to make this sound Lily-ish. "Among the students I tutor are two of your younger pupils named Nikki and Alex."
"Yes. I know them. They just failed a major test. You've been working with them?" Professor Turpin blinked. Lily Evans was a good student. If she was tutoring Nikki and Alex and they were paying attention, they shouldn't have failed so badly.
"I was supposed to help them this week and I've been distracted this week and missed our appointment. If I helped them study properly this time, is there anyway they could take a retest? It isn't their fault."
Professor Turpin considered. Lily was usually more responsible than this. "Alright, Miss Evans. How does after school on Tuesday sound? You'll be here when they take the test and grade the papers for me. That gives you all weekend to help them study." Not to mention Friday and Monday as well.
"Deal. Thank you so much, sir. I'll go tell them the good news."
"Goodnight, Miss Evans."
"Goodnight, Professor." James went back to Gryffindor Tower, checking his watch as he went. It was just after 8 o'clock. He and Lily would be meeting on the Quidditch field in less than half an hour.
James opted not to go back to Gryffindor Tower. He was sorely tempted to go back up to Gryffindor Tower and get Sirius or Remus's broom, but he'd rather not face Lily just yet. He made his way out of the school and onto the grounds to the Quidditch pitch. Oh well. He'd have to settle for a school broomstick. Those things always veered slightly to the left. He sighed and opened the broom shed. Remus's broomstick was standing in front of the others with a note attached in Remus's tidy printing.
Prongs: Thought you could use this in teaching The Rose so she doesn't lose us the match on Saturday. Moony.
James grinned. Good ol' Moony. "The Rose" was one of their nicknames for Lily. Lilies didn't have thorns, but roses did, and Lily Evans certainly had thorns. Her short temper, prickly disposition, screaming…
"What are you doing?" came a voice behind him.
James turned around, startled. He couldn't get used to somebody speaking with his voice. "What?"
"I asked what you're doing. You never came back to the common room," she accused.
"I had to talk to Turpin. After that I didn't see the point in hauling myself all the way back to the Tower when I'd just have to turn around and come right back here by the time I got there."
She noticed the broom he was holding and saw that it didn't have PROPERTY OF HOGWARTS stamped on the side. "What's that?"
James unobtrusively stuffed the note in his pocket. "When Remus and I were talking, I mention that you'd be teaching me to fly tonight and he offered to let me use his broom. He brought it down here when I went to see Turpin." He shrugged. "The school broomsticks always fly slantwise."
Lily sighed. She wasn't exactly eager to get back on a broom again. "Alright. Let's get started then, I guess. Do you want to use your own broom?"
"No," he said regretfully. "You're better off practicing on the one you'll have to play on."
Lily frowned at the broom.
"Look. Why don't you and the broom become friends again for a few minutes, and I'll get in the air." It wasn't really a question.
"Why can't we just start?"
"Because you look like you need a minute to get up the nerve to go back out there, and if I don't get on a broom now I think my heads going to explode, or I'll have to start walking on my hands just to get my feet off the ground." And with that, James straddled the broom and shot into the air like a madman.
Lily called up nervously. "Don't fly so high that anyone can see you! Remember, I'm supposed to be teaching you!"
James didn't answer back. He couldn't. He just grinned at the sensation that was flying. How could Lily not love this? How could anyone want to stay on the ground when they could soar through the air like a bird? He whooped aloud.
Lily blinked up at James. It was almost as if he was possessed. He was flying in circles and screaming, not caring if the whole world saw or heard him.
James shook out his hair as it whipped in the wind, hitting him in the face. He screamed again, almost a war cry, and went into a steep dive.
Lily watched, in a trance. She was almost sure he was going to crash, but she couldn't say anything. Couldn't move.
James pulled up in time and his toes skimmed the grass. He laughed as he went passed Lily and grabbed her by the collar of her robes. She was dragged a few feet a long before he started to pull off from the ground again and let go of her.
James took off through the air again, this time only going about 30 feet in the air and staying more hidden from view. Something about being in the air…He moved with reckless abandon. But at the same time, he felt so in control of everything. He knew how much to lean forward to dive, how to turn and swirl, and the adrenaline rush of plummeting straight down at a breakneck speed.
He slowed from his turns and spirals and went in slower circles, meditating almost. He remembered why he was here. It was Thursday already. Saturday Lily would have to play as him in the Quidditch match. He sighed. It was time to work. He could play later. James came in for his landing next to Lily.
"Ready?"
"What exactly are we going to do?"
"I guess I've got to evaluate the work to be done. I want to you to kick off from the ground. Head towards the left goal on the far side of the field at a forty-five degree angle. Do an about-face ¾ of the way there and go into a dive about halfway to the ground. Come back up and do a circle, give it a 15-foot radius or so. The fly back here and land."
Lily stared at him.
"Need me to go back over something? That's just a sampling so I can see where you're at as far as general flying ability is concerned."
"You lost me."
He rolled his eyes. "At which part?"
"I understood everything as far as mathematics, angles and such, but I just don't see how I can do all that."
James shut his eyes and counted to ten silently. This was going to be a long night. "Look, fly that way." He pointed toward one of the hoops. "Try and make it at about a forty-five degree angle; 45 is pretty non-threatening as far as steepness is concerned. Turn around when you're ¾ of the way there and dive down. You don't have to go too far, just about halfway. Then come up and do a 15-foot wide circle. Then just fly back here and come back to the ground. What part doesn't make sense?"
Lily just shook her head numbly. For some reason this seemed a lot harder than it'd been with Alice, or at team practice.
"No questions? Then just go when you're ready. Oh, and toss me my wand." Lily tossed him his wand, easily caught, and he looked at it like a long lost friend. He picked up a rock and threw it up in the air a couple of times. Then on its way back down the third time he pointed his wand at it and said a spell, adding a flourish with his wrist. A comfortable looking chair, decked out in Gryffindor colors was waiting. He sat down, holding Remus's broom like a scepter in his hand. He stuck his wand behind his ear so that he had a free hand to gesture with. He spread his hand out and looked at her. "Whenever you're ready."
Lily found herself more nervous than before. And irritated. He just had to pick now to show off with that chair trick, didn't he? She kicked off from the ground.
James watched her with a critical eye. The first thing he noticed was her sloppy take off. She'd done the traditional right foot kick off, but her left toe caught the ground as she went up. Personally, James usually liked to mix things up with a two-foot take off that bounced him backwards. It was much more difficult, but the move usually caught the other team unawares, and gave the other two Chasers somebody to pass backwards to, then he could get in under the other flyers from behind and go off towards the goal. He continued to watch her. Her actual flying wasn't bad. Her hand positioning could be better, but her legs were right. Her turn was a little awkward, but not horribly so. Her dive wasn't good at all. It was nowhere near as steep as he'd been hoping for and she only went down half a dozen feet. She was fine again though when she was flying up and did her circle. Then she flew back toward him and came in for her landing. Her landing was the worst of any of it. It took ages for her to get down to the ground and when she was almost there she kind of did a bumping-crash to land.
She brushed off the grass and the dirt, picked up her broomstick, and approached him, head held high so as not to show any sign of defeat. "So?"
"Not terrible. But you need work. Definitely need work. Landings and dives are causing the most trouble. Why?"
"I'm not having anymore trouble with them than anything else," she said stubbornly.
James ran a hand through his hair. "Now is not the time to get your dander up, Lily. Suck up your stupid pride and just listen. Losing the match on Saturday will not help Gryffindor. You don't owe it to me to win. You owe to your House. Gryffindor needs this win and I'm going to make sure they get it if we have to stay here all night. Is that clear?" He paused. "Now, why are you having more trouble with your landing and dives?"
"Well, excuse me if it's just a little bit nerve-wracking to be heading toward the ground and feeling like I'm going to crash."
"You weren't going nearly fast enough to crash," he said, trying to be reassuring. It didn't do any good.
"You mean I'm supposed to be moving faster than that?"
"Typically, yeah. The game moves at a pretty quick pace."
She groaned and tried to sink to the ground, but James wasn't going to have any of that. He got up and pulled her up by the arm before she reached the ground.
"We're going to work on this until you get it right." With that said, they got to work. For 3 hours they ran drill after drill. James nitpicked over every detail, drilling correct form into her brain and muscles. At one point he said, "I can't make this all second-nature to you overnight, but I can try my best."
At the end of three hours, Lily started wishing she was anywhere but there. Her butt hurt, her legs hurt, she was tired, and despite the chill night air she was sweating. She brushed her hair out of her eyes.
They were taking a break from flying. James was back on his chair. He'd offered to conjure one for Lily, but instead she just threw herself on the ground and lay there eagle-spread.
James looked at Lily again. She looked exhausted, but she was nowhere near to where her abilities needed to be for the game on Saturday. He could feel the strain on the muscles he'd been using tonight, but ignored it. He'd mentally trained himself over the last several years to be able to push through physical pain and keep going. His own body was already used to the pain and the work. He glanced at Lily again for the third time in two minutes. Why was she having so much trouble? The light suddenly went on in the attic and James struck on an idea. Lily was in the body that knew how to take this kind of training, but she wasn't mentally prepared for it. His muscles knew what to do, knew how a dive should feel and how to turn…but her brain was working too hard. Fear was fighting what his body's trained reaction should be. She was causing her own defeat. If he could get her to relax enough so that the training that was second-nature to him and his body could kick in…
Lily saw him start to get up, and presumed that he was about to tell her it was time to get back to work again. "No. No, no, no, Potter! I'm not doing this anymore! I'm tired."
"You're right, Lily. You've been working too hard tonight."
"I'm right?" she asked, in disbelief. She'd been so sure he was going to tell her to get off her butt and back in the air.
"Of course you are. You're thinking too much. Those arms, legs, and ab muscles know exactly what to do. Relax and let them take over. Just quit thinking about what you're doing. Now, I want you to dive. Go up there, shut your eyes, and just lean forward so you're heading toward the ground. Don't pull up until your arms say it's time to."
"Are you crazy?" she barked, starting to get up on her elbows.
"No. If you do this and you've done a good enough job, we can be done for tonight."
She looked at him warily, but lowered herself back to the ground and off her elbows so she was in her original position. "What do I have to do?"
James saw that she was clearly nervous and he felt a shred of pity. She was so tired and the thought of her face making sudden contact with the ground at a high speed was nerve-wracking. He went over and picked up his broomstick from where it was lying by her hand.
Lily looked up at him, but didn't move. She still just laid there, arms akimbo.
He straddled the broomstick. "Get on behind me." Lily didn't move, so he reached out a hand to hoist her to her feet and swung her around so that she stood more or less behind him. "Sit down and hold on tight." Lily realized she didn't have much of a choice and complied. "I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier." James kicked off and urged the broom farther and farther from the ground. It was slower with two people on it, but he didn't stop until they'd reached a hundred feet.
"Potter, get me on the ground now," she said, her voice shaking.
"Whatever you say, just promise to keep your eyes open so you get used what it's like to go down at the right speed." When she didn't answer, he rose higher in the air.
"Okay! I'll keep my eyes open!"
"That's all I needed to hear." With a wicked grin, he started to dive.
Lily watched the ground speeding toward her, frozen. She couldn't move. She just clutched James more tightly. When was he going to pull up?
About ten feet from the ground, James finally pulled up and stayed level for a few yards before landing. He turned back to her. "That wasn't so bad, was it?" he asked, cheerfully.
Lily just glared at him.
"You should be getting your second wind anytime now and we can stay out her for another three hours."
"It's nearly midnight."
"Look, you do what I just did and we'll be done. Fair?"
Lily shuddered internally at the thought of doing that again, but nodded firmly. Anything to get out of here.
James returned to his chair and sat to watch. "Don't forget to just relax. The muscles in the body you're in have been doing this for years. They know exactly what do, so just let them take care of everything."
Lily kicked off from the ground so much better than she had at the start of the night. She shot high into the air; well, going higher hadn't been her problem, it was going down that was going to be tricky.
James watched with apprehension. "C'mon," he muttered. "Relax."
Lily was stiff as she started her descent, but after the first ten yards she started to relax a little more and started to look as though she knew what she was doing. She was doing very well during most of the rest. Her landing wasn't pretty, but she didn't shy away so much as she landed. The landing was almost smooth.
James was so proud of her that ran up and hugged her. "Great work! Excellent. You did it! I knew you could!"
Lily hugged him back, but let go awkwardly, realizing that she was hugging James Potter. "Why exactly is it you need to be able to dive and go up higher than the other Chasers?" she asked sternly.
James let go of her, realizing that she'd already let go of him, and shrugged. "It's part of our strategy. We've got some rather unusual ideas. I usually keep center between Remus and Sirius and they play the whole field mostly horizontally, whereas I go under and over them and the other flyers as a kind of surprise attack or secret weapon."
"Oh."
"C'mon. Let's go home. You're exhausted." James picked up Remus's broom and banished the chair. He put an arm around Lily's shoulder and they started to trudge back to Hogwarts. He was almost tempted not to use the limited information he found out from Remus against her, but couldn't help a parting shot as they stood at the bottom of their separate staircases to go to bed. "Goodnight, Lillers," he said sweetly. The common room was empty.
Lily grabbed him as he tried to go up the girls' staircase. "Where did you come up with that name? What did Remus say to you?"
"I know about you two, Lillers."
"How much do you know?"
"Everything."
"Then you know we've been seeing each other since first year?"
James tried to keep his face neutral. Remus had been hiding this for 7 years! It didn't seem possible. Then again, how long had it taken James, Sirius, and Peter to figure out Remus's monthly secret? "Yes. Why didn't either of you tell me?"
"We thought it would be better that way. It didn't seem that important."
"Not that important?"
"No. He's my best friend."
"Best friend?" James asked suspiciously.
"In a lot of ways he understands me better than Alice does."
"Why didn't either of you tell me?" he repeated.
"You really want to know?"
"Of course I want to know," he snapped.
"We didn't tell you because you were very clear in your feelings toward me to say the least. If you knew that Remus was my friend and that we secretly met all the time to talk, you'd just try to use that to get to me. That's why we didn't tell you."
James blinked. Friends? Then Remus and Lily weren't dating? "You're just friends?"
"Of course we're just friends, you moron! Remus isn't my type!"
"Oh. What is your type?" he asked curiously. Sure James was crazy about her, but he'd always seen her ending up with someone bookish like her. Of course he hadn't seen her with Remus because Remus was one of his best friends, but he'd always seen her with someone like Remus.
"Funny, sensitive, c—" She just stopped. "Why am I even telling you this? Did Remus put you up to this? Honestly, what did he say to you?" She took a step forward with a rather menacing look on her face.
"Nothing. He just called me 'Lillers'." James ducked automatically as Lily's arm swung out to punch him in the face. He laughed and ran up the stairs.
Lily stood and glared at him as he ran. She stamped her foot once and turned back to go up the boys' staircase, her tiredness returning. She'd have to wait until morning to kill James.
As she crawled beneath the blankets, she remembered that she was now wandless. James had her wand and his now. She'd have to get it back in the morning.
END OF DAY 4
