The Thrill of the Hunt

Part of the Omniverse Project

Logan and Creed belong to Marvel Comics. The rest belong to Joss Whedon.

He stopped his cycle at the edge of the town, and sniffed the air. Creed was here all right. But so was something else. Something strange. Like death, only...

"Well." Logan muttered. "I can see this won't be boring."

Giles sighed, and set down the newspaper.

"Slayer business?" Buffy asked.

"Possibly." Giles said. "Two people were found mauled this morning. Well, more than mauled. They were gutted, and partially eaten."

Buffy sighed. "Guess I won't be eating lunch after hearing that."

"Be glad I spared you the gory details." Giles said. "There are photographs."

Buffy winced, and forced herself to look. It was bad. Very bad. "What kind of demon does that?"

"Any number of them." the librarian sighed. "I'm afraid that this is a fairly popular manner of killing ones victims."

"What with the number of Demons with claws and teeth I'm not surprised." the Slayer sighed.

Sam and his friends loved the night. The fact that it was the only time they could come out was only part of the reason. The night was when the world really came alive. This was when people had fun. When couples celebrated their couple hood. And when Sam and his friends could feed.

Their preferred food was that of some tough guy or gal. Someone who had a chip on their shoulder, and was happy to share it with the world. They prowled the bad parts of town, looking for a fight. When they found one, they would first enjoy the fear on the food's faces when they realized they were outmatched, and then eat them.

It was wonderful.

Sam grinned when he saw a particularly tasty looking morsel walking towards them. He was huge, at least six ten. And heavily muscled. The man even looked like he could even take on a Vampire.

But Sam didn't travel alone. He looked at his five companions and pointed to the man. "Looks like dinner to me."

While his back was turned, he didn't see that the man suddenly grinned, as if he'd heard him.

The man glowered at them as they approached. "You punks got a problem?" he muttered, acting every inch the unsuspecting tough guy.

"Yeah we got a problem." Sam said, shoving him. "You're traveling through our territory. You gotta pay the toll."

"Pay the toll?" the man burst out laughing. "Boyo you got to work on your originality."

Sam was annoyed. He didn't like being laughed at. Usually the intended victim would have just struck back when shoved. It looked like they were going to have to really get tough in order to provoke the man.

They surrounded him and Sam threw a punch. The man caught his fist and regarded him. "My God you really are an amateur aren't you."

That was the last straw. He vamped out, as did his friends. Suddenly the man's face broke out into a savage sadistic grin, revealing fangs that put the vampires' to shame. "Well if you wanted to play that bad, all ya hadda do was ask!" He swiped at Sam, who's fist he still held captive. Sam barely had time to register that the man had claws, before his stomach was split open like a fish.
