Queen Elsa was worried.
She was in her study going over maps and books. It had been months since the Grand Kingdom Meeting. There had been concerns in her kingdom amongst her people—concern about their magical queen who saw marriage and alliance letters from other kingdoms. However, the only thing new about that was the increase. A more prudent thought was the worry about Vikings on dragons that may come from the north, who also had sent a letter, though it spoke only of trade.
While some people were calm about it, thanks to Anna somehow convincing people the warriors were peaceful, others didn't know what to make of it when Elsa spoke of it the day after the sister returned from Corona.
But that was part of the problem. Since the meeting in Corona, the kingdoms and their citizens discussed magic, and no sides were prominently chosen on containment or conquer. Some letters received seemed to remind the Queen of her younger years.
"What am I going to do?" Elsa said, glancing out a window. She could see the courtyard where Anna was with Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf, prepping the former's sled for a run through Arendelle. "Everyone is expecting a lot."
While powerful with her magic, the ice queen was also worried about the safety of her sister. No one dared tried anything with her, Elsa made sure of that, but that didn't mean she didn't worry. Luckily, the last prince who did so is a bit of a scarecrow, though no one knows why.
These thoughts came and went as Elsa went to work: making sure the generals were prepared, the people were taken care of, and that trade agreements were still intact.
She would have to wait on the last item for a response.
Lunch came soon, and Elsa enjoyed herself with her sister and Olaf. Anna's boyfriend, Kristoff, would have joined, but the man stated how he had been away from home too long. The sisters could understand. After all, family is important.
Since today was full of letters and agreement, the queen decided for a nicer lunch with triple-double-fudge sundaes for dessert.
The queen waited patiently for her sister, knowing the princess wouldn't be long until she came through the doors.
"Elsa!" Anna said, coming through the door. "You won't believe what came for us today!"
"A proposal that manages to sound somewhat inviting?" Elsa playfully snarked. It was not a tone of voice she wanted to make a habit of, but the letters were becoming annoyances.
"Even better! Well, anything would be better than that," Anna replied.
Elsa smirked playfully at that. Her sister always knew how to cheer her up.
"Here! Take a look!" Anna exclaimed as she frantically put the letter too close to Elsa's face.
Elsa grabbed the folded parchment away from her face before reading it in her head. Anna watched with childlike glee.
"Well, what does it say. Are the DunBrochs alright?" Anna asked.
One thing that remained was the friendship between Anna and Merida. The two seemingly hit things off at the Grand Kingdom Meeting and kept in touch with letters. But this was the first one addressed to Queen Elsa.
While Anna could hardly wait for an answer as Elsa opened the letter. The ice queen was motionless as she peered at the message with curiosity and some distress.
She barely touched desert, only prodding it with her spoon, lost in thought. Something that almost scared the princess.
"Elsa...is everything alright?" Anna asked.
The table was silent as Elsa continued to read. Her sister waited patiently in a seat as a maid came by to check on the dishes. It was a long time till the queen put the paper down.
"Well?" Anna asked.
"It's an invitation from the DunBrochs to the Highland—"
"We're invited to the DunBroch kingdom!?" Anna said with child-like excitement. A stark contrast to Elsa's concern. "We have to go! Are we going? I mean, it was one thing to leave for the—"
"Anna!" Elsa said sternly before talking in a soft voice. "I know you're excited, but can we talk about this later? I need to think about this."
"Oh...alright, Elsa. Take your time," Anna replied in understanding.
And Elsa took her time. She thought about the letter all day. She gave minimal attention to her royal duties or even Olaf's antics as the snowman tried the get her attention.
Eventually, he started to wonder what was wrong and began to search the castle, particularly Elsa's study.
It wasn't until dinner did Elsa finally come to Anna to speak of the invitation. The two sat at the table as they waited for the food. The elder sister poured some wine for her and the younger sibling.
"Anna, about the invitation," Elsa started, tugging at her fingers—a nervous habit.
Anna listed closely as she leaned in a bit, already next to her sister.
"I have decided we may want to either send a representative or decline."
Anna's face dropped. "But the DunBroch's invitation—"
"Will have to wait."
"Why?"
"Yeah, why?" Olaf added.
The sisters had momentarily forgotten about the snowman, who had the letter in his twiggy hands. He seemed enthralled with the message rereading it a few times. That or he was reading it slowly.
"We're going to some games!" Olaf declared, holding up the letter in question like a child with his Christmas present. "Why do we have to wait for an answer on games?"
"Exactly! Wait! What!?" Anna declared as she grabbed the paper and studied it. "We are?" She reread the letter. "Oh, we are. Isn't that great?"
"Anna," Elsa said softly.
"I know what you're gonna say. How can we leave Arendelle for some games when we have work to do? But this is the perfect opportunity to make new connections!"
Elsa took a sip of her wine as she listened. That was a good point, but there was more to it, yet Anna kept going.
"Not to mention, this could also allow us to make relationships better with Merida and her family. Not to mention Rapunzel will be there too—"
"As will the Vikings," Elsa added. She took another sip and had a hand in front of her before resuming. "Which means a fight could break out between them and the Highlanders...possibly with you in the center."
"I'm not a child," Anna rebutted. "I know how to take care of myself. You don't need to worry."
"In Arendelle, no, but in a kingdom that hosting an event where two tribes who fought in the past have gathered? Yes."
"We can bring Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf."
"That's a great idea," Olaf added. "I'd definitely be a good mediator."
Elsa paused as she gave the event another thought, glancing at the living snowman. After a few seconds, she resumed.
"Kristoff and Sven are understandable, but I don't think Olaf would be a good choice for now. He might scare the locals."
"So we'd hold off on Olaf's warm hugs...for now.
"Awww," Olaf groaned in sadness.
"It's alright, Olaf," Anna comforted the snowman. "We'll introduce you next time."
That brightened up the little guy's mood. Olaf gave her the biggest smile he had for now.
Still, Elsa, while she may have a point, couldn't dissuade Anna from this. She got up from her seat and walked right up to the ice queen, leaning down.
"Let me ask you this," Anna said as she whispered into her sister's ear.
A few moments passed, and after Anna gave her question, Elsa looked at her sister, mulling over everything but surprised nonetheless. After a while, the queen conceded and finished her glass.
"Sometimes I forget how much you hide your mind," Elsa quipped.
"Thanks...hey!" Anna replied, noting the playful smirk on her sister.
Elsa giggled at her sister's face as she was assaulted with hugs. She knew Anna would make use of her weakness.
"You won't regret this, Elsa. I promise," Anna exclaimed.
Elsa watched as the younger sister ran through the door to pack, only to come back when she realized the games weren't until a few weeks later. The ice queen giggled at her sister as they walked out of the castle together to get some chocolate.
A few weeks was more than enough time to think about the games. And Anna made a good point. Besides, who's to say Elsa wouldn't be over imagining things?
The first chapter of the new book! I know you knew this be a Brave fic, but it will involve Elsa and Anna as well. The second chapter is finished, so it will be posted next week. And hopefully, I can keep that schedule, provided everything is finished properly, but no set schedule. Enjoy and let me know what you think! Have a great day!
