There Is No Try
"Hey, Pete, you think you're gonna be done anytime soon?" queried Alan.
Not bothering to raise his head Pete replied, "Yeah, just a few more minutes."
Neither man had noticed the ape that had come into the building during their conversation. "That is what you said yesterday."
"Oh, hey, Galen," came the reply.
"What are you making?" Galen cocked his head to one side as he peered at his human friend, who at times, was slightly odd and confusing.
With a grin Pete looked up from the piece of wood he was sanding, "You'll see."
"Don't worry, Galen, he won't tell anyone what it is that he is making," said Alan, trying to give the younger chimpanzee some hope. "Come on, we might as well go eat dinner while it's hot. Pete'll just have to eat his cold." With that Alan and Galen left Pete to finish his project, whatever it happened to be.
The next morning dawned bright and clear, the peaceful sound of the waves crashing against the beach below gently awakened the sleeping trio. As the morning sun peaked over the tops of the mountains the lazy little village began to stir, with Pete as one of the first to be out and about.
Trying to be quite, so as not to disturb his companions, Pete pulled on his extra pair of trousers that he had been given and started to slip out the door.
"Where do you think you're going to so early?" A very tousled Virdan asked.
"I've got a few finishing touches to make and then it'll be done."
Eyes bleary from sleep Galen emerged from the next room, greeted the men with an unenthusiastic, "Good morning."
"Good morning to you, Sunshine."
Galen did not bother to dignify Pete's response with an answer.
"Hey, meet me on the beach right after breakfast; I've got to go finish up." Pete was almost giddy he appeared so excited.
After he left Alan and Galen gave each other a confused look. "What is he so excited about on the beach?"
"I don't know, Galen, it must have something to do with what he has been working on. I guess the only way to find out is to meet him on the beach."
A few hours later Galen and Alan stood on the beach waiting for Pete to appear. Finally Pete appeared carrying his special creation and a hunk of wax.
"Oh, no," groaned Alan.
"What is it, Alan?"
"A surf board."
"A what?"
"You'll see. Here comes Pete."
There was Pete, walking down the beach with his newly made surf board tucked under his arm. "Surf's up!" As he drew nearer he started whistling a familiar tune by the Beetles that made Alan laugh.
"You're really going to try to surf, Pete?"
"As a famous green troll once said: 'No, try not! Do or do not, there is no try.'" With that Pete gently laid his board down and coated the top with wax. "You wanna try, Galen?"
"Try what?"
"Surfing."
"Huh?" he wrinkled his brow as Pete stripped his shirt off and ran towards the waters edge.
