"You're cute."
"Oh! And from Tokiwadai too."
"How about you come play with us?"
"I'll give you a ride back home. Well, I don't know when you'll be able to get back home though."
It was sometime in the month of April. April 1st if one were to be precise. Late evening in standard time.
There was a young woman with chestnut hair and with a simple small hair clip. Her eyes are the same as the color of her hair. She was wearing a uniform consisting of white loose/slouch socks and brown loafers with a light brown vest sweater over a white blouse and a grey skirt. Underneath her skirt and dress, there was a pair of grey shorts underneath.
Her name was Mikoto Misaka. And as of now, she was sorely irritated as all hell. But she didn't show it that much. Nor would she ever intend to show it except for a small negative frown that was apparent on her face. She was currently surrounded by no less than a couple of delinquents that were surrounding her from all sides. And she was currently leaning at a steel roll door, with arms crossed.
How did it get to this? Was this a late April Fool's Joke being done to her now?
She was just having a late night stroll throughout Academy City which was simply a part of her daily hobby when no one was looking in order to breathe in the fresh atmosphere, feeling the freedom to spread her wings as it were due to her hectic and somewhat demanding life as a student of Tokiwadai Middle School, the prestigious girls' middle school and one of the five most prestigious schools of Academy City and is said to be the most renowned girls' school in the world.
Admittedly, it was already way past curfew at this hour which is quite troublesome for someone like her due to what that would imply.
And as she was surrounded by the thugs that she never cared that much to begin with due to her status as the #3 Rank Level 5 Esper of Academy City - Railgun in reference to her signature technique, the source of her epithet, and her ability name, she was currently thinking about the concept of the bystander effect in relation to the passing crowd that was simply carrying on their merry way. There were some hesitant and awkward expressions but otherwise, not a single one would dare lift a finger to come and aid her.
She reflects upon it as it happens right before her very eyes. She sighed with a heavy breath as she thought.
"("What a bunch of idiots, trying to talk to me. And I mean...")."
She looks towards the passer-bys who simply just ignore her present general situation and simply carried on to where their own two feet would lead them. She thought, with her left eye opened, casually leaning to the steel roll door.
"("I know those passer-bys aren't actually heartless. Even if they barged in to help, it's not like they'd be able to do anything. They'd just get hurt. Everyone only looks out for themselves. That's normal. If there's anyone willing to stand up for a stranger, they're either just an idiot or...")."
Then suddenly...
"Excuse me..."
Someone decided to speak up.
"Haah?" the delinquents would turn around in annoyance.
"Hm?" Misaka sported a curious expression, as her eyes would be set face to face with what appeared to be a young man with spiky hair, wearing a white shirt, light black pants, an orange t-shirt, and wears white performance sneakers with red stripes as his footwear.
As Misaka was trying to get a good look at him, there was a level of seriousness that was present on his face. His black eyes were directed towards the delinquents who would be rendered immobile, almost intimidated at the look that he was giving them, telling them to back off or else suffer the consequences, and he was not asking, to which these thugs could only relent, making the smart choice, as the spiky-haired boy would head towards her, grabbing her by the arm, much to her surprise.
"H-Hey!" Misaka sported a surprised expression as she sees herself getting dragged by the spiky-haired boy with his right arm, whose hand was holding her left arm, gently but firmly.
"Quiet. You're coming with me," he simply said, sporting a serious expression that would shut down her usual casual remarks in circumstances like this.
And Misaka couldn't help but comply, remaining completely timid as the spiky-haired boy dragged her away from the delinquents. And then they would walk onward towards whatever destination. Already a few appropriate meters away from the delinquents who were muttering to themselves.
"Who the hell was that?"
The spiky-haired boy would sport a gentle expression towards her, a stark contrast to the grim expression that he used against the delinquents.
"Are you alright?" he asked out of concern.
"U-Uhm," Misaka slowly nodded. "I'm alright...But you shouldn't have bothered to interfere back there. I could handle myself just fine."
She was trying to sound brave by saying that. But she was still shaken at what had just transpired not a moment ago. Looking at the person now and the person who was dragging her away from the delinquent crowd, it was almost like there were two sides of the same arcade coin that she would usually flick in the arcade. Either way, it manages to set Misaka at ease.
"I know that you can, believe me," the spiky-haired boy said, sporting an understanding expression as he would focus on the path that he was walking on. "But still, I can't help but intervene, that's all there is to it."
Misaka, sporting a curious expression, would simply ask the following. "Where exactly are you taking me?"
"Where else? Back to your dorm where your dorm manager is probably waiting," Kamijou said, sporting a serious expression.
"Eh? W-W-Wait a minute?!" Misaka said in shock and fear in a comedic tone, trying to struggle from his grip but to no avail, as she was being pulled against her will, not liking the hint that was known by the term "Dorm Manager" due to the fact that only one person springs to mind, and she was quite the formidable and terrifying person.
"Don't worry, the dorm manager won't be mad at you," Kamijou reassured, much to Misaka's confusion. "I would be the one to explain everything so you don't have to worry about a thing."
"I would like to thank you once again for kindly bringing my charge back to her dormitory at this late hour, Kamijou-san."
The Tokiwadai Dorm Supervisor, a tall and slender woman with shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a pair of ordinary glasses, a black formal shirt with a white shirt tucked in, a black formal skirt, light leg stockings that reach near the waist, and black shoes, spoke to the young man face to face out of gratitude and even a smile which would not only surprise Misaka but also terrify her because of the abnormal nature of the situation.
"No thanks are necessary, ma'am," Kamijou spoke seriously. "Just doing my duty as a concerned average citizen of Academy City."
"And so it is," the Supervisor nodded in approval. Then she would turn towards Misaka with an expression of seriousness that would intimidate the latter. "We will talk about this later, young lady, but know that you will not be punished for not being here on time for curfew due to the situation that Kamijou had just described to me in detail. So you are to head to your dormitory room and reflect upon your actions this night. Are we clear?" she said, sporting a serious expression.
"Y-Yes, Dorm Manager," Misaka couldn't help but relent, making an apologetic nod and bow as she would head towards her room where her roommate, Kuroko Shirai, was no doubt waiting for her.
But she couldn't help but glance back as she would see the spiky-haired boy, Kamijou he was called based on what her Dorm Manager had referred to the latter. And she would see the two discussing something that she could not hear due to the fact that they were walking in the opposite direction from the hallway of the dorm.
She could only look back as she mutters.
"...Who are you?"
