Ceremony of Twelve
The Ceremony of Twelve is when the past year's Elevens turn Twelve. In this community, at twelve you are given your Assignment or job. This job is permanent – you cannot loose it but you can't quit or change jobs either. Everything has its pros and cons! Every child is given an Assignment based on the individual's interests and talents. This way, everyone is, usually, happy.
Citizens in the community believe that this ceremony is just an exciting celebration of Elevens turning into Twelves and receiving their Assignments. That is what brings up nervousness and curiousness among the Twelves. The children get very proud of themselves when they receive their Assignments because they feel grown-up and independent. That thought has been drilled into their heads by the committee.
The real reason for the Ceremony of Twelve is to keep everything extremely organized. For example, when the Chief Elder says to every kid, "Thank you for your childhood", the children think that she said those words specifically for them, taking them in a good way. The real meaning behind those words is a message to the new Twelves that now that you've gotten your Assignment, no more fooling around. No mistakes. No childish acts. Say "buh-bye" to your childhood.
