Day 1 - Honesty/Reliability: Into The Future
Jou took a deep breath and got ready to take the first step, but for some reason he just couldn't move.
"Hey, man." Yamato spoke in a friendly tone and smiled at him when he looked over his shoulder. "If there's anyone who can do this is you. You worked so hard for this moment."
"He's right." Sora echoed her boyfriend's thoughts and walked to Jou, placing a hand on his left shoulder. "It's going to be alright. That's what you told me a year and a half ago when we were about to leave to the Digital World. We've seen you prepare for this moment for years and I'm absolutely sure you are ready. You can do this, we trust you."
"And what if I can't and I fail?"
"You're not gonna fail, Jou." Yamato walked to his right side. "It's the opposite, actually. You're gonna shine. You're gonna be the one with the highest grade in your class."
"What if I realize that's not what I truly want to do and that I'm only doing this to impress my parents?"
"Then you are free to quit and take your time to decide what you really want. You're only nineteen, it shouldn't be this hard, you know? You don't need to put this pressure on yourself."
"You wouldn't blame me if you knew my parents. I need to follow the tradition and not break it like Shuu did."
"Jou…" Sora was cut off when Yamato gave a gentle squeeze on her forearm and subtly shook his head. She pressed her lips together for a moment and then smiled at Jou. "You got this. This is your moment, so go nail it like I know you can."
He couldn't help but smile at his friend. "Thank you, Sora. This means a lot to me."
"You're welcome. We'll be here waiting for you when you're finished."
"We will?" Yamato received a nudge on the ribs from his girlfriend. "Yes, yes, we will."
"I really appreciate it, but you don't have to do this for me. Your encouragement is already enough for me."
"Don't be silly, we want to. Now go before it's late and you won't be able to do this exam."
"Alright."
Sora gave him a hug and Yamato shook his hand. Then Jou turned around and found himself taking another deep breath. This time, however, he managed to move and slowly began to walk towards the building.
"Good luck!" The girl cupped her mouth to make her voice echo louder. "You can do this! We believe you, so believe yourself."
"Thank you." He shout back with a grin. "I'll see you two soon."
"We'll be here."
Jou walked inside the building and was mesmerized with the way everything was. The walls were all white and the doors light green. He couldn't help but think it looked like a hospital in a way; the smell was almost the same. He checked his paper to make sure he wouldn't mistake the room he was taking the exam and noticed it was on the second floor. So he tried to find the nearest stair or elevator while he checked his watch to know how much time he had left.
Jou felt a little nervous and intimidated when he walked into his room and found it already full of people. He wondered how many classes would be in the same state and how many people he would have to compete against to get into college. He took a very deep breath as soon as he sat down to do his test.
A few hours later, the cool temperature from inside the building was replaced by warmth from spring outside. Jou couldn't help but feel grateful. Somehow he felt confident about his test and was confident he could be an amazing doctor.
"Hey!" He said with surprise when he stepped into the sidewalk and spotted Sora and Yamato sitting on the floor with their backs against the wall. "Were you two here the whole time?"
"Yeah." Sora lifted her head from Yamato's shoulder and looked at him with a soft smile. "We said we would."
"But I spent about five hours in there."
"Trust me, we know." The blonde stood up and helped his girlfriend right after.
"Don't mind him." She said quickly with her eyes widened in shock. "How was it?"
"It was alright, I guess."
"Do you have a good feeling about it?"
"I do, actually." Jou nodded. "I'm very positive and confident about it."
"That's great. I'm sure everything will turn out the best for you."
"Thank you, Sora."
"So are we ready to go?"
"Yes, yes, we are."
.
Jou couldn't stop shaking and was beyond glad he was sitting down. He had been staring at the computer screen for at least five minutes.
"Come on, Jou." Gomamon encouraged him. "You can do this."
"I really can't. What if I was terrible at it and didn't get in?"
"Then you can try next year. You'll have an advantage because you already know how it's like."
"Just open the damn site, Jou!" Taichi's voice echoed from the computer. "We are curious to know if you passed."
"Taichi!" Sora called him out. "You shouldn't pressure him. That would only make things worse."
"I'm sorry, I'm really anxious to know the result."
"Do you want me to do it?"
"No, I can do it." Jou placed his hand on the mouse and finally opened the site he was supposed to go to find out his grade and what position he was in.
"Any bets on how well he did?"
"Taichi!"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. This waiting is killing me."
"I bet he was the first in his class."
"Mimi!"
"What? I'm encouraging him."
"Okay, here we go." He took a deep breath and clicked on the link with the results. He tapped on his desk nervously and waited for it to load.
There was a palpable silence in his bedroom, as everyone waited for him to say the good news.
"So…?"
"What do you think?"
"He seems too serious. Maybe he didn't pass."
"He's serious most of the time, so it doesn't really mean anything."
"Can we just wait and see what happens?"
"I passed."
"What?"
Jou's bedroom was slowly getting full of noises coming from the video call with the rest of the Chosen Children.
"What place?"
"Tell us more."
"What's your score?"
"Guys, I know we're all excited and anxious, but one at a time, please."
"I think it's pointless to ask that at the moment."
"I say we should celebrate it."
"Uh, I'm not sure about this, guys."
"Oh come on, Jou! You're the first one of us to go to college. We should go out and celebrate."
"They're right, Jou."
"Alright, alright." He gave in. "Let's celebrate."
.
Jou locked his car and headed inside the pizza place Sora and Mimi came up with a small celebration a few days ago. He looked at the bag on his side to see if Gomamon was alright.
"I'm getting hungry, Jou."
"I know, buddy. You'll be able to eat in a few minutes." He assured his partner. "And you'll get to jump out of this bag. It can be uncomfortable, I imagine."
"A little bit."
"Well, just a few more seconds and then you're free."
"There he is!" Mimi exclaimed cheerfully when she spotted Jou walking towards the group.
"Hey, everyone."
"Our soon-to-be doctor."
"I-I guess so." He said with a little embarrassment and rubbed the back of his neck. "This place looks nice. How did you find it?"
"I've been here before with Hideaki for a date and absolutely loved it! And the pizza is amazing as well, wait until you see."
"Have you guys ordered yet?"
"Yes, I'm sorry." Sora joined the conversation. "We thought we could do it, so they wouldn't take too long to get here."
"Looks like you're gonna have to wait less than we thought." Jou looked at Gomamon.
"I can't wait!"
"So when are you going to start?
"Next week. I try not to think about it too much or I'll go crazy." He hid his face on his hands and sighed deeply. "I still need to buy my material, oh God. This is a disaster."
"Calm down, Jou. Things will be alright. You can do this."
"Can't you think about it some other time? We came here to celebrate your accomplishment, you know?"
"You're right, I'm sorry. It's just… the fact that in a few days I'll be going to college freaks me out."
"I can imagine."
"It makes me realize I'm almost an adult and I have no idea what I'm doing."
"We all go through that at some point, it's perfectly normal." Sora placed a soothing hand on his shoulder. "But it gets easier as the days go. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, know that we're here and you can rely on us."
"Thanks. You guys are the best."
"We really are." Mimi bragged and laughed.
After about two hours of eating, laughing and having fun, the group left the pizza place and decided to talk a walk, since the weather was quite nice that night. Eventually some of them bought milk-shakes and they all agreed to go to that park they got together for their third anniversary, when they told the second generation everything they went through in 1999.
"Thanks for tonight." Jou said while he petted Gomamon softly in his lap. "It really means a lot to me."
"You don't have to thank us, Jou." Sora bent forward to look at him. "You deserve everything that's been going on."
"Thank you, Sora."
"Imagine how cool it would be if Jou became the first Digimon doctor?" Mimi said dreamily.
"That'd be amazing!"
"There's no…" He fixed his glasses. "Actually, you know what? I could do it on my spare time sometimes."
"I'm sure you would be amazing at it." Gomamon looked up at him.
"Thanks, buddy."
.
Jou turned to the other side of his bed to try to get some more minutes of sleep, but Gomamon's voice was echoing in his head and his alarm clock started ringing seconds after that.
"Jou, it's time to wake up."
"What time is it?" His tone was still sleepy and he tapped on his bedside table looking for his glasses.
"I'm not sure, but your mother already knocked on your door. So I'm assuming it's time to get up and get ready for college."
"Today is my first day." He sat down. "I should hurry up, I don't want to be late."
"I think you'll be fine. You got enough time."
"I still don't want to risk it." Jou jumped out of his bed and walked to his wardrobe, pulling out a hanger he had put up together last night with his outfit.
"Do you really have to take all of this on your first day?" Gomamon asked as he watched his partner put some thick books and notepads into his bag. "Isn't it too much?"
"I want to be safe." Jou looked at him for a moment, but quickly returned to his task. "Medicine is difficult. I will learn a lot of things, so I want to go as prepared as I can."
"I see. I really wanted to be there with you."
"I know, Gomamon. I'm sorry, I can't take you." He closed his bag and stood up, holding it in his hand. "So how do you look?"
"You're wearing normal clothes."
"Wasn't I supposed to?"
"I guess so, but from what you showed me, they wear uniforms. So I'm confused."
The boy couldn't help but laugh. "They do, but only when they are working at a hospital."
"So does that mean you'll have to eventually?"
"That's right. Depending on which area I'm going to work at."
"Have you decided that yet?"
"I have a few ideas, but maybe I'll change my mind as college goes. I have to go now, I'll be back by evening."
"Alright. Don't forget to pick up your obentou."
"I won't." Jou smiled at him and then headed to the door. "Are you going to be okay alone? I can still drop you at Koushiro's."
"I'll be fine." Gomamon assured him. "I can watch some TV and sleep until you come back."
"Great. If you need anything, you can always text one of the Chosen Children and they will come to help you when they can."
"Got it. Have a good first day."
"Thank you."
.
"Do you want to get a little closer?"
"No, I don't want him to see me."
"Alright." Sora bent down a little, still holding Gomamon in her arms. "You got me worried in your message."
"I'm sorry. I just really wanted to see him walked into college for the first time."
"I think it's cute."
"I hope I didn't mess up with your school day."
"You didn't, don't worry about it."
"Why is he hesitating?"
"I think he's just absorbing what it means to be a med student for the first time for real."
"Do you think he can change his mind and go back?"
"Absolutely not. Do you?"
"No."
"Come on, let's get a little closer."
"But Sora, he will see us."
"He won't, trust me." Sora assured him with a warm smile. "We can hide behind that tree, come on."
"He walked in, Sora!" Gomamon looked at her. "Jou walked in!"
"He did. Are you proud of him?"
"I am." He looked back at where his partner was. "Thanks for doing this to me."
"You're welcome. Let's go."
