"What the hell was that?" Sam asked irritated.
"I have no clue!"
"Let's get back to the camp and see if Daniel found anything. Perhaps he has an explanation for what we've just seen, because for once I don't have one."
Chapter 3
Daniel and Teal'c sat at the campsite and talked eagerly when Carter and O'Neill arrived.
When they sat down Daniel started at once talking enthusiastically.
"The palace appears to be something like a library. The aim of the architects seems too had been the collection of everything about the Mayan and Chinese culture. I was right about the goa'ulds bringing both cultures here and sometime don't return."
"So the goa'ulds have nothing to do with the disappearance of these people?" Sam asked even if it sounded more like a statement.
"That's right! The Chinese people were the first on the planet. They came from the Shang-Dynasty. That means they had come here between 1500 and 1100 b.c. According to the notes the descendents of the Mayan people came from a city named Chichen Itza. This city is settled on the peninsula Yucatan, Mexico, and because of this they probably came here in the sixth century a.d."
"And the people were sooo fond of each other that they just mixed their cultures. Oh Danny come on. You said yourself that it's impossible."
"There was war over many centuries and at sometime a warrior named Mao Li defeated the Mayas first and then the Chinese people. He also built the palace we've found."
"Why should anyone built a palace in the style of his beaten enemies and then also collect everything about their culture and history? That doesn't make sense."
"I have no idea Sam."
"His name sounds chinese, why should he defeat his own people."
"I hope to find out during further study." Daniel went quiet before his face lightened and he turned to his friends "Sam, Jack come with me. I want to show you something."
They followed him into the palace while Jack growled. Teal'c stayed at the camp and took a watch.
As soon as they entered a room with uncountable portraits Jack went quiet. He was interested in two pictures at the opposite wall. One showed a young woman with long hair and a chinese gown and next to it a picture of a young man in mayan clothes. Sam looked at these two with high interest too.
Daniel noticed their interest in these portraits.
"These pictures are fascinating. According to the notes the womans name is Zhang-Li and the mans Sully. But there is nothing more. Neither what happened to them nor why their pictures were suspended here. And we also don't know why a picture of a chinese woman hang next to one of a mayan warrior."
Without taking his look from the picture the colonel answered.
"They're dead."
"Very funny Jack. Of course they're dead. These pictures are some hundred years old. The other pictures in this room are also very fascinating…"
While Dr. Jackson talked he wandered around the room and explained some things about the other images. When he missed a sarcastic response from Jack after quite some time he turned around only to find them still standing in front of the illustrations of this uneven pair.
"What's so fascinating about these two that you can't take your look from them?"
"Do you know anything else about these two?" Sam asked ignoring his question.
"No I've told you everything. These two are a pure mystery."
"Actually not!" Sam responded while following the shapes of the figures on the picture.
"Aha…so if that's not the case you certainly can tell me something about their whereabouts."
"They're dead. I thought I told you that." Jack interfered into their conversation.
"Jack…" Daniel started frustrated and angry answering when Sam interrupted.
"The colonel's right Daniel. They have been burned on a stake together."
"Apparently relationships between mayan and chinese people were prohibited." Jack completed Sams explanations.
"Ah yes and how do you know they had a relationship?" Daniel asked suspicious.
"That's easy their portraits hang next to each other." and when Daniel looked sceptically at him he added after a short break "Besides they went hand in hand to the stake and when they were set on fire they held on holding on to each others hand."
"How do you know?" Daniel asked only more confused than before.
On the way back to the camp and Teal'c they told him of their experience at the lake, of course without mentioning the private part.
"Wow! That's fascinating, but how is it possible?" Daniel remarked when they reached the camp.
"Maybe it is Danny, but how does this help us?"
"Perhaps it has something to do with the lake. We should go there and see if it happens again."
"Okay Daniel, but tomorrow."
"But…"
"Ahh…no 'buts'. The days was long enough and the lake won't swim away from you. I take the first watch, Carter takes the second, then Teal'c and then Daniel."
"Yes sir!"
"So…" while Jack said that Daniel went grumpily to his tent.
"I will retire to get some rest as well. Major Carter, O'Neill." Teal'c bowed lightly and disappeared into his tent.
"Finally alone!" Jack smirked and looked at Sam seductively.
Sam had to smile as well and breathed a kiss on his lips.
Cuddled tightly to each other and talking about god and the world they passed both their watches.
Also the watches of Teal'c and Daniel went without incidents.
So the next day they sat in the camp together drinking coffee and talking about the days mission.
"We have 28 hours left until Hammond expects us to be back so…"
Intentionally he left the sentence unfinished and looked at Daniel.
"We should go to the lake you told us yesterday."
"Okay we break the camp off and then taking a closer look on the big swimming pool."
One hour later they reached their destination.
"So here was it? Hmm…I don't see anything. You Teal'c?"
"I also don't see anything Daniel Jackson."
"What did you do before happened what you described?"
Sam threw a short inconspicuous look at Jack and said: "We took a break and talked."
"What about?"
"About god and the world and these ruins."
"Maybe it was an accident what Carter and I had seen."
"Maybe! But I would like to search all around the lake for artefacts." Daniel looked questioningly at Jack.
"You'll never let me rest in peace, so go…start working."
They decided to take a break after six hours and not finding anything.
"So we have to be back in 21 hours. What do we do next sir?"
"Daniel how far did you get with the ruins?"
"How far? Are you serious? One need years to explore everything and besides…"
"Daniel…"
"Yeah. If I take notes until we have to go back I should be able to get something out of it."
"Okay so we head back to the ruins. Let's go camper."
Sam and Jack built the camp up for the night again while Daniel explored the ruins further. The rest of the day went uneventful and the night too.
The next day the team headed back to earth.
"Welcome back SG-1. Debriefing in one hour." sounded General Hammonds voice through the gateroom.
After the usual examinations they gathered for the debriefing.
Daniel reported of his discoveries and the situation in the planet.
"Okay do you have any idea how this vision at the lake worked?"
"No sir!"
"So Dr. Jackson." Hammond directed his look on Daniel. "When you translated everything and discovered anything important I will authorize a further mission to PQ73X. SG-1 you're on a week downtime. Dismissed."
9 PM, O'Neills house
Jack wanted to get a beer from the fridge when his doorbell rang.
He looked through the spy and saw Sam. A smile spread across his face when he opened the door and let her in with an invitingly gesture.
The door had barely closed behind her when Jack caught her around the waist and pulled her to him. She put her arms around his neck and they shared a passionate kiss.
"I missed you Jack."
"Me too. Do you stay the night?"
She breathed another kiss on his lips.
"What do you think if I would stay forever?"
He smiled and kissed her. This kiss contained all their love and promised an exciting, passionate and tender downtime. And a much more exciting future together.
