Chapter 7 – Back to School (As some of your already know it has become increasingly difficult for me to find the time and motivation to continue writing. My life is more than a little bit in shambles and I just hope that if I continue to write it will somehow motivate me. My aunt is at home and doing well. She may never walk again but other than that she is high spirits. Ok. Enough of that, back to the story!)
Lizzie, Miranda and Gordo dragged themselves into their high school. After the drama of the night before Lizzie had slept a few hours but Miranda and Gordo had both barely got any rest. They had tossed and turned all night and when they did fall asleep the horror of the day awakened them. The group yawned, rubbed their eyes and made their way to their lockers to gather their books for their first class. Kate met Lizzie as she searched her locker for her math book.
"Hey," Kate greeted the girl.
"Hi," Lizzie responded.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" Kate inquired with a purpose.
"Um...sure Kate. What's up?" Lizzie answered intrigued.
"How's Miranda and Gordo?" she asked not mixing words.
"Why do you ask?" Lizzie questioned playing dumb.
"Lizzie, I know what happened ok. I know about their parents." Kate informed her.
"How did you find out?" she wondered confused.
"My mom ran into your mom at the supermarket last night. She told her what happened." Kate filled in the blank.
"Oh," Lizzie muttered. She stared at Kate for a few seconds studying her. The mean spirited cheerleader she had become used to bickering with was gone. She has been replaced with a concerned young woman who looked genuinely worried about Lizzie's best friends' condition. After deciding that her intentions were sincere Lizzie decided to open up to Kate.
"They say they are ok but I know they're not. I've never seen them so upset. They both came to my house at like the same time. First they were falling apart over their parents then they started arguing with each other. We finally got them to calm down but you can just see how bad they are hurting. I barely slept last night and I think Gordo and Miranda slept less than I did. I know I need to be strong for them but this is just so much to take on." Lizzie explained. She shook her head, took a deep breath and continued. "I love both of them but I just don't how I'm going to be strong for them when I barely have my life together. I still can't believe this has all happened. I mean what's the likelihood, you know?" Lizzie admitted.
"Wow that just has to suck for all of you guys. I remember when my mom and dad started having problems and how bad it upset me. It would be hard trying to deal with one of them but you have both of them at the same time. Are they staying at your house?" Kate questioned.
"Yeah, Gordo's mom left. She is at her mother's place, and Miranda's dad is going to go back to Mexico I think. I'm not going to be able to get away from it even if I wanted to." Lizzie informed her.
"Oh, aren't you and Gordo like maybe going to be dating?" Kate reminded Lizzie.
"I don't want to get into that right now. That's about the last thing I'm thinking of in all this mess. I'll let whatever happens between me and Gordo happen in time, after all this drama blows over." She admitted honestly.
"Well hang in there. You guys will be ok I'm sure." Kate assured her.
"Thanks Kate," Lizzie responded still shocked at how nice Kate was being.
Before Kate could speak again the girls were joined by Kate's boyfriend Ethan.
"Hey!" he greeted the girls.
"Hey," they answered stimulatingly.
"How's it going?" Ethan asked in his usually happy go lucky tone.
"Good," Kate replied flatly.
"Ok," Lizzie answered meekly
"Ethan I need to talk to you," Kate told the teen grabbing him by the arm.
"Um...ok," Ethan voiced in confusion as Kate began to drag him away.
As they walked away Ethan let out, "Bye Lizzie."
"Bye," she responded as she watched the couple walk away. With that Lizzie shut her locker and walked towards her first class.
