Title: Only a breath away

Hey! I'm back! I wrote this chapter with my sister's input (Shorty111), so hopefully you guys will like it. My other two stories will be updated in the next two days. Enjoy and tell me what you think.

I sat trying to get all my papers together, preparing for the most important court battle of my life. I knew that while she may have been his biologically, she was mine in every way that counted. Suddenly my thoughts turned back to the day that my world was turned upside down.

"Lori, Sweetie, get up."

"Wha…..what's going on?"

"Your mom got into a car accident, we need to leave right now."

"Where are we going?"

"The hospital, come on, I'll help you to the car." I carried my sleepy 10 year old daughter to the car as fast as I could, then drove quickly to the hospital. I got there and headed up to the third floor, where they told me they were keeping her. I came upon a crying lady sitting in the Lobby...

"Loralai, how is she?"

"I don't know, they haven't told me anything yet."

"Have you seen her?"

"No, they won't let me……I just can't take this"

"Where is she?"

"In surgery."

"What happened?"

"Apparently she was hit by a drunk driver on her way home from Stars Hollow. I asked her not to drive back so late, but you know how stubborn Rory can be."

"Excuse me, are you the family of Loralai Lei…..?" A nurse asked.

"Yes, Yes we are. Now will you please tell me where my daughter is."

"Ma'am, I need you to sit down."

"What's going on?" I asked.

"There were complications during surgery. Loralai…"

"Rory." I interrupted. She looked at me with a confused look on her face. "Her name is Rory."

"Rory had a lot of swelling in her brain. The doctors were able to decrease the swelling, but not before it had had an effect."

"What are you trying to say?" I asked.

"Sir, your wife is in a coma and unless she wakes up in the next 24 hours, it isn't likely that she will ever awaken again." Lorelai broke down sobbing.

"Can we see her?" Lori asked, with tears in her eyes.

"They'll be moving her to a room shortly. You'll be able to see her in about ten minutes."

"What happened to the guy that hit her?" I asked, furiously.

"He was killed instantly." She said and walked away.

I braced myself for a battle as I saw the judge walk in. "Court is now is session. The case of Tristan Dugrey vs. Jess Mariano over custody rights of Loralai Gilmore Dugrey, will begin now."

So, what do you think so far? Let me know if I should continue or not. And as always, please review. Thanks.
