She laughed. The sound of it, she knew, confused the dementors, as did the joyfulfeelings behind it. She grabbed Rodolphus's hand, leading him away from Rabastan and Barty.
"You know what this means?" she asked him, smiling.
He stared at her, disbelieving. "We're in Azkaban. We're here for life."
She stared incredulously at him. "The Dark Lord will free us, Rodolphus. Because he will return! You believed that when we went after the Longbottoms; do you not believe it now?"
"Will he return when we're still alive?" he asked gloomily. "Or will he return after we're dead, buried by the dementors?"
She didn't answer him. Instead, she felt chilly. "Look, Rodolphus," she said, pointing to a cell near them.
The man in the cell raised his face to see his cousin more clearly.
"Sirius?" she breathed, astounded.
He seemed equally surprised. "Bellatrix?"
She turned away from him, back to Rodolphus. "I should have known we'd see Sirius," she told him. "But still, it's somewhat shocking...Azkaban did change his appearance."
Rodolphus nodded. "After he left the house...did you see him at all?"
She shook her head. "I'm two years older than him; he's the same age as Cissy. I graduated the summer he ran away." She gnawed on her lip. "Do you think Azkaban will change my appearance that much?"
Rodolphus shook his head. "Even if it does...I'll still love you."
