Well, this chapter was supposed to be apart of a double upload with the next chapter but I haven't updated it in so long and there have been some issues with this story and the site for a while that I wanted to address. For some reason, the site or even the app sometimes takes the story down off of the Grimm stories list. Sometimes it says it has 0 Favs, Follows, or Reviews. Sometimes it even disappears off of my own story list. I don't know why it has kept doing that but I apologize to anyone else affected by it.
But that is also why I wanted to say thank you to everybody who goes out of their way to keep up with this story! Means a lot. Even though the site is constantly messing with it, you all have kept up with it. It has over 7,000 views currently and we are over 100 reviews for a story that keeps getting taken down or removed sometimes, so I think that's pretty impressive. Reviews that are all fun to read and made writing this enjoyable despite all of the weirdness.
I think I may write this story into a good point to hit complete on it and then make another story to finish it off. Kind of like a part 1 & part 2 kind of thing but I don't know yet. If anybody has any ideas on this problem though, I'll gladly accept them! Thank you to everybody who has ever reviewed, followed, favored, or gone out of their way to keep up with this story, I just had to say that again because that's incredible.
Now enough of me ranting. Here's the new chapter :)
There was no way possible for him to be able to turn the lights back on for obvious reasons but he figured this be the perfect time to take advantage of the fireplace. He let Adalind know he would be searching around the house to find some and she wasn't too fond of the idea.
Given the fact the last time they searched the house, they were chased out of it by a hexed or bewitched blade, whatever the hell you wanted to call it.
She offered that maybe she should do it since she was a hexenbiest but Nick shut that idea down quickly. He just promised her he would be extra careful, not that he needed much convincing to do so.
Besides if he did agree to let her search then he would have to be the one to switch Diana's diaper and something was telling him that wouldn't be a good idea at this current moment. Diana wasn't so enamored with him. That's a way to put it.
He did finally find where Frau Pech kept it though.
Wasn't much left but it was by the backdoor in this medium-sized cabinet. Hopefully, the snowfall and the cold calm down tomorrow because it was probably only a night's worth in there, and they were about to use it.
He bent down to pick some up gingerly, letting out a painful gasp.
His ribs were still killing him. He could manage the shoulder and leg pain with no problem, but the rib pain was beginning to become annoying.
With that being said though, he decided to get down on his right knee so he wouldn't have to bend down so much. He picked the wood out of it and stood back up slowly. He walked to go place it in the fireplace. Just hunched over slightly and dropped it in.
As he turned around, Adalind was right in front of him out of nowhere. "Drink this." She held a glass out to him, placing it inches away from his lip. He eyed it for a moment then looked over to stare down at her. He brought his finger up and lowered it down so it wasn't in front of his face anymore.
"What is it?" He sniffed the air and the smell was pretty disgusting. "And why does it smell like that?"
"Trust me it tastes worst. Drink it." She commanded once again. Putting it up inches from his lips again. He eyed it once more and then stared at her again as he brought his finger up to lower the glass back down again.
He let out a gasp of laughter. "Why are you trying to get me to drink something that smells like that and you said it tastes worst?"
"It's supposed to dull pain for a little while." She gave a look over at his face and body. "And you look like you need it." She said knowingly.
"And why didn't you give this to me earlier." He returned her same tone.
"Because I couldn't just keep letting you bleed out. Drink it." She commanded once again. He sighed. But took the glass from her hand, he looked at uncomfortably for a moment then at her expectant face. He knows that most of these things taste absolutely horrifying so he best do what Rosalee always told him to do. Drink it in the biggest gulps you can so you don't have to tell yourself to keep drinking it for long.
He put it to his mouth and took three big gulps that finish it all and he almost revolted it all right there. That one was one of the worst ones. He put his fist to his mouth to gain his composure, gagging a couple of times but holding it down. "I don't feel any..." He gagged one more time. "I don't feel any different."
"Give it ten seconds." She said as she took the glass back. Walking back to the kitchen to clean it.
At first, Nick thought it was one of those things that kind of gradually happen over time but rest assured, ten seconds later, his body felt a jolt of ease everywhere. His ribs stopped aching and even his head stopped that ringing feeling he had.
The gunshot wounds felt like they disappeared completely and he never realized how harder he was breathing prior to Adalind giving him whatever the hell that was. "Wow." He said as he gave his arms a little roll. He laughed a little at how impressed he was with how quickly it worked.
She really is good at that stuff.
"Feel better?" She called out from the kitchen as he was still standing in the living room in front of the fireplace he was filling up.
"Yeah!" He called out, still shaking random parts of his body that were hurt to see if he could feel any of the previous pain. Which he didn't. "It's not much I can do, since another hexenbiest has done spells here so this place has been tainted by her." She called back out to him as he went to go get more of the firewood and she began cleaning off a couple of plates she manage to find.
Nick was walking back with more firewood. "Wait so if a Hexenbiest has already done a spell or anything of that nature somewhere, another Hexenbiest can't do spells or rituals there?" He dropped the firewood in the fireplace and turned around to face her as she walked out from the kitchen and stood by the doorway of it.
Wiping a plate with a cloth. "It's a little bit more complexed than that but basically yeah." She said as she walked back in to start wiping the other plate. Adalind looked at Diana who she had on the big counter in the middle of the kitchen. She wiggled Diana's foot a little to make her giggle and Adalind laughed a little herself as she began cleaning the other plate.
Nick began to get the last firewood. "Is it like a defense mechanism or something that just is the way it is?" He called out to her as he grabbed the firewood and began walking back for his last trip.
She finished wiping the plate then grabbed the other and placed them both on the dining table that was just outside the kitchen. "Uhh, I guess in a way. Hexenbiest, despite our usual methods, aren't exactly well-liked amongst the Wesen community. Even by other Hexenbiest too." She said as Nick walked in and placed the last firewood down.
He turned to face her again. "Really?"
Adalind began opening the bag with the burgers in it. "Yeah, Hexenbiest manipulate and use people for their own...our own purposes and that's one of the main reasons why we aren't too liked. Who knows how troublesome Hexenbiest can be more than a Hexenbiest herself." She said rhetorically.
She opened one of the wrappings on the burger and placed it on her plate and did the same for his as he began walking in her direction. She bit hers and then placed it back down. "And does it last forever?" He questioned as he got near her and she held out his burger to him, asking if he wanted to take it but he held up his hands to show they were dirty from the smut of the fireplace. She held it up towards his mouth so he could take a bite out of it.
He gave a little grunt to say thanks and walked by her to go toward the kitchen. "I don't really know but maybe. You can break it if you kill the Hexenbiest who's tainted the area though. It could slowly wear off once you die as well maybe." She placed the burger Nick bit on his plate now.
He went to go turn on the faucet but it wouldn't come on. He squinted in confusion for a moment until he remembered. Diana is in here. He let out a sigh and turned around unamused to see her eyes were glowing. "Could you stop?" She still had a cold stare but then her eyes stopped glowing.
He turned back around and started washing his hands now. "I thought Frau Pech was dead?" Nick called out to her and he turned off the faucet now.
"She is but I didn't kill her." Adalind said back to him as she walked back in and Nick took a couple of steps back so she could get to the sink as he dried off his hands with a cloth. "That's why I think it wears off once you die but slowly, because I still can't do much of anything but the pull on my power doesn't feel as strong as it should." She grabbed two glasses and began running water in both of them.
Nick put the cloth down as she finished and handed him the two glasses. He took them both and walked out as she grabbed Diana. "So basically it's like a way of marking your territory?" Nick said as he step to the side to let her walk by first with Diana.
He walked toward the living room and placed the two glasses of water down on the floor in front of the couch since they were going to be eating there to be closest to the warmth of the fire. "Pretty much." She said as she place Diana down on the table and Nick lit the fireplace up with the fireplace lighter that was sitting on the stand by the couch.
He made sure everything was okay before putting it down and walking back toward her. "So Hexenbiest do that too." That was him more of voicing his thoughts out loud. She handed him the Pizza box so he could go place it down. "Too?" She questioned.
He placed the pizza down on the floor as well between the two glasses. "When I first met Monroe. Well when I first met him in person, I caught him peeing on his fence." Nick said as she walked by him to place both their plates with the burgers on them down with the glasses on the floor and he grabbed Diana who was still eyeballing him. Lifting the carriage and carrying it over to the left side that he made sure Adalind would sit. There was a cold draft coming from the other side and he didn't want her or Diana sitting by it, especially Diana.
"Really? Why was he doing that? Wait Monroe is Wesen?" She asked as she sat down and gave Nick a look showing her gratitude for him bringing Diana and sitting her down beside her. Adalind made sure Diana was situated properly and then relaxed her legs even though the heat of the fire felt much better, she was still cold.
Nick came back with a couple of the bedsheets from the spare bedroom and handed her one which she thanked him for as well. "What about Diana?" She asked.
Nick walked over to the side he was going to sit on which had Adalind on his left and they were maybe only three feet apart as the Pizza box was in between them. "She should be fine, the heat is the strongest where she is at, that's why I put her there." He said and Adalind smiled at him as he sat down on the floor with her now and Adalind gave a smiling look to Diana to say in her own way See how much he cares for you?
"And yes Monroe is Wesen. He's a Blutbad and Rosalee is a Fuchsbau." He said as he began putting the cover over his legs and she did the same for hers. They both were sitting somewhat diagonally to each other so they wouldn't have to completely turn their heads to face each other if they were face forward. Adalind had both of her legs stretched out under her cover and he had his left leg straight but his right was bent up. He also was leaning against the sofa while she was more of sitting up straighter against it.
Their feet were almost touching but maybe an inch apart at the most. The pizza box between them was almost touching both of their thighs.
He took a big bite out of his burger, they weren't as enjoyable since it was cold now but they both were starving.
She picked up her plate. "I had a feeling they had to be. Just wasn't sure because, well you know...You being a Grimm in all. She took a pretty sizable bite out of her burger after she finished speaking.
"Well, Monroe jumped through his window and tackled me when he first met me and Rosalee was ready to defend herself by any means necessary when she first saw me." He took another bite. "But that goes for almost every Wesen who sees me so" He gave a little shoulder shrug and took another bite and was finished with it now.
"Mm." She was still chewing. "Can't blame them. I almost ran when I first saw you." She took another bite and was now finished herself.
"I probably would have run after you, if I wasn't thinking I was going insane at the time."
She was finishing up chewing as she shook her head a little. "That would have turned ugly fast. All of the stories I've heard about Grimms and one chasing after me. Especially me being a Hexenbiest?" She shook her head again at the thought of how she would have fought. "But why would you think you were going insane?" She asked and Nick was confused.
"What do you mean?" He asked her. Then it clicked in his mind what she meant. "Oh right. Well, see, you were my first." He said it like that on purpose just to humor himself with her reaction. She gave this little slow head turn with furrowed, confused eyebrows at him.
"First what...?" She said as her left eyebrow relaxed but her right one was still raised.
"First Woge I ever saw" He had a kind expression on his face as he turned to face her and was met with this intrigued smile by her. "The moment I saw your face, is the moment my life changed forever." He never really thought about it that way until recently. Seeing her was the gateway to everything. He realized how intimate that sounded though, way more than how he meant it but for some reason, he didn't mind it coming off sounding like that anyways.
Adalind knew how he meant it but her heart let her ears hear it another way for some reason. She cleared her throat though as her stare lingered for a little too long. "I guess you were my first as well...I've never seen a Grimm before."
"Scared the hell out of me, just so you know." He said as he opened the pizza box and grabbed a slice.
She had an idea to mess with him come to her before she spoke"And as you know, I was scared too." She lifted her hand slightly. Nick was about to bite into the slice of pizza before all of a sudden it pulled away from his mouth and he was highly confused at first as he watched the thing slowly float away from him and head towards the left. started floating towards her
Nick gave her an unamused smile as his eyes followed it float its way over to her and she grabbed it. "And now you steal my food." He said playfully.
She stared at him as she puckered her lips out a little to take a bite out of the slice, she had this very sultry, challenging smirk on her face and she wagged her eyebrows at him once. Nick had to admit, it was kind of sexy.
How did she make biting a slice of pizza sexy?
He was still smiling at her but it turned to a smirk of conceding. "Goin get you back" She lost the smirk and just had an innocent giggle now and she bit it again. He reached down to grab another slice now. "Like I said before..."He picked up the slice. "Not all of us have telekinesis powers." He was about to bite it until all of a sudden it shot out of his hands and went into the fire.
He thought Adalind did it again but then he saw Diana's eyes were purple for a moment before going back to normal. For the first time ever, she laughed too. Well, first time with him involved. Adalind had her mouth a little open, she was a little shocked and also trying not to laugh. She looked from Diana and turn to him who was giving Diana his own unamused stare now.
"By all of us, I guess I meant just me." He looked at the slice just burning in the fire now. "At least the house will smell like burnt pizza now instead of dust." He looked back at Adalind. "Is her teen rebellious stage starting early or something?" He peeked over at Diana now and playfully squinted his eyes at her and she didn't really smile but her cheeks looked like they did a little.
Adalind honestly didn't know the answer to why Diana was so against him but she had a theory. A theory she wouldn't say out loud for now. "I don't know. I do think she is very well aware of many things though." Adalind bit her pizza again.
Nick sighed. "Don't think that is a question anymore at this rate." Adalind didn't respond, she just took another bite to busy her mouth. She doesn't know why she worries that Diana won't ever like Nick. Not like they were dating or anything.
And she also doesn't know why that thought, bothers her as well now. Kind of like why she finds Juliette even more annoying than usual all of a sudden. That could be a way to change the subject though so she went with it. "I have a confession to make." She turned to look at him for a moment and he looked at her as he finally grabbed a slice of pizza.
"What?"
"Renard told me about what Juliette did..." She said somewhat ruefully.
He looked at the fire after she said it. Nodding his head and taking a bite himself now. "Yeah" He just said simply. She felt a tinge of guilt for bringing it up now. "It's funny" She turned to stare at him and he was looking down at his plate, fiddling with a crumb. She could see his jaw clench a little tighter too.
Adalind was a little bit shocked he continued speaking because he sure didn't seem interested in the topic. "At first I was thinking there is no way that could be true." He stopped fiddling with the crumb and turn to meet her gaze.
"Then I really started thinking about it." He looked back down at the pizza in his hand. "She said something before I left." Adalind already knew that though, she may have been in utter distraught at the time but she remembered he looked bothered when he got in the car. Not the 'I'm about to help a woman who I've hated since I met her' kind of bothered either.
"She said that me being a Grimm will always screw up our relationship." As he said it, Adalind felt guilt build up in her more and some sadness creep into her chest. She knows what he was getting at now.
"You think if you didn't come here, you two would be fine right now." She looked down at her pizza now, trying to hide the hurt she felt, not even sure why she was feeling hurt by that as well. Her feelings were annoying the hell out of her lately because they were so confusing.
"Yes" She didn't look up at the sound of his voice because for some reason, seeing him say it, hurt more. For some reason. "Yes, at first I did have that thought but that would be a lie and I have no regrets about coming here." She felt her chest warm back up all of a sudden and she turned to look back at him but he was watching the fire.
It was almost like he was thinking out loud but talking to her. She was glad he didn't notice how she perked up at him saying he didn't blame her or himself for coming there for being the cause of his relationship turmoil.
He kept watching the fire. "A few years ago, my Aunt told me that I would have to let her go because this life isn't fit for her or safe. I decided to not listen and try my best to hide her from it. Which led to a lot of weak or terrible lies. Getting home with a few more extra bruises or injuries that shouldn't be there even for a cop. Things I couldn't explain." He shrugged his shoulders a little at all of it.
He met her gaze once again. "Despite all of that I proposed to her and actually expected her to say yes." Adalind wasn't too surprised to hear that. She didn't know if he proposed or not but when she found out how long they have been together, she figured something must have happened because they seemed like that "perfect couple" kind of relationship and that they would be engaged.
That was until she found out that Juliette didn't know what he was or about the craziness of his world yet, she figured he probably didn't propose because of that. But she had been wrong, he did propose but she said no.
"She knew something was up or wasn't normal." He sighed. "Fast forward to days ago, I was going to propose again." Adalind put her pizza down on the plate and focused even more now than she already was.
"Why didn't you?" She asked.
"Because right before I asked the question, my mother knocked on the door and you three walked in." He didn't sound resentful at all when he said it. Adalind almost did a double take at learning that though. That one did surprise her.
She hadn't noticed her body turned in his direction more either. "On the drive to Monroe and Rosalee's, I kept thinking about how she doesn't hang out with her old friends anymore and things like that. Monroe and Rosalee are her friends too but outside of the little group or whatever you call it, she doesn't even associate with them anymore I'm pretty sure."
He turned and looked at her. "Until you gave that all back to her when you made her forget all about me."
Adalind scoffed a little and sunk her head down. "Wasn't exactly my intention at the time or at all."
"I know." He stated kindly. "But you gave that to her and when she was free of all this." He took a breath and turned back to stare at the fire once again. "She was back to a normal life with normal issues and she looked at peace...happy. After all that though she decided she could accept all of this and I usually think she has." He contorted his face in discomfort. "But I can never shake this feeling like she hasn't."
Adalind had to admit, she had a weird tinge of warmth in her at him opening up to her but man she had trouble remaining unbiased about Juliette. Again she found herself more agitated thinking about their relationship for some reason. But this wasn't about her, this was about him. "Has she ever said anything?"
He shook his head. "She always says she wants to know about my cases or that she's okay with it but theirs always these little moments where she'll sigh or roll her eyes a little, one time she pretended to be asleep when I was telling her about a case and sometimes she just has a look on her face." Adalind wasn't too surprised he caught all of that. He was a detective after all.
But she didn't know it bothered Juliette that much. Adalind didn't really see the big deal though, so Nick's life is a little more dangerous than what she thought it was. She was dating a cop, not exactly a job that isn't dangerous.
Adalind knows theirs a huge difference and that knowing things like this exist in the world can be pretty mind-blowing but was it that disturbing if you are new to it? That explains why it's such a big deal for people who aren't Wesen or have no knowledge of their world should never see it. Then again though, Hank knows about the world, and to her knowledge, it doesn't look like he has the same feelings toward it all as Juliette does.
"Some days I feel like I'm going to wake up to her packing her things and telling me she can't do this anymore & I wouldn't blame her. This life isn't easy for everybody to accept." He said and Nick felt some frustration boil in him. It's extremely difficult being in love with someone but not sure if they love who you are anymore. Because a Grimm wasn't what he was, that's who he was and he loved it. Sure it has its ups and downs, along with the craziness but it's who he was.
It was his purpose he needed that he never even knew he wanted.
But he understands that she shouldn't have to deal with something she isn't and probably never will be fully okay or comfortable with. But he also understands he doesn't have to feel less of himself just because she isn't fully okay with who he is.
Which is why he started realizing if he stayed there and asked her to marry him again she probably would have said yes. That would have been the biggest culmination of a lie they both were allowing themselves to live.
She was iffy and barely committed to his life now and she would marry into it? He was iffy on if he could be sure she saw him as someone she could be with until the end and he wanted to slap a ring on that?
He took a breath and faced Adalind once more. "That's why I think she did what did with Renard." The more he spoke, the more hurt he sounded but Adalind could tell he always had those thoughts, but never uttered them out loud.
"She wants and deserves normal."
Adalind was a little confused about how he came to that conclusion though. "You think that's why she slept with Sean?" His jawline tensed at the words. She even saw his nose flare up.
"I think that she has been asked to deal with a lot and it boiled over the edge this time." He went back to looking at the fire and now Adalind understood what he meant. He thinks that Juliette in some way was getting back at him for making her life "not normal" now. It made sense, whether Juliette realizes that yet or not though, Adalind wasn't sure about that.
Nick also thought about how she was so bothered and hurt by the useless comment. "For so long, I wanted to hold on to her because she was the one normal thing I had that wasn't apart of all the everyday craziness." He looked at her again. "But that isn't my normal anymore and I don't want it to be." Adalind remained quiet but heavily engaged. She kind of liked seeing him open up or vent a little.
He always seemed like the quiet or closed-off type and he most likely was but she felt a sense of pride that he wasn't like that with her. Guarded, but open. "I like being A Grimm. I became a cop to help people. When I found out I was a Grimm, it gave me even more opportunities to help people. Different cases, different Wesen, friends, Monroe, Rosalie..." He paused for a moment to look her in the eyes sweetly. "You."
Adalind wanted to mentally punch herself for almost blushing. What the hell are you blushing at she roared in her head. She could feel her cheeks burning slightly from trying to not let them turn red but anytime he said something nice lately, she took it differently than she should. He looked at his pizza as he picked it up, more of just wanting to fiddle with something.
"It's a little selfish but I wouldn't give that up." He said as he took a bite. Adalind laughed a little at that.
"As someone who has made a lot of selfish choices in her life, what you just said definitely isn't selfish." He was finishing up chewing and Adalind kind of liked how strong his jawline looked when he chewed. She stopped eyeing it though and continued. "Now about the Juliette...thing." There goes that feeling inside of her chest again. "Even if it isn't the usual 'normal', that's what makes it that much better. Because then you only have each other. I think that's great."
"Well, she doesn't see it that way." Nick said solemnly.
Adalind never really had love or ever been loved like that but in her opinion it's beautiful.
Knowing it's just you and somebody you love against everything else. Having a bond that strong. She knows everybody has different wants and viewpoints but in her opinion, that sounded like that special, rare thing everybody tries to find. "Well I do, having that sort of bond would be unbelievable." She said with a saddened smile. It brought her back to a thought she had before he arrived.
That tug she couldn't explain. It's funny, earlier I was looking at Diana and I was thinking about what you said about you growing up without your mom and dad" She placed her plate down and began rubbing the tip of her finger softly on Diana who stirred a little and laughed. She had some slobber come out of the side of her mouth and Nick had to admit, he thought it was pretty cute.
Adalind picked her up out of the carriage to hold her and rock her a little. "And I look at Diana and a feeling comes that I can't really explain." Nick leaned over to gently wiped the slobber off the side of Diana's mouth and Diana for once actually kept the same face she had with Adalind and made it at him too. A kind smile grew on his face and Adalind couldn't help but find the action adorable between the two.
"I just don't know what it is." She looked down at Diana with a smile still beaming on her face. Nick heard what she said and it dawned on him what she meant. Especially because what she was talking about, was something he always wanted himself, and probably one of the reasons he wanted to hold on to Juliette so strongly thinking that was his only chance to maybe have it with the kind of life he lives now.
He looked at her and she was still staring at Diana. "Family."
Her smile faded as realization set in when she looked at him. She let out a tiny breath of laughter. "Yes. Family." They both watched each other as the thoughts began flowing through their minds rapidly now.
AN: Some of the things said in this chapter I remembered from the show! Or Juliette pretending to be asleep, I saw that in a deleted scene.
GrimmFan Hahaha! I had the same imagination for a moment when I wrote that part. Imagining Nick having a stare-off with Diana was hilarious to think about. Always wish the show did something like that. I'm glad you enjoyed the dialogue between them as well in that chapter.
Helga Yes it does disappear for some reason sadly! But no worries if it was to get removed, I'll put the story right back up. It's also kind of cool that the day you left a review on why I haven't uploaded, I ended up uploading haha :) Also glad you thought it was a lot of progress in that chapter!
ReaderNotAWriter85 Thank you and your welcome! Love the positivity you always bring!
Rix1998 It wasn't a rant at all! Even if it was, rants are much welcomed here. Especially when they are that detailed. I agree with your assessment of the Grimm world. Especially since a lot of the stories/fairytales, they are based on involved things such as kisses, intimacy, etc. Or a whole lot of death and blood. Also glad you enjoyed the fluff, a little more of it in this chapter as well but it's about to pick up.
melissamary55 She can be really mischievous haha!
sakura is a bitch Sorry, this wasn't soon at all! But definitely won't be this long for another upload again.
Moon catHahaha! I kind of like that idea! Wish I thought of it in some way, like if he were to pass out it be a hallucination kind of thing almost. Also glad you enjoyed that chapter!
Guest Oh yes, while he may have hated her, I do feel like Nick always was in some way attracted to her whether he admitted it or not. She is gorgeous!
smoak999 Glad you loved it! Sorry, this story took so long to be updated!
Guest Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed that little call back too, I always thought the show maybe could have used their past as one of the reasons Nick is willing to view her differently.
Lucy Conan I've missed your reviews! Was worried something happened! Sorry you had to do all of that reading though haha, the site has been weird to this story for some reason. Glad you've caught up and won't be sharing the house with her for much longer hehe.
Thank you all for the reviews!
