An eighteen-year-old girl ran as fast as she could from the flames of what had been her only home for fifteen years. She had been in a different home, but she could not remember it. So for a long time this place had been her home, now it was burning down. Her guardian looked down at her the scar on his forehead glinting erily in the flickering lights of the flames. "Sere, I want you to stay here. I have to go back and find my brother."
Serena looked up at him fearfully. "But you could get hurt, and what if the military captured him or captures us?"
She stood tall and looked him in the eye. She knew the odds of him making it back to where she was hiding was slim. Very slim.
"I promise, I will always protect you. No matter what." With that he turned and ran back.
Serena went to the cave entrance and sat there. Her leg was temorarily bandaged from when the first bomb had hit. It seemed hours till soon she heard footsteps.
She looked up as a shadow fell over her. "What do we have here? You are not Ishballin! What are you doing here girl?"
Serena shook her head. She had been known not to speak to anyone except her guardians and no way was that going to change.
"Hmph. She is wounded. Mustang!"
"Sir?" said a boy coming up to the taller man.
"I want you to help her. We will take her back to central, she could become a military officer one day."
Serena took the boys outstretched hand. Soon enough because he made a sarcastic (dumb) comment about her, they fought. The other soldiers looked on in wonder at the mere slip of a girl as she fought a military official.
Roy on the other hand was surprised, this girl could fight and fight well! Serena felt a heat race up her leg and hissed through her teeth. Soon though all of the other officials were watching the spat between the two, both came at a draw. Roy had a black eye, and a bleeding nose. Serena was still bleeding from her leg but had a bruise on her cheek, and her lip was bleeding. She glared at him from her position in the arms of one of the taller men she had been slung over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes when she had tried to finish their fight, Roy was as much in the same position.
It seemed to all of the adults around them that these two would either be the worst of enemies or, by some stroke of luck (if they didn't tear down central in a fight) they could become good friends.
Though it seemed as if it might be the second one, more than the first. Years later no one could guess that they would still be fighting.
----
"What was that Mustang!"
"I said 'weak,' is it that hard to hear it?"
"Are we forgetting who kicked your damn ass and busted your nose and lip with one hit?"
"Are you forgetting I bruised your eye?"
"Are you forgetting you almost lost your manhood?"
"She got you there sir."
"Whatever."
"So we got a new alchemist?"
"Yeah, tweleve years old, and you are going to watch him."
"Sure. Whatever Mustang."
