A/N: We are almost to the end! This has been a fun spin to a movie that destroyed me the first time I saw it. Hopefully you've enjoyed this story, too!
Sliding down the jagged, rocky cliff that led from the palace to the jungle floor, Danielle scanned for any glimpse of Vision. The good news was his skin was red so he should be easy to spot. The bad news was his suit was green and blended into the foliage below. As she grew closer to the ground, Danielle could hear the sounds of a struggle through the trees.
She hit the ground running toward the sounds she heard. Clearing a row of trees, Danielle saw the alien kneeling over the top of Steve, holding him by the neck. She pulled her machine gun and released a volley of bullets into the back of the alien. He didn't flinch as the bullets barely pierced the skin of his back. Danielle was about to fire again when she saw Vision stand with the staff the alien had carried, and plunge it into the back of the alien, lifting him off of Steve.
Vision dropped the dead alien to the ground along with his staff. Danielle reached Vision as Steve got to his feet.
"I thought I told you to go." Steve said, looking at the android.
"We don't trade lives, Captain," replied Vision.
Danielle looked at the dead alien then back to them. "You boys alright?"
Steve stretched his neck side to side. "Never better."
Wanda dropped from the sky next to Vision, and Danielle could tell they were communicating telepathically to each other.
Leaves rustled to their right and all four took a defensive position. The figures appeared through the treeline, revealing Sam and James.
Danielle smiled and ran for him.
James recognized the person running at him as Danielle and he lowered his weapon, holding out the other arm to gather her into a hug. Once she reached him, she threw her arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder. James held her against him as he turned his face toward hers and pressed a kiss to the side of her head.
"Are you okay?" She asked, pulling away to check his body for injuries.
James nodded. "I'm fine. What about you?"
"I got the wind knocked out of me, but I'm okay." Danielle pressed a hand to the place over his heart. "I looked for you, but I couldn't find you on the battlefield."
James rubbed his hand along her back. "I'm glad I didn't spot you out there. I half expected you to show up beside me."
"I would've," smiled Danielle, "but I promised to protect Vision."
"Then what are you doing down here?" James said, in a half teasing tone.
"No one told me to look out for a ten foot tall alien. I don't exactly have training for that."
"That's fair." James leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to her lips.
Danielle's brows raised. "What was that for?"
"Something I needed."
Any reply Danielle was going to make died on her tongue as the trees and foliage around them began to tremor. Everyone looked around for the next threat, waiting for something to break through the trees. Steve alerted everyone to close in on his position as the trees shook harder and harder.
James grabbed Danielle's hand and pulled her toward Steve. They stopped short when a large plume of gray and blue smoke appeared at the base of the cliff, and a large purple colored alien stepped through. Danielle took in his menacing appearance from his oversized arms and legs to the gilded glove on his left fist.
"Cap, that's him," announced Bruce through their comms.
Thanos.
Bruce attacked first in his large Hulkbuster Iron suit. With a quick movement of his wrist, Thanos tossed Bruce over his head and morphed the rocks of the cliff face until they engulfed the entire suit.
"Come on," said James, letting go of her hand and running at Thanos with his gun raised. Danielle unstrapped the Wakandan gun from her back and charged behind him.
Steve and T'Challa attacked back to back, but Thanos easily threw them aside. Sam flew in at high speed, firing his guns at the large target, but a flash of purple targeted Sam's wings and forced him to crash to the ground. Rhodey fired everything at the purple giant only to be caught in the purple glow and crushed like a soda can.
All this happened in front of her as she charged, but Danielle never wavered. When a clear shot opened up, she and James fired rapidly. The shots barely bothered the alien as he raised his fist at them and the purple light enveloped them. For a moment Danielle thought she was floating, but she quickly realized she was being thrown like a baseball into a tree.
She couldn't tell if the crack she heard was from the tree or from her ribs, but when she landed on the ground and tried to take a breath, she got her answer. A burning pain radiated up the left side of her body, making it difficult to breathe. Danielle couldn't accomplish more than lying still and trying to catch a breath when she could.
James crawled into her field of vision, also winded from hitting a tree, but if anything was broken it was already healing for him.
"Lucky…you." Danielle struggled to speak.
"I'm not lucky. I'm just tougher than you." He teased, stroking her hair back.
"You have to…help…Vision." Danielle reminded him.
James shook his head. "I'm not leaving you."
The tears leaked from the corners of her eyes as Danielle was overcome with his love for her. She wished she could tell him she had forgiven him a long time ago for leaving, that she was never mad at him, only hurt. The words, and her body, failed her.
Danielle tried to reach for him, but a green glow appeared around them reversing her hand back to her side. She could almost feel the bones in her body fusing back together and correcting their positions. She wondered if this was how James felt when his advanced healing kicked in. The green glow dissipated and Danielle sat up.
She looked down at her hands and ran them along her torso. "What happened?"
"I'm not sure. Are you alright?" James placed his hand at her back to support her.
"Yes." Danielle met his eyes, then drew his face to hers. She kissed him for a long moment, not caring what responsibilities they had to the world.
He pulled away to catch his breath and stared at her. "What was that for?"
"Something I needed." She replied. "I also need to tell you that I forgave you a long time ago for leaving me behind. I was never mad at you. I love you, James."
"I love you, too." James kissed her once more, stealing another moment for themselves.
An anguished cry broke through the jungle, alerting them to the danger they were still in. Both of them hopped to their feet, gathering their weapons in their arms as they closed in on the source of the cry.
Before they broke the tree line, James stopped Danielle and pointed at Thor standing over the kneeling purple alien with an ax sticking out of his chest. Danielle could see them speaking to each other, but she couldn't hear the words.
Thanos seemed to finish speaking and raised his fist once more. This time he pressed his thumb to his middle finger. Danielle heard Thor scream no.
SNAP!
