Chapter 24:

Souper Dooper

Location: Route 8

Today was the day of my third and final trial of Akala Island before I could qualify for the Grand Trial. Hau wanted to do a bit of extra training, so he let me go first.

"Mallow uses Grass Type attacks," Hau said. "So Torracat and Trumbeak should be your main weapons."

"Got it!" I said. "And now that we've got the Firium Z, Torracat will light the forest up!"

"Don't set it ablaze!" Hau shouted. We both laughed.

"Ready?" Mallow appeared. With her was a pink Pokémon with a green-sprouted head. It looked like a ballerina.

Steenee (アママイコ)

#208

Grass Type

Fruit Pokémon

2'04" (0.7 m)

18.1 lbs (8.2 kg)

This Pokémon is always bouncing around energetically. Other Pokémon are attracted by its lively appearance and pleasant aroma.

Bounsweet -Lv 18- Steenee

"Wow! Roto! Did Bounsweet evolve?"

"Yep!" Mallow said. "And it may be key to helping you in this trial Elliott! Okay, let's get ready! To the Lush Jungle!"

Location: Lush Jungle

The dense trees above blocked out the sunlight; only the occasional gimmer hit the ground. Vines dangled from the trees that had what looked like fresh fruit in them.

"Wow," I said. "So, this is your favourite place?"

"Yep!" Mallow said. "The Pokémon love it here to."

"I can see, Roto" said Rotom Dex. It noticed multiple small-white Pokémon with pink mushrooms on their head.

Morelull (ネマッユ)

#178

Grass/Fairy Type

Illuminating Pokémon

0'08" (0.2 m)

3.3 lbs (1.5 kg)

It likes damp dark places. When night falls, the spores filling the caps of its mushrooms glow.

"Don't go near them," Mallow said. "You'll fall asleep."

"Couldn't have detailed that Rotom?" I asked.

"Zzt. Cut me some slack. Roto."

Mallow took us to a large pot with what looked like a stew inside. "Hey," I said. "It's a soup. Yummy." I was about to grab one of the spoons next to a tree stump.

"Ah ah ah," Mallow said. "It's not ready yet. For your trial, you will be gathering the final touches. So, let's start!"

Trial Start!

"To complete this soup, I will need three ingredients. First of all, a Big Mushroom. Like Morelull, they can be found growing in dark, damp places!"

"I told you I wazz useful! Roto!"

"Next, a Mago Berry to give it that extra pinch of sweetness! They can be found growing on trees!"

I looked around. "Subtlety said," I replied.

"Finally, a Big Root. They can be seen at the bottom of trees. When you have collected an ingredient, come back to me! But watch out; there are Pokémon all over this place. Do not catch them or you will be forced to forfeit. Here." Mallow gave me a red bag. "This is a Forage Bag. Store your ingredients in here."

I looked at Rotom Dex. "Let's go make some soup!"

Our first item was the Big Mushroom. "Damp area," I said.

"Think about the Morelull from earlier. Roto," Rotom Dex said. "Mushroomzz and other fungi do like damp areazz. So, let'zz try looking underneath treezz!"

I knelt down to look under a random tree; nothing was there. "Nope," I said. "Wait, I know!" I got out my Ride Pager. "Stoutland, go!" Out came my Ride Stoutland.

"Great idea! Roto! Stoutland'zz nozze can sniff it out!"

I got on Stoutland, who started sniffing around. It picked up on a scent and found some mushrooms on the ground. "Let's have a look," I said. I got down and looked. "Yep, these are big mushrooms alright!" I picked it up when something jumped out. It looked like Morelull but had one large-pink mushroom on its head and two root-like hands.

Shiinotic (マッヘード)

#179

Grass/Fairy Type

Illuminating Pokémon

3'03" (1 m)

25.4 lbs (11.5 kg)

It emits flickering spores that cause drowsiness. When its prey succumbs to sleep, this Pokémon feeds on them by sucking in their energy.

Morelull -Lv 24- Shiinotic

"Torracat, go!" I shouted. My Fire Type was sent out. "Use Fire Fang!" Torracat chomped down on Shiinotic, doing half damage. Shiinotic came back with Mega Drain, taking away a very small amount of Torracat's health. "Use another Fire Fang!" Torracat bit down on Shiinotic once again, knocking it out.

I picked up the Big Mushroom and put it in the Satchel.

"One down, two to go! Roto!"

We headed back to Mallow and gave her the Big Mushroom. "Great job!" she said. "And look, our first guest!"

Lana came into the forest. "I heard there was a Celebi in the jungle so I came to check!"

"A Celebi?! Roto? You're joking!"

"Actually, yes I am joking," Lana said. "I just came for some soup!"

"I forgot to tell you," Mallow said. "We are having three guests today. Lana is the first of three. The third one should arrive when the soup is finished, so get to it! Next up, a Mago Berry!"

I went through the forest with Rotom Dex and found a tree with some pink-curved Berries growing in them.

"That'zz them! Roto!"

I tried jumping up, but I could reach. "This won't do, and I can't climb. Well, if you can't climb em, punch em. Go Hariyama!" Out came my Fighting Type. "Punch the tree!" Hariyama punched the tree, and something fell out. It was pink with a leafy head and two sharp leaf arms.

Fomantis (カリキリ)

#176

Grass Type

Sickle Grass Pokémon

1'00" (0.3 m)

3.3 lbs (1.5 kg)

When the sun rises, Fomantis spreads its four leaves and bathes in the sunlight. The tip of its head has a pleasant aroma.

"Hariyama, Fake Out!" Hariyama clapped in front of Fomantis, making it flinch. Fomantis' hand then went green, and it slashed at Hariyama.

"Roto! It'zz Leaf Blade!"

"Hariyama, Vital Throw!" Hariyama picked up Fomantis and threw it down. "And now Knock Off!" Hariyama then brought its fist down onto Fomantis, knocking it out.

"Sorry," I told Fomantis. I gave it a Revive, and it perked back up. Then I gave it an Oran Berry to heal itself.

"Look!" said Rotom Dex. "Mago Berriezz have fallen onto the ground! Roto!"

I picked one up that wasn't too bruised and put it into the Satchel.

"I got the Mago Berry!" I told Mallow.

"Thanks!" she said. She took it off me and put it into the soup.

"Alola!" It was Kiawe!

"Alola to you to!" I said.

"Oh, Elliott. Taking on Mallow's trial I see. You need to be observant for this trial to."

"Okay," Mallow said. "Last but not least, you need the Big Root. Our final guest should arrive when you put it in."

"How… do you know?" I asked.

"Oh, you'll see," she said, winking.

I found an opening with a few small trees dotted around. They all had some Big Roots underneath.

"Easy peasy Leppa squeezy!" I said.

"Wait!" Rotom Dex shouted. "It could be a trap! Roto!"

I went for a Big Root, when the tree started moving. It wasn't a tree, it was a…

Sudowoodo (ウソッキエ)

#038

Rock Type

Imitation Pokémon

83.8 lbs (38 kg)

3'11" (1.2 m)

The result of it holding the same pose all the time is arms that have become supple yet strong.

Bonsly (B) -Lv up knowing Mimic- Sudowoodo

"Go Hariyama!" I shouted. Sudowoodo started with its arm turning green, then bringing it down onto Hariyama.

"It's Wood Hammer! Roto! It's strong but also does damage to Sudowoodo! Zzt!"

"Vital Throw!" Hariyama threw down Sudowoodo onto the ground. It was a Critical Hit, almost knocking it out. Sudowoodo then used Flail. It waved its arms about and attacked Hariyama. "Finish with Knock Off!" Hariyama brought its fist down onto Sudowoodo, finishing it off.

"Nizze one! Roto!"

I felt another tree; this one wasn't sentient. I picked up the Big Root and put it in the satchel. "Okay, back to Mallow!"

I went back to the gang who were waiting for me. "Here you go," I said. "The other guest hasn't appeared yet, shall we wait?"

"It'll turn up," Mallow said. "Now for the finishing touches!"

Mallow stirred the ingredients thoroughly. The smell was soothing to my nose, I couldn't wait to have it.

"Yummy!" said Lana.

"I can't wait!" said Kiawe.

"I can't eat any of it. Roto."

"Done!" Mallow said, giving us each a bowel.

"Wait," I said. "What about the other guest?"

"Oh," Mallow said. "It's here! Just… look behind you…"

And that's when we saw it. It was massive, pink and green in colour and had two blades for arms.

Lurantis (ラランテス)

#177

Grass Type

Bloom Sickle Pokémon

2'11" (0.9 m)

40.8 lbs (18.5 kg)

It fires beams from its sickle-shaped petals. These beams are powerful enough to cleave through thick metal plates.

Fomantis -Lv 34 (Daytime)- Lurantis

"So, the final guezzt wazz the Totem, Roto. And it lookzz hungry!"

Totem Lurantis made its way over to me and I was ready to take it on.

Elliott Vs. Totem Lurantis

Totem Lurantis surrounded itself in energy that raised its Speed.

"We can do this. Go Slowpoke!" I shouted. Totem Lurantis started with X-Scissor. It sliced at Slowpoke in an X formation, doing Super Effective damage to it. "Use Disable!" Slowpoke's eyes gleamed, preventing Totem Lurantis from using X-Scissor again. But it could still use Razor Leaf. It fired sharp leaves at Slowpoke, knocking it out.

"No! Roto! Elliott'zz already a Pokémon down, and he hazzn't even scratched Totem Lurantizz yet!"

"Go Hariyama!" I shouted. "Fake Out!" Hariyama clapped in front of Totem Lurantis, forcing it to flinch. Then, Totem Lurantis started calling. From the undergrowth came a white Pokémon with a mask around its eyes.

Castform (ポワルン)

#181

Normal Type

Weather Pokémon

1'00" (0.3 m)

1.8 lbs (0.8 kg)

Its form changes on its own, due to its cell's sensitive reactions to temperature and humidity.

Castform has no known evolutions.

"What does that mean?" I asked. "Well, it's a Normal Type so we might as well take it down. Ready your Vital Throw Hariyama!"

Suddenly, Castform made the sun brighter above. "It'zz using Sunny Day! Roto!" Just like it detailed, Castform changed its structure. It was now orange and looked like the sun.

Castform (Sunny Form) (ポワルン)

#181

Fire Type

Weather Pokémon

1'00" (0.3 m)

1.8 lbs (0.8 kg)

This is the form Casform takes on bright days. In an experiment where Castform was placed in front of a heater, it didn't change to this form.

Castform has no known evolutions.

Then, Totem Lurantis' blades started glowing. "Is that Solar Beam?" I shouted.

"Close," Mallow replied. "It's Solar Blade, a Physical variation of Solar Beam!"

Totem Lurantis' blades got longer, and it slashed at Hariyama. It almost went down. It then used Vital Throw on Castform for neutral damage. Totem Lurantis finished off Hariyama with a Razor Leaf.

"This isn't good," I said. "But I can still do this! Go Misdreavus!" Misdreavus was sent out. "Use Hex!" Misdreavus stared at Castform, and it did damage to it. Totem Lurantis then used Solar Blade on Misdreavus, knocking it out.

"This is getting dangerous! Roto!"

"I can still win! Go Trumbeak!" I shouted. Totem Lurantis used another Solar Blade, doing lots to Trumbeak. "Use Pluck!" Trumbeak stabbed Totem Lurantis with its beak for lots of damage. Castform then attacked with Weather Ball, a move that changes Type depending on the weather. Trumbeak was finished.

"No! Roto!"

"Munchlax, go!" I shouted. Totem Lurantis this time used Synthesis, a healing move which is far more effective in sunny weather. "Oh, great. Not what I needed." Castform then used another Weather Ball. "Okay Munchlax, Metronome!" Munchlax waggled its fingers, then used… Earthquake! Munchlax made the ground shake, hitting both Totem Lurantis and Castform which was still a Fire Type. It was out for the count. "Okay, I think we should end this!" The next turn, I recalled Munchlax for Torracat. As this happened, the sun died down. Totem Lurantis started powering up Solar Blade. "Not anymore!" I said. However, Totem Lurantis had a Power Herb, which powers up moves like that quicky. So, it managed to get in another move that hit Torracat.

"It'zz vulnerable now! Roto!"

Totem Lurantis started charging up another Solar Blade. "Okay Torracat, let's do this!" I put my arms out in front whilst Torracat did the same with its tail. "You want heat? We'll give you heat! INFERNO OVERDRIVE!" Torracat was surrounded in Z-energy. Then, it opened its mouth and fired billowing heat at Lurantis. When contact was made, the flame exploded. Totem Lurantis was down!

"He did it! Roto!"

Torracat jumped up onto me. "Nice one Torracat!" I said.

"Well, that was tight," Kiawe said. "But you used my Z-move flawlessly!" Kiawe cried as he said this. "Thank you!"

"You're so dramatic Kiawe," Lana said.

"And now," said Mallow. "A present." She handed me a green Z-Crystal. "This is the Grassium Z. It's yours!"

I got… the Grassium Z!

"This is how you do it," Mallow said. She put her hands together, then put them up and out to resemble a flower blooming.

"Thanks. None of my Pokémon know a Grass Type move, but I will keep this in mind."

"Hey!" Kiawe said. "Now that you've won this, you can take on Kahuna Olivia! What an honour!"

"I'll let Hau catch up first," I said.

The soup was delicious!

Rotom's Move Dex!

Roto! What a Grassaeat day! That izz not a word but Elliott got hizz latezzt Z-Cryzztal, the Grazzium Z! So, let'zz look at a Grazz Type move!
