Episode Three

(Inside the governor's office, a Dalek is stationed in the middle of the room. Around the room, the Doctor, Princess, Polly, Ben, Lesterson, Janley, Bragen, Hensell, Quinn, and some guards are scattered. Some have expressions of awe, others are frightened. The Doctor keeps the Princess behind him, as both stare uneasily at the Dalek.)

DALEK: I am your servant. I am your servant. I am your servant.

(The Dalek finally stops.)

HENSELL: So, Lesterson, they're even capable of speech.

LESTERSON: Yes… But then, why not? After all, they have a certain intelligence.

HENSELL: Yes, I know, but–

LESTERSON: (Quickly) But it is an intelligence that we can control.

DOCTOR: You can't control the Daleks!

HENSELL: Quiet, Examiner. (To Lesterson) So what you want is permission to continue your experiments?

PRINCESS: You can't be serious?!

DOCTOR: Why won't you listen to us?!

LESTERSON: Governor, think what it would mean if we were to set it to work in the mines. It could double our production overnight.

BRAGEN: Consider the effects it could have on our whole economy.

HENSELL: Yes, and the effect of that on Earth.

PRINCESS: The effects would be horrible!

DOCTOR: You must destroy them at once!

LESTERSON: Don't listen to these fools, Governor.

PRINCESS: You're the fool, Lesterson! A fool who is determined to have his own way no matter the cost, you all are!

HENSELL: You go too far, Examiner.

DOCTOR: Yes, things have gone too far, Governor. That is why we must stop the Daleks at once!

PRINCESS: They're dangerous!

LESTERSON: This is simply not true, Governor.

DOCTOR: And how would you know, you only found them yesterday! You have no idea what they're capable of.

LESTERSON: But you do?

DOCTOR & PRINCESS: Yes!

HENSELL: I've heard enough of this. Now, you've made your stance perfectly clear, Examiner–Examiners. But nonetheless, I'm giving Lesterson permission to continue his work on the Daleks.

LESTERSON: Thank you, Governor.

PRINCESS: You'll kill us all!

HENSELL: My decision is final.

DOCTOR: Very well, you leave us no choice. As soon as the communications have been restored, we shall contact Earth.

HENSELL: Now, just a minute–

PRINCESS: We've made our decision, Governor, just as you have made yours.

(The Doctor and Princess turn to leave, only to find the Dalek in their way.)

DOCTOR: (To Dalek) We will stop you. Whatever it is you're planning, it won't leave this planet. Do you hear me?!

DALEK: I am your servant.

PRINCESS: Is that true?

DALEK: Yes.

PRINCESS: Then turn yourself off.

(The Dalek stares at the Princess and Doctor.)

DOCTOR: You heard her. Turn yourself off.

PRINCESS: Or are you disobeying an order?

(The Dalek's eye stalk and plunger drop, as if going limp. The Doctor and Princess then march past the Dalek and out of the room. Ben and Polly linger a moment, still reeling from events, before they hurry after the Doctor and Princess. Out in the corridor, Ben and Polly catch up to the Doctor and Princess, who continue walking.)

BEN: Is that it then, is it over?

DOCTOR: Far from it.

BEN: But you told it to turn itself off, didn't ya?

PRINCESS: It was only pretending.

BEN: But why not then–

PRINCESS: Because they weren't listening to us, Ben.

DOCTOR: We need to come up with something else…

POLLY: What about Quinn?

PRINCESS: What about him?

POLLY: His trial.

PRINCESS: Trial? Oh, yes, the trial.

POLLY: Well, shouldn't we go back and help him?

BEN: We can't help him, Polly, even if we'd wanted to. The Governor's already reached his verdict.

PRINCESS: Ben's right. Mr. 'I've made up my mind,' reached his decision before we even walked in. The stupid fool.

POLLY: But he didn't murder the real Examiner. I'm sure he didn't.

PRINCESS: Oh, I agree completely, Polly.

POLLY: You do?

PRINCESS: Of course. Quinn's a bright man. He'd never be stupid enough to murder a man and then leave a button belonging to him in the hands of a witness. But someone who wanted to frame him might.

POLLY: But why didn't you say any of that to the Governor?

PRINCESS: Do you think he'd have listened?

BEN: I doubt it. The way I see it that lot's too busy arguing amongst themselves to do much about anything, never mind listen to reason. Anyway, first things first, the Daleks are the important thing.

DOCTOR: Ah! Congratulations, Ben!

BEN: What did I do? What did I do?

DOCTOR: You just used your brains, that's what you did. The Daleks are the most important thing!

POLLY: I still think we should do something about Quinn.

PRINCESS: Would it make you feel better if we did something?

POLLY: Yes.

PRINCESS: Then we will. Just as soon as we're done doing this.

BEN: And what are we doing?

DOCTOR: Going back to our room, don't you remember the way? Come on.

(The Doctor and Princess lead the way back to their room, while an unenthusiastic Polly and Ben follow them.)

(A short while later, back in the time travellers' room, the Doctor is breaking open a small device on the floor, using a chair to smash it. Nearby, the Princess is using a penny to unscrew another device from the wall. Meanwhile, Ben and Polly are sat on some chairs, watching the pair as they vandalise the room.)

BEN: I hope you two know what you're doing.

DOCTOR: So do I.

(The Doctor gives the device another smack with the chair and it breaks in two. Having opened it up, the Doctor puts down the chair before bending to retrieve a piece of technology from within the device.)

PRINCESS: Of course, we do.

(At that moment, the Princess undoes the last screw and the device on the wall falls to the floor before she can catch it. Ben shakes his head, while Polly represses a giggle. The Princess picks up the device she's unscrewed from the wall and goes to the Doctor.)

PRINCESS: Here you are.

DOCTOR: Ah, good, good. Excellent.

(The Doctor accepts the device, before opening up the back. Once he has, he starts adjusting the wiring and adding in the part he took from the device he smashed.)

BEN: Look, I thought we were going after the Daleks.

DOCTOR: We are, Ben, we are. Now, if only we could find a… (Looks around the room) Ah, yes. Princess, the bed.

PRINCESS: Got it.

(The Princess climbs on top of the bed and starts jumping up and down on it while giggling excitedly.)

PRINCESS: Come and help, you two! Haven't you ever jumped on a bed before.

BEN: Yeah, when I was five.

POLLY: Princess, what are you and the Doctor up to?

PRINCESS: Well, I'm jumping on this bed. And he's building his doohickey.

BEN: (To Polly) Right little pair delinquents, aren't they?

DOCTOR: (To Princess) That's it. Keep going.

(Something falls from beneath the bed.)

DOCTOR: Stop!

(The Princess stops jumping, climbing off the bed as the Doctor crawls underneath to retrieve what fell from the frame. When he comes back out, he's holding a snapped metal cord.)

DOCTOR: Ah ha! Now we're really getting somewhere!

(The Doctor sits on the floor, attaching the metal cord to his homemade device with the Princess sat next to him. Ben and Polly both get up and join the two, standing over them.)

BEN: Look, Doctor, I don't want to appear dim, but how's this going to do the Daleks in?

DOCTOR: (Still working) They think that Lesterson's the driving force, but we don't. The Daleks are using him.

POLLY: But how?

PRINCESS: They're lying to him, to everyone. And he's too blinded by his ambitions to stop and think about the consequences.

BEN: Well, what are we going to do?

DOCTOR: Problem, isn't it? Smash the Daleks, and the people here will lock us up or kill us. Let the Daleks go, and we'll all be exterminated.

BEN: We could just go back to the Tardis. At least we'd be safe to think there.

PRINCESS: Too far away.

DOCTOR: We need to be here, so that we watch the Daleks movements. (To his device) Oh yes, it's coming on.

POLLY: Doctor, look, if you told us what you were up to, perhaps we could help you.

DOCTOR: Mustn't underestimate any of them. Lesterson's a first-class scientist, first-class.

PRINCESS: He's a fool.

DOCTOR: Blinded by ambition like you said, but we can't underestimate him. He opened the capsule. He realised that the Daleks could be reactivated.

BEN: Yeah, that could be the answer. Let's kidnap Lesterson and hide him away for a bit. (Everyone looks at him dismissively) Well, it would stop him bringing the Daleks back to life, wouldn't it? I thought it was pretty bright.

(The Princess pats Ben on the cheek.)

PRINCESS: Not your best, but thank you for the suggestion. Although, it does give me an idea on how to distract him.

POLLY: Why would you need to distract–?

DOCTOR: There we are!

(The Doctor presents the finished, messily put together device he's made.)

BEN: What is it?

DOCTOR: What is it?! It could be the answer to all our problems. Now, we just need to get it into Lesterson's laboratory. (To Princess) What was that you were saying about a distraction?

(A short while later, as the time travellers make their way through a corridor, they stop, seeing Quinn being escorted, in handcuffs by two guards in the opposite direction.)

QUINN: Ah, Examiner, don't let them fool you about the rebels, they're strong. Try and find out where they hold their meetings.

POLLY: Leave him alone!

PRINCESS: Oh, Quinn!

(The Princess steps out in front and throws her arms around Quinn in a sudden embrace. The guards quickly push the Princess back, as the Doctor catches her.)

GUARD: Keep back!

PRINCESS: I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me.

GUARD: All right, move it Quinn.

(A baffled Quinn starts moving, with the guards once more.)

POLLY: Princess…what was that?

PRINCESS: Well, you asked me to do something to help Quinn, so I did?

BEN: How was giving him a hug helping him?

PRINCESS: Hugs are always helpful, Ben.

POLLY: But he's still going to be locked up.

DOCTOR: We'll do more for him later, Polly.

POLLY: Yes, but–

DOCTOR: This is a case where a little injustice is better than wholesale slaughter. What we want is in Lesterson's laboratory. Come along.

(Polly is disappointed)

PRINCESS: Don't worry, Polly, we'll make it right. If Quinn doesn't do it himself before then.

(The Doctor and Princess continue on down the corridor, while Ben remains with a confused Polly.)

BEN: Come on, Duchess, we'd better get after them.

(Ben gently pulls Polly until she starts to walk on her own, both following the Doctor and Princess towards Lesterson's laboratory.)

(In Lesterson's laboratory, Lesterson is sat in a chair before the Dalek, while Janley is stood beside him writing on a clipboard. Just then, the door to the laboratory opens, and the Doctor pokes his head in.)

DOCTOR: May we come in?

(The Dalek turns around, eyes stalk focusing on the Doctor, while Lesterson stands up sharply.)

LESTERSON: What do you want?

DOCTOR: Oh, just to see how you're getting on.

(The Doctor pulls a reluctant Princess inside the room, with Ben and Polly following.)

PRINCESS: (Muttering) I'm not doing it.

DOCTOR: (Muttering) You have to.

PRINCESS: But he's–

DOCTOR: He's a scientist who deserves our respect.

PRINCESS: But he won't listen!

DOCTOR: Then just keep quiet and be nice.

LESTERSON: Janley, call the guards.

(The Doctor and Princess stop beside the Dalek, stood before Lesterson and Janley.)

DOCTOR: No, please. We're not here to cause trouble, (To Princess) are we?

(The Princess folds her arms and huffs.)

DOCTOR: (Chuckling) Well, I'm not. I'm just interested, that's all.

LESTERSON: You've both done nothing but meddle and interfere ever since you landed on Vulcan.

PRINCESS: We're examiners, we were examining.

LESTERSON: You're nothing more than a nuisance–

DOCTOR: Now, now, I think we can all agree, we've stepped on each other's toes, somewhat. (To Lesterson) But we did give you permission to open up the capsule, now didn't we?

LESTERSON: And ever since you've tried to stop me at ever junction.

PRINCESS: That's only because you wouldn't listen–

(The Doctor stops the Princess by holding up his hand at her.)

DOCTOR: (To Lesterson) Well, we're not trying to stop you now. Please, carry on.

LESTERSON: And you won't try to stop me?

DOCTOR: Stop you? No, of course not. We got off on the wrong foot, Lesterson, but I'm a reasonable man, and I've been thinking, perhaps I was hasty.

LESTERSON: Well, if you really want to call a truce–

DOCTOR: A truce?! My dear fellow, I'd like to be friends.

(The Doctor offers his hand.)

LESTERSON: Yes. Yes, very well, you may stay. (Shakes the Doctor's hand) But what about her?

DOCTOR: Oh, she'll behave herself, (To Princess) won't you?

(The Princess says nothing.)

DOCTOR: Examiner?

PRINCESS: (Muttering) Fine.

DOCTOR: See, we're all getting along swimmingly! Now, what sort of experiments have you done so far.

LESTERSON: Well, we've started by asking it rudimentary scientific principles, and worked up to…

(While the Doctor has Lesterson's attention, the Princess steps back to join Ben and Polly.)

PRINCESS: (Quietly) Why don't you two make yourselves scarce.

BEN: (Quietly) What for?

PRINCESS: Well, things might get a bit…messy here.

POLLY: (Quietly) Messy?

PRINCESS: Well, I'm not sure what the Doctor's device will do, and I'd rather have you two out of harm's way just to be safe. So, of you go. Go and see what there is to see, and all that.

(The Princess ushers Polly and Ben out of the room before closing the door.)

JANLEY: I just have to slip out for a few minutes, Lesterson, all right?

LESTERSON: Ah, yes, yes.

(Janley, picking up something about the length of one's forearm wrapped in a cloth, heads towards the door. The Princess holds open the door for her.)

JANLEY: Thank you.

PRINCESS: You're welcome.

(The Princess then closes the door behind Janley.)

LESTERSON: Very well then, Examiner, shall we test its knowledge of physics?

DOCTOR: Oh, splendid, splendid. Please, please, carry on.

LESTERSON: Thank you. (To Dalek) What is the First Law of Thermodynamics?

(As the Dalek speaks, the Princess makes her way over to the Doctor and Lesterson, before stepping behind the Doctor.)

DALEK: When heat is transformed into any other kind of energy or vice versa, the total quantity of energy remains invariable. That is to say–

(The Princess snatches the Doctor's hat from his head.)

PRINCESS: Got it, ha ha!

DOCTOR: Examiner! (To Lesterson) I'm so sorry about this.

LESTERSON: What is she doing, she's interrupting the experiment.

(The Princess prances around the laboratory, with the Doctor and Lesterson following her, all while waving around the Doctor's top hat.)

PRINCESS: (Singing) I've got your hat! I've got your hat!

LESTERSON: This is a serious scientific research–

DOCTOR: I truly am sorry. Examiner, give me back my hat.

PRINCESS: You'll have to catch me first!

DOCTOR: Oh, let's just leave her. She'll get bored soon enough.

(The Doctor and Lesterson stop, back where they originally started, while the Princess continues to jump around the Dalek, its eye stalk attempting to follow her.)

PRINCESS: Hey, let's see how the Dalek looks in a hat!

LESTERSON: Stop it! Stop this at once!

PRINCESS: It's an important scientific test, Lesterson!

LESTERSON: No, you're just playing stupid games, I won't allow it!

DOCTOR: (Half-heartedly) Examiner, please…

(The Princess puts the Doctor's top hat on the Dalek's dome.)

PRINCESS: How about that? I think it suits it.

LESTERSON: That's enough, get out!

(Lesterson knocks the hat off the Dalek's head.)

PRINCESS: Well, that was rude!

(The Princess goes behind the Dalek to pick up the Doctor's top hat.)

PRINCESS: (To hat) There, there, it's all right.

(The Dalek's eyes stalk has turned around to watch the Princess.)

LESTERSON: I want you out of this laboratory!

(As the Princess and Lesterson argue, and with the Dalek watching them, the Doctor sneaks over to the generator, taking out his homemade device.)

PRINCESS: You can't do that, I'm an examiner! I'm conducting–!

LESTERSON: You're interrupting my experiments!

PRINCESS: (Continuing) Important examining business, and you're in violation–

LESTERSON: All you're doing here is making a fool of yourself–

PRINCESS: (Continuing) Of examiner rule double E 5-11-66!

LESTERSON: (Continuing) In thinly vailed attempt to disrupt my research!

PRINCESS: I'll have you arrested for this!

LESTERSON: I won't allow this! I won't, I won't!

(The Doctor has attached his device to the generator and activates it. The Dalek begins to scream in pain spinning around as its eyestalk and plunger wave about wildly and electricity sparks from all around its body. Lesterson quickly spots what the Doctor has done.)

LESTERSON: You fool! What do you think you're doing?!

DOCTOR: I'm saving your life!

(Lesterson rips the device from the generator, smashing it as he does. He then grabs the Doctor and pushes him over towards the Princess.)

LESTERSON: Get out! Get out!

(Lesterson shoves the Doctor and Princess out of the laboratory and into the corridor where a pair of guards are passing.)

LESTERSON: (To Guards) You two, don't let these pair of saboteurs back into my laboratory for anything!

PRINCESS: You can't do that, we have badges–

LESTERSON: Stay out of my laboratory!

(Lesterson slams the door in the face of the Doctor and Princess. After a moment, the Doctor and Princess look over at the guards, both of which raise a curious and suspicious eyebrow.)

DOCTOR: I guess we'll pop back another time, shan't we, examiner?

(Reluctantly, the Princess allows the Doctor to lead her away and back to their room, for now.)

(Later on, back in their room, the Doctor is sat on the bed, his legs folded. Opposite him is the Princess, her legs also crossed. Between them, the Princess' deck of cards has been laid out face up, with each having half of the cards. It looks like they're playing a game akin to chess. The Princess has her chin in her hand, while the Doctor is playing his recorder. Meanwhile, Ben is at the door, looking out in to the corridor. After a moment, Ben closes the door and comes over to join the two, as the Princess moves one card.)

BEN: She said she was coming back here. She knew the way, and she wouldn't have wandered off. I know she wouldn't!

PRINCESS: Who wouldn't?

BEN: Polly.

PRINCESS: Well, she might have wondered off.

(The Doctor stops playing his recorder and moves one of his cards.)

PRINCESS: Oh, come on!

DOCTOR: If you were a Dalek, what would be your next move?

BEN: We're talking about Polly.

DOCTOR: Oh, no, no, no, no. She's a clever girl, but she couldn't answer this.

PRINCESS: I'd move this one.

(The Princess moves one of her cards.)

BEN: Are either of you aware that Polly is missing!

DOCTOR: Oh, no, no, no.

BEN: Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes!

DOCTOR: No, no, no. She's looking around, like the Princess said. There's a lot to see in the colony.

PRINCESS: She likes to see new things.

DOCTOR: I like that about her.

PRINCESS: Me too. You're go.

(The Doctor goes back to playing his recorder but is then suddenly grabbed by Ben. He also grabs the Princess before pulling the two off the bed.)

PRINCESS: Ben!

BEN: Come on!

DOCTOR: Where are we going?

BEN: To report it. If we make a fool of ourselves, I don't care! We report it!

PRINCESS: Can I at least pick up my cards?

BEN: No, you can't, not till we find Polly!

(Ben shoves both the Doctor and Princess out into the corridor.)

PRINCESS: You're worse than my mother, you know!

BEN: I don't care, now move it!

(The Doctor and Princess start walking with Ben behind them.)

(A short while later, Ben is now leading the way while the Doctor and Princess walk behind him. The Doctor is mumbling to himself, trying to calculate something in his head. The Princess stops however, when she sees a noticeboard on the wall. Ben continues on for a moment, before realising the Princess has stopped, while the Doctor almost walks straight into him.)

DOCTOR: (To Ben) Why have you stopped?

BEN: (Pointing to Princess) 'Cause of her. Honestly, you two are worse than a pair of kids.

(Ben and the Doctor walk back to where the Princess is stood by the noticeboard.)

BEN: Come on, Princess, we're supposed to be going to see Bragen.

PRINCESS: Bragen? I thought we were going to see the governor?

BEN: Does it matter?

DOCTOR: Of course, it matters.

BEN: All right, which do you want to see?

DOCTOR & PRINCESS: The governor.

BEN: All right, fine, we'll go and see him, come on.

PRINCESS: Wait a minute, have you seen this notice here?

BEN: No, I haven't, now come on.

PRINCESS: But it doesn't make any sense.

BEN: We don't have time to go over fliers on the notice board, we've got to find Polly!

DOCTOR: Well, maybe she left something on the noticeboard.

PRINCESS: Not that I can see.

(Ben groans in frustration. The Doctor then suddenly pulls him against the wall. The three stand still, as Lesterson then goes past at the other end of the corridor, without seeing them.)

DOCTOR: Lesterson!

BEN: Eh?

DOCTOR: He just went past. That means we can get into his laboratory again.

PRINCESS: That's right, I bet those guards are gone by now too.

BEN: But we're looking for–

DOCTOR: Oh, come along, Ben. Come along.

(The Doctor and Princess head off in the direction Lesterson came from, with Ben following after yet another frustrated groan.)

(Entering Lesterson's laboratory, the Doctor, Princess and Ben cross the empty room before stopping. From the main generator, there is a cable leading into the open door of the capsule, and the power is on.)

BEN: There's somebody in there.

(The Dalek then comes out of the capsule.)

DALEK: What are you doing here?

DOCTOR: Stand aside. Servants shouldn't question.

DALEK: Entry is restricted.

DOCTOR: Not for us it isn't. Accord every access. We've got badges.

DALEK: That is an order.

DOCTOR: A Dalek order. (To Princess & Ben) Short circuit the generator, you two.

(The Princess and Ben step towards the generator, only for the Dalek to glide in front of them.)

DALEK: Stand back!

PRINCESS: Not a whole lot you can do to stop us without your weapon, is there?

DOCTOR: Sound logic. Unfortunately, these two are armed.

(The Princess and Ben look to see the Doctor backing up to them, as two more Daleks exit from the capsule, both armed with their signature weapon. The two additional Daleks line up alongside the original, weapons aimed at the time travellers.)

BEN: The fool. Lesterson must have reactivated them.

PRINCESS: Yes, well, regardless of how much of fool he is, I think we've got a more pressing issue to deal with right now, don't you?

DOCTOR: Yes. Now, when I say run, run like a rabbit.

PRINCESS: How does one run like a–

DOCTOR: Run!

(The Doctor, Princess and Ben turn and run towards the door. As they do, both the Doctor and Princess' hats fall off.)

PRINCESS: My hat!

(The Doctor and Ben pull the Princess through the door, slamming it shut behind them.)

PRINCESS: But my hat!

BEN: Never mind about your stupid hat!

DOCTOR: We'll come back for it later. But right now, we must warn the governor.

(The Princess, regrettably, runs with the Doctor and Ben down the corridor, leaving their hats behind for now.)

(The Doctor, Princess and Ben burst into the Governor's office, where Hensell, Bragen and Lesterson are already gathered.)

HENSELL: Examiners, what is the meaning of this?!

DOCTOR: Did you give Lesterson permission to revive the other two Daleks?

HENSELL: What's he talking about, Lesterson?

LESTERSON: I have no idea, Governor.

PRINCESS: Are you saying you haven't revived the other two Daleks? Only the one we've already seen?

LESTERSON: Yes, that's correct.

BEN: But we've just seen three of them in your lab.

LESTERSON: You were in my laboratory again. Without my permission. After I told you–

PRINCESS: We don't need your permission, we're examiners.

DOCTOR: But don't you see, Lesterson, if you didn't do it, then the Dalek must have used your power supply and reactivated the others itself.

LESTERSON: I was going to do that anyway.

PRINCESS: Did you tell the Dalek this?

LESTERSON: No, but–

PRINCESS: So, it wasn't following you or anybody else's orders, it acted completely on its own.

DOCTOR: Don't you see how dangerous this is, Lesterson?

LESTERSON: It's a perfectly reasonable deduction on the part of the Dalek.

BEN: Are you off your head, mate? Those two are armed!

LESTERSON: Then we turn off the electricity, disarm them, and then everything is safe again.

PRINCESS: Safe! We're the furthest thing from safe while those Daleks are–

HENSELL: Stop these arguments, all of you, I've had enough! I've every confidence in Lesterson. He has carte blanche for the Daleks from now on.

DOCTOR: But they must be destroyed!

(Hensell ignores the time travellers.)

HENSELL: Bragen, I'm making a tour of the perimeter. I put you in direct charge here. See that Lesterson gets everything he wants, will you?

(Bragen smiles and nods, as Hensell then leaves the room.)

LESTERSON: I shall need a permanent guard on my laboratory, Bragen.

PRINCESS: If you think a guard will protect you–

LESTERSON: Is that a threat?

PRINCESS: No, it's a warning. Those Daleks will kill you, Lesterson, I've seen it!

DOCTOR: That's enough. Come on.

(The Doctor begins pulling the Princess out of the room with some assistance from Ben.)

PRINCESS: Lesterson, please, stop this before it's too late. You can save dozens of lives if you just stop the Daleks now!

(Out in the corridor, the Doctor and Ben pull a growingly hysteric Princess away from the Governor's office. Once around the corner, the Doctor holds the Princess against the wall as she begins panicking.)

DOCTOR: Princess, was that true? Did you really see Lesterson die at the hands of the Daleks?

PRINCESS: (Panicked) Not just him. So many of them… There were so many of them!

BEN: What's happening to her, Doctor?

DOCTOR: She's had some sort premonition.

PRINCESS: Doctor, we have to stop them. We have to stop them!

DOCTOR: And we will, we will. But you must calm down. Take a deep breath. (He takes a deep breath) Just like me. Follow me, now. In. (Deep breath) And out. (Exhale) In. And out.

(The Princess begins copying the Doctor, taking deep, calming breathes.)

DOCTOR: There we are, how's that?

PRINCESS: Better, thank you.

DOCTOR: Now, did you see anything that could help us in your premonition?

PRINCESS: Just…death. And Daleks. Daleks everywhere.

BEN: But there were only three in the capsule.

DOCTOR: Yes. But perhaps they could call for reinforcements, now that the communications have been fixed. Come on, let's get back to the room and rest for a moment.

(The Doctor leads the shaken Princess down the corridor with Ben following them.)

(Returning to their room, the Doctor and Princess walk in with Ben behind them. The Princess, spotting her cards on the bed, starts picking them up. The Doctor hovers around her for a moment, before seeing she's all right. He then sits himself down and pulls out his record. He starts to play a soft gentle relaxing tune, as Bragen then walks in.)

BEN: Oh, I want to see you.

BRAGEN: What about?

BEN: Well, it's Polly, she's missing. We can't find her anywhere.

BRAGEN: I'll tell one of my men to make enquiries. It shouldn't take long to find her.

BEN: Ah, thanks.

BRAGEN: Examiners, some of my men have found a body in the mercury swamp. It was the body of a middle-aged man.

(The Princess has finished picking up her cards and is making the deck neat and tidy.)

PRINCESS: Thank you for letting us know. But why are you telling us?

BRAGEN: You're the Examiners… Or maybe you're not.

(The Doctor stops playing his recorder. The time travellers all go still. The Doctor then stands up.)

DOCTOR: Just exactly what do you mean by that?

BRAGEN: Who are you? Quinn's friends come to stir up rebellion?

(The Princess slowly turns around.)

PRINCESS: You've over played your hand, Bragen.

DOCTOR: There's only one possible way that you could know we're not the Examiner.

BEN: Yeah, by knowing what the real Examiner looked like.

DOCTOR: Exactly, Ben. Exactly. Only three people knew of his arrival on this planet. Myself, the Princess, and his murderer.

BRAGEN: What utter nonsense.

DOCTOR: Not from where I'm standing. You've slipped up one too many times.

BRAGEN: What are you–?

PRINCESS: You've been planning this for a long time, haven't you, Bragen? You were always planning on getting rid of Quinn. The way you arrested him confirmed as much.

DOCTOR: The timing of everything was a bit too perfect. You destroyed the communications yourself. Maybe you always planned to do it that way. Or maybe it was to stop us from contacting Earth, who'd know at once we weren't their examiner. But then we'd be able to tell them too much.

PRINCESS: And then there was the way you leapt on the evidence we brought up, the button. You hardly looked at it and yet you knew it was Quinn's.

DOCTOR: You planned on leaving it next to the body of the examiner as evidence, to draw it back to Quinn. But then we came along, so you changed tac. You left the button as evidence in my hand instead, hoping we'd help you with your dirty work.

PRINCESS: But then came your second slip up, when you declared the Doctor found the button in his hand, when we never told you that. The only way you could have known that, was if you placed it there yourself.

BRAGEN: That's enough!

BEN: Is it? (To Doctor & Princess) We've got to tell the Governor.

BRAGEN: Do you think he'll believe you? I'll soon convince him that you murdered the man yourself. You stole the Examiner's badges.

DOCTOR: Then why don't you arrest us? Because there's a doubt isn't there? Because it might, it just might, go against you.

BRAGEN: All right. All right, so neither of us wants to make a move. But you leave Lesterson alone. And the Daleks.

PRINCESS: Why? How do they benefit you?

DOCTOR: You won't be able to control them, you know. Whatever you're thinking of using them for, they will turn against you.

(Bragen says nothing, before then turning and leaving the room, closing the door behind him.)

BEN: He'd make a right Father Christmas, wouldn't he?

PRINCESS: Hardly. He'd be awful as Santa Claus.

BEN: I know, I meant… Oh, forget it.

DOCTOR: I'd still rather fight a hundred of his sort, than just one Dalek.

BEN: Well, what do we do now?

PRINCESS: We can't trust him to find Polly.

DOCTOR: No. He might even be involved in her disappearance. But this is all just getting in the way. The real threat here is the Daleks! Can't Bragen see–

PRINCESS: (Pointing) What's that?

(The Doctor and Ben look to see an envelope has been pushed under the door. Ben runs to the door and quickly opens it, but there's no one outside. Ben then picks up the envelope and opens it, as the Doctor and Princess gather around.)

BEN: Listen to this. (Reading) The girl is safe. She will remain so as long as you leave the Daleks alone.

PRINCESS: So, that's how they want to play it. Well, they've just gone too far. (Snatches the letter form Ben) I'm not going to just stand here while these lowlifes threaten my friend. Come on.

BEN: Where are we going?

PRINCESS: To the man who sent this note. Let's see what he has to say for himself.

(The Princess strides off down the corridor, with an ominous golden glow trailing her as she marches…)
