NARROW ESCAPES: A Drabble of the Triple Variety

There were deep scratches across one tawny cheek, a brace down the side of his neck, and a third set straight down the center of his chest. The back of one bedraggled hand was criss-crossed with more of the jagged wounds, while wrist and forearm were similarly shredded.

He looked a right fright.

"Oh, you poor dear, whatever has happened?"

The sweet-faced trollop sat next to Jack, one hand sliding a mug in front of him while the other caressed the unusually somber face, which stared forlornly at her from under the battered tricorn.

"An unlikely run in with a great ferocious beast of the feline persuasion, lass." The beleaguered captain took a long draught and gave the girl a small, sad smile.

"A jungle beast?" she whispered, drawing back in awe.

Now, that was more of a leap than he could have hoped for! An active imagination in a whore was always the herald of a memorable evening.

"On me Aunt Fanny's grave," he said solemnly, hand to heart, and, had he had an Aunt Fanny, she would have been touched by the gesture. "It was thatclose, darling', that close to being the end of Captain Jack Sparrow."

His voice trailed off into the bottom of the mug as he took another pull at the rum, noticing with interest the flush that had rushed to color her fair cheeks.

"Lion?" She barely breathed the question, her gaze never leaving his torn face.

"Not lyin', luv. Honestly!

She bestowed a gentle kiss to his injured hand before turning to lead him toward the back stairway. The merest flicker of wicked delight danced across his lips and into his eyes, before nipping back behind his mournful façade.

Blasted devil of a ship's cat had proved itself useful at last.
