Chapter IV: Memories

June was exhausted as she plopped down in Ratchet's hand. Grease stained her sweater and hands. And, Ratchet noted there was smudge of grease on her cheek as well and her usually immaculate hair was out of place as it framed her face. And yet, Ratchet thought as she brushed her greasy fingers through her hair, a tired yawn escaping her lips, to him she never looked more beautiful. As that thought entered his equally exhausted mind he blinked, where had that come from?

Giving his head a shake he watched as June looked up at him, a questioning look shining in her eyes. "Are you okay?" she asked, stifling another yawn.

"It's nothing." Ratchet told her, offering her a little smile. "I'm just a little tired."

"Ah," June said. "To be honest so am I. Think I'm going to call it a night." Glancing at her watch, her eyes widening when she saw what time it was.

Ten Thirty. June bit down on her bottom lip, obviously she had spent far longer than she intended to, was Jack still waiting for her?

"Wow," she murmured, glancing up at the medic, as he raised an eyebrow ridge. "I hadn't realized how late it was. I should get Jack and go home." She told him.

Nodding Ratchet carried her back to the control room, as Jack descended down the stairs, looking up as he heard Ratchet entered the room.

"Well," Jack said, placing his hands on his hips as he smiled up at her. "Look who's finally back. Did you have a good time helping Ratchet with his mystery project?" he asked, looking up at Ratchet as he placed June back on the ground.

'I don't know if I'd call it fun." June said, as she wiped her hands off on her pants before looking to her hands in disgust. "But it was a nice way to kill time while you and your friends did...whatever it was that you do when you're not helping the Autobots fight the Decepticons." she said.

"Homework." Jack said, grabbing his helmet from Raf, as the younger boy passed Jack on his way to where Bumblebee was, as the yellow scout transformed and opened his door for him. Miko close behind following suit with Bulkhead.

"Things were pretty quiet and all the chores were done so we did homework." Jack continued.

"Really?" June asked, her eyes looked to Mio, as the young girl grumbled something under her breath.

"Well, Raf and I did homework. Miko tried to do homework but, uh, she gave up." Jack said, scratching at the back of his head.

Chuckling June shook her head, as she headed for her car, but not before casting one final glance at Ratchet as he watched her, offering him a tired smile as he offered one of his own, before both Darby's drove off.

Turning away Ratchet sighed as he began to clean up for the day, thoughts of June Darby still floating around in his processor as he did so. Now, Ratchet couldn't figure out why but for some odd reason he wanted to spend more of his time with June, and more to the point he wanted to know what she was hiding. And she was hiding something he knew she was. Maybe with time and a little patience, he thought, she would open up to him.

As he placed the last of his tools away he looked over his shoulder once more, at where she once stood. But as he thought this Ratchet could help but feel like something was very wrong...

June was beyond tired when she and Jack finally got home, stifling another yawn she locked her car and wished Arcee a good night before heading to the front door. Leaving Jack alone as he spoke with Arcee about something. Only to stop at the edge of the steps she continued to watch the two before the garage door slid closed. But before it did she managed to catch a glimpse of the playful smile on Arcee's plates. As Jack let out an embarrassed groan, cheeks a light pink.

Obviously, Arcee knew about her sons little crush, and was teasing him about it. Giving her head a shake she moved to climb the stairs when she stopped in her tracks. Her eyes settling on what lay on her doorstep. A bouquet lay on her doormat, of roses of the deepest red she had ever laid her eyes on. So dark they were practically black. And attached to the bouquet was an envelope.

Despite telling herself that whoever had left the roses had made a mistake, she knew that was simply not true. After all, there was only one person, aside from Jack that knew she loved roses. Him. She remembered telling him so many years ago. Long before it all went to hell that she loved roses, especially ones like these. She remembered him laughing and telling her that he never thought she would be the type to like roses that color. That they reminded him of blood. Has said that he thought she was more of a lily type as he pulled her close. She remembered the look in those warm green eyes as he did so.

Remembered walking with him down the street. Remembered a few days after receiving a bouquet of roses of the very same color at her door step, with a cute handwritten note attached to it. A note that read, You'll always be mine, forever and always. I love you June Bug. At the time June had been new to the relationship, and was beyond happy, had thought she had met the one.

Boy...was she wrong. Shoving those dark thoughts from her head. June scolded herself for being irrational. Obviously someone had gotten the address wrong, and had delivered to her house by mistake. Forcing herself to believe that she picked them up, intent on finding out who they belonged to. Her eyes going wide as she read the note. It read, To my sweet little June Bug. I'm closer than I might seem, and I'm always watching. Her blood ran cold, dropping the letter and bouquet she whirled around, nearly slamming into Jack as she did so.

"Oh! I'm sorry sweetie." She said, placing her hands on his shoulders. Her eyes scanning the darkened neighborhood, looking for any sign of the man she knew was watching her.

Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she looked to Jack.

"Are you okay?" Jack asked.

Forcing a smile to her lips she quickly nodded. Her smile quickly disappearing as Jack moved past her, and picked up the envelope. June felt her blood running cold once more as she watched him read it, before looking to her with a questioning look in his eyes.

"What's this about?" he asked.

"That's...that's nothing." And here she was still lying to her son. "Wrong address...I think."

Jack looked to her as she reached for the letter, as she picked up the flowers once more.

"Tomorrow morning I'll figure out where they belong and return them." She said.

"They have your name on them." Jack said, eyes never leaving her.

"Not mine." She said, frown. "I'm not June Bug. Never have been." As she said this she moved to unlock the door, when Jack stepped out in front of her, eyes narrowed.

"Something is going on." He said.

"What's going on, Jack is that I have to work in the morning, and I'm tired." June said, reaching into he pocket for her keys as Jack sighed.

"I thought we never hid anything from each other." Jack said, irritation tinting his voice.

"I'm not hiding anything from you." June insisted, as she unlocked the door.

Jack scowling as he followed her in, all but slamming the door shut behind him as he followed her further into the house. "Now that is complete and utter bullshit."

"Excuse me?!" June said, turning around to glare at Jack, eyes wide in surprise.

"You heard me," Jack said moving closer until they were inches apart, Jack glaring at her. "Something is going on with you, and it has nothing to do with some co-worker. So, I'm going to ask again what. Is. Going. On?"

June was silent as she looked up at her son, anger shining in those blue eyes, much like his. Much the same way he would glare at her whenever she did something he didn't like. Her thoughts once again going back to a time when she was younger. Remembering being invited to a business party by him. Remembering buying a dark grey dress which he told her looked absolutely stunning on her. It wasn't until they had went to the party and June had decided to mingle with some co-workers at the law firm he worked at. Remembering laughing a little too hard at something one of his co-workers had said, had thanked him when the very same man commented on her dress. Her fingers brushing against his sleeve. She had thought nothing of it until they had returned home.

Remembering the bruising grip he had on her arm, remembering the anger that shone in his eyes behind his glasses he always wore. Remembered the confusion she felt when he accused her of flirting with said co-worker. An accusation she denied, laughed at him for saying such a silly thing. That was all he needed, as he drove his fist into her stomach. Making her drop to the ground, knocking the wind out of her lungs as he did so.

Blue eyes wide as she looked up at him. Unable to believe ha had just done that when he brought his hand down hard across her face, splitting her lip as he spat curse and insult at her as he continued to beat her within an inch of her life, until she lay prone on the living room floor. The man she had thought she had loved nowhere to be seen. And at that moment, as she picked herself up off the ground, she wondered where the man she loved, who she thought loved her had gone?

"Mom?" Jack's harsh tone broke through her thoughts, his hands gripping her shoulders, giving her a little shake.

"H-huh?" June murmured.

"I want you to tell me what's going on...please." He said.

June continued to stare at her son. Gone was that fiery look in his eyes. Guilt gripped June's heart. Tell him. A voice whispered in the back of her exhausted mind. Would you really put it past him to try something with Jack to get back at you? She whimpered. She wouldn't put it past her ex-husband to try something. To try and hurt the son she loved more than life to get to her. Letting out a defeated sighed she placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Can we...can we talk about this tomorrow?" She pleaded.

Jack was silent before heaving a sigh of his own, and nodded. "Fine, tomorrow." He said, moving past her to enter the bathroom, intent on getting ready for bed.

June watched him go, sighing once more, exhaustion gripping her once more as she moved to her bedroom and plopped onto the bed. Pulling her hair out of its ponytail.

This was for the best. She thought to herself, as she looked up at her ceiling, eyes sliding closed. Jack deserved more than a selfish mother who kept things from him. Especially things like this. Tomorrow she would tell him everything as she promised, as she slowly drifted off to sleep...

Tomorrow morning came far sooner than she would have liked. Yawning she stretched her arms above her head. Her back and shoulders ached from helping Ratchet last night and, June grimaced, she stank. She had forgotten to shower before bed, obviously she had been far more tired than she had originally thought. Glancing at the clock June noted that it read five AM. Jack wouldn't be awake for a long while, so much for talking to him before she left for work. Perhaps they could talk tonight?

Nodding to herself, she headed for the bathroom and got ready for work. Once she was almost out the door she stopped at Jack's room, seeing her son sound asleep she moved further into the room, running her fingers through messy hair. Half expecting him to wake up but nothing. Grabbing a piece of paper from his notebook she left him a note telling him they would talk tonight before leaving the house, and into the car. Not before casting one final look around for anything out of the ordinary. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary she drove to work.

Hoping that work would take her mind off of things as she drove, thanking god that the roads were rather quiet, aside from a few other drivers. No doubt on their way to or from work. Thankfully the drive to the hospital was short as she pulled into her usual parking spot, and stepped out of the car. Purse slung over her shoulder as she walked through the doors. When, one of the other nurses, Rosie, beckoned her over.

"Good morning, June." She greeted, a tired smile on her lips. "There is a guy who wanted to talk to you."

As those words escaped Rosie's lips June felt her blood run cold once more, eyes wide.

Rosie, seemingly unaware of June's mood continued on. "He's in the waiting room. And in all honesty I don't know you're relationship with him but he is one fine looking man. And a charmer too, had even mean old Harriet blushing." With that Rosie walked off, not letting June speak.

Her heart thundered in her chest as she looked to where the waiting room was, biting down on her lips she tried, tried to tell herself it wasn't him but...

One foot in front of another she peered into the waiting room, eyes scanning the area, when they finally settled on the very man she thought she'd never seen again. Just as he turned to look at her, cold, cruel smile on his handsome face. Green eyes staring at her behind wire-rimmed glasses.

"Hello there, June Bug."

"David..." June choked out, he had found her...
