Chapter 33: Home
Jax POV
"Tell me you have my son." I said.
"I'm sorry, I don't Jackson. Real Army boys grabbed Cammy at Central Station. Abel wasn't with him." Jimmy said.
"Well they had to grill him before they tied his neck off." I said.
"No. It happened fast."
"Where the hell is my kid?!" I yelled at Jimmy.
"I understand you rage friend." Jimmy said. "If it were my son…"
"But it's not!" I said.
"Abel wasn't with Cammy in Belfast. Which means your boy is still in Vancouver." Jimmy said.
"Every word you've spit about my kid has been wrong. I'm not gonna trust this wave of bullshit." I said.
"Well maybe you'll believe a brother." Jimmy said. What did that mean?
"Jax, Liam O'neill." Liam said.
"What are you doing with Jimmy?" I asked.
"His crew is tied up in Newry. Hired us to watch his back while he's up north. I was with Jimmy saw the real provost scoop up Cammy outside the depot. Had no baby with him. That's for real." Liam said.
"I should come out there, talk to the guys who rounded him up." I said. "Maybe Cameron mentioned a contact or a place he took him."
"That'll never happen brother. You know the drill. The sons are just hired gun. Hell, we got two bloody loyalists in the charter one's the son of an orangeman." Liam said. "We're not inside the circle. Never have been."
"Yeah okay." I said and hung up the phone. "He said Abel's not in Belfast. Cameron didn't bring him."
Tara POV
"I explained it to Nate. I got him to sign." I told Gemma as I walked into the kitchen. "This gives me power of attorney so if anything happens while you're away…."
"thanks." Gemma said.
"It's a good place. Your mom did her research. The neurologist on staff specializes in late stage Alzheimer's." I said to Gemma.
"Does it have a garden?" Gemma asked.
I shrugged. "I don't know." I said.
"I can't believe I'm sending him off to a goddamn home." Gemma said.
"He'll be taken care of." I said.
"He'll die alone…just like she did." Gemma said.
Jax POV
"Hands look like mine feel." Clay said.
"We stick with plan A. You guys drop off the guns. Me and Clay will pick up mom, we all head north, find my kid." I said.
Ope handed me an envelope. "Here's ten grand for Serg's tracker. Sold the Panhead." Ope said.
"Thanks, bro. You ready to do this?" I asked the guys.
"Absolutely, yeah." They said.
"I'll wire that to Serg's guy in Vancouver." Bobby said.
Bella POV
I was sitting in the office working on some paperwork when Ope came in. "Hey." I said.
"Hey. So I'm gonna head north with the guys." He said.
"Figured you would. Jax and Abel are family." I said.
"You're not mad?" He asked.
"Why would I be? You're doing something to help my cousin."
"Your amazing you know that?" He said.
I walked over to him and stood up on my tip toes. I kissed him. "I try." I said.
Gemma POV
"I tried to make it right." Dad said.
"What Daddy?" I asked.
"You and … you and your mother." he said. "I know that you probably don't believe that."
"She swallowed us both up. I don't blame you." I said.
"She never recovered from Nathaniel's death. Blamed it all on herself. I know that burden landed on you." Dad said. He sniffed. "I prayed for your mother. Begged Jesus to take away her pain."
"You turned to God. Rose turned to Rose." I said.
"Her biggest regret…losing you. Don't let your family slip away." Dad said.
I could hear the sweet sound of motorcycles. Tig came in. "Hey Gem. Boys are here."
Tara POV
I was finishing packing a box when I looked up at the doorway and saw Jax. "Hey did you just get here?" I asked him.
"Yeah. Is Nate taking all this stuff?" Jax asked.
I shook my head. "No. Gemma wanted to pack up all the sentimental objects and valuables, put them in storage. The rest goes to the church." I said.
"You doing okay?" Jax asked.
"Yeah." I said. He looked like something was wrong. "What is it?"
"You want the truth, right?" He said and I nodded. "Got to tell you what's going on."
"Okay."
"They're pulling our bail on the church assault. Two days, we're all supposed to go back inside." Jax told me.
"Jesus. Supposed to?" I questioned. That's when I realized what was going on. "Oh my god! Where is he?"
"Vancouver. Somewhere." Jax said.
"You're heading up there?" I asked.
"Yeah. We hired a guy to help track him down. Going to take Gemma, head out when Nate's taken care of." He said.
"Did you tell Gemma about Abel?" I asked.
"Not yet. We will."
Gemma POV
The boys had just told me that they were taking me to Canada. "Bitch aged me two years. So what's that look like? Me in Canada?" I asked.
"We'll get you set up somewhere safe, off the grid. Get you good papers." Clay said.
"Maybe you go redhead for a while." Tig said.
I rolled my eyes at him. "Oh Christ." I muttered. "Rather shave my head."
"Heat will die down, Mom." Jax said.
"And when do I get to see my family? My grandson?" I asked.
"We'll figure it out." Jax said.
"It's our only choice, baby." Clay said and I sighed. "Good to see you Nate. How are you?" Clay said as Dad walked into the kitchen where we were sitting at.
"Hey Grandpa." Jax said.
"Why are you here?" Dad asked.
"Clay's here to help me get you settled." I told him.
"I don't need his help. This is what killed your mother." Dad said before walking out.
"Well, the old man certainly seems to remember me." Clay said.
"Are you okay, Mom?" Jax asked me.
"I should just stay clear of him." Clay said at the same time.
"Tara and I will handle it." I told them. I decided to go check on Dad.
Tara POV
"I think that's all of them." Jax said when he walked back into the spare bedroom.
"I want to come with you." I said. Jax looked at me confused. "To Canada."
"No." Jax said.
"I'm the only one who's not wanted. You're going to need my help." I said.
"What I need is for you to go back to work. Go back to work." Jax said. He was starting to piss me off.
"He's mine, too. I want to be with my family." I said.
That must have pissed Jax off. "We're not your family!" Jax yelled. "Do you see how deep I'm buried here? You don't want this."
"Don't tell me what I want! I asked for the truth, you gave it to me." I said.
"So you would stay put! You're not coming up North." Jax said.
"Yes I am!" I told Jax.
"You want to be an Old Lady? Then act like one! Do what your told! Pack your shit and head back to Charming." Jax yelled.
I moved some shit around. "I just helped your mother kill someone." I blurted out. "That Old Lady enough for you?!"
"What are you talking about?" Jax asked.
"The caretaker. She attacked your mother." I told him.
"What did you do?"
"I had no choice…it was self-defense. Tig helped us get rid of the body." I said.
Gemma came down at that moment. "Found one more." She said holding a box. "What?" Then she saw the wheelchair that she'd kept Amelia hostage in. "Oh, shit." She said.
"What happened?" Jax asked.
Just then Clay and Tig came downstairs. "Gotta go." Clay said.
"I'm dealing with something." Jax said.
"Yeah so are Bobby and Piney." Tig said.
"What's going on?" Clay asked.
"Apparently, our lovely ladies whacked the caretaker. And this idiot helped them!" Jax told Clay.
"What?" Clay asked.
"Actually, I just made a phone call." Tig said.
"Jesus Christ. This…later." Clay said. "Lets go."
Jax and Clay headed upstairs. Tig stared at me. "What happened to , 'Oh we can't tell Jax anything'?" Tig asked. "You two are killing me."
Tig followed Clay and Jax. "Sorry." I said. Gemma nodded. "I lost it. I don't know what he wants anymore."
"What do you want?" Gemma asked me.
"I'm just trying to get closer. I want to go with you to Vancouver." I said, quietly.
"No. That's a bad idea." Gemma said.
"I thought you, more than anyone would understand." I said.
"We're going to need you in Charming. If Jax goes away for that Church assault, and I'm god knows where someone has to take care of Abel. No one I trust more than you. You'll be a good mom." Gemma said.
I started crying. I didn't know what was wrong with me. "I'm sorry. I better go help Nate get ready." I said, starting to make my way upstairs.
"I'll be going with you." She said.
"Someone might see you." I said.
"My risk." She said and I nodded.
Jimmy POV
"How are you Mo?" I asked when she walked in.
"Jesus. How'd you get in?" She asked.
"Your lovely daughter." I said.
"What are you doing here?" She asked me.
"Looking for you. I know Cammy came to see you to set a meeting with your brother. Makes sense. I know you'd be my first choice to take care of a wayward infant." I said.
"Jimmy O'Phelan…the all-seeing, all-knowing wizard of base Belfast." Maureen said.
"Where's the baby, Maureen?" I asked. I needed leverage against the Teller family.
"He's not here. What do you care?" She asked me.
"He belongs with his Da." I said.
"It's not my decision…or yours." She said.
"But we know whose decision it is. And you have sway with the good priest." I said.
"Jimmy, I'm a half-broke shopkeeper. I've no sway with…"
"Things are in flux, darling." I said. "The world is changing. And life and the Short Strand had better bend to it, or we'll all snap like a twig. You need to decide what end of the stick you want to be holding. I'd hate to see you and your tight wee family out on the street."
"I don't know where the baby is." Maureen said.
"I suggest you inquire. Soon, yeah?" I said. I needed the baby and I needed Bella. Victoria was so close.
Tara POV
"What happened?" Jax asked me when he and the others pulled into the parking lot.
"She just took off." I said.
"What do you mean she took off?" Clay asked.
"I went inside to check Nate. When I came back, Gemma and the car were gone." I said.
"Did she say anything?" Clay asked.
I shook my head. "No." I said. "She was crying when I left her. Nate was begging her to take him home. It broke her heart."
"Jesus! She went home!" Jax yelled over the bikes. "She went to see her family."
"Abel." Clay said.
Gemma POV
I walked into the office at TM. I looked at Bells. "Neeta been here with the baby?" I asked.
She hesitated. Then she shook her head. "No." I nodded.
I walked back out as my cell started ringing. "Yeah."
"Gemma? It's Maureen Ashby. Know who I am?" She said.
"Yeah. How'd you get this number?" I asked.
"Just listen. Cammy Hayes took your grandson. He was my cousin. He brought the wee one to me to take care of him." Maureen said.
"What?" My chest started hurting.
"Abel's in Belfast." She said and I collapsed to the ground.
I heard the bikes approaching then I heard Jax. "Ma! Breathe. Breathe Ma!" Jax said.
"What the hell happened?" I heard Bells ask. "I thought you were going to tell her. She was looking for Abel."
What happened to Abel? "I didn't get time." Jax said.
Then I heard the ambulance before the blackness came.
