Warning: This chapter does get a little heavy.

I was running through the forest, my breath labored and body aching. I couldn't remember what I was running from but as I looked down at my hands, all I saw was dark crimson blood. I gasped, uncertain if it was mine or someone else's... but whose? As I broke through the forest, I tripped and crashed to the earth, scraping my knees and forearms. The dress I wore tore, splitting all the way to above the knee. It was then I realized I was in my prayer robes, however they were saturated with blood and grime, more red and tan than white anymore.

I whipped my head around, trying to get an idea of where I was, but I stopped as my eyes glued to the bright red orb floating in the sky above: the Blood Moon. Staring in awe, fear rippled through me. The Blood Moon was an ancient legend that I had only thought was a story; yet here it was above me. It was an omen of corruption, that evil had claimed the land and as long as the Blood Moon persisted, that evil would persist and flourish.

Creaking and groaning noises sounded in front of me and I tore my eyes away from the crimson moon to inspect the noise. My body froze, horrified by what I saw... from the ground long dead monsters were rising, their bones magically assembling. Once constructed, the skeletons moved about, like puppets, their movements jerky and bones rattling. This reminded me of the story Link had told me. He had called them stalkoblins - the skeletal remains of bokoblins that rose from the dead. Just what kind of evil power was at work?

Link.

Where was he? Where were the others? Impa, Revali, Urbosa, Daruk, Mipha? Where was I? I glanced behind me, a cry escaping my lips. It was Hyrule Castle. The majestic, ancient castle so revered was severely damaged - the walls collapsed, fire consumed it, and a dark, ominous aura surrounded it.

A sharp pain went through my skull and I fell to the ground, the hot trickle of blood running down my neck and cheek. A burning pain emanated from the back of my head. As I hit the earth, I saw skeletal feet dancing around me, silently cheering at taking me down.

Was this it? Was this where I died? Alone and defeated by undead monsters? What had become of everyone else? Where were they?

Tears pooled from my eyes, silently dripping onto the hard, dry ground. The corners of my vision began to darken, my vision going fuzzy. I heard a mechanical clanking and turned my head. In the distance I could see a blurry object that glowed red. It looked like it had long legs extending from the main body. Was that... A guardian? But why was it red?

The distorted object stopped, a red light blinding me as the glowing blur fixed its sights on me.

"You are so close, Princess!" A voice suddenly echoed out, the world around me melting away, turning to black. "It is right in front of you! You must realize before it is too late! Otherwise this will be your destiny!"

"Hylia?" I whispered, "Please, can't you tell me more?"

"It is right in front of you." The Goddess merely reiterated, "And has been for some time."

I opened my mouth to try again, but before I uttered one word, the ground underneath me gave way. Suddenly I was falling, a scream torn from my open mouth. I plummeted into the darkness, swallowed by it until I knew no more.

I jolted from my bed only to whimper in pain as burning hot daggers assaulted my mind. I clutched my head, curling into a tight ball as I fell back onto my bed. Tears leaked from my tightly squeezed eyes and I sobbed against my pillow, trying to muffle my voice. I wanted to scream the pain was so intense, but I held it in.

Why are these visions so painful? I wondered, the thought alone causing more waves of pain to wash over me. Every thought was pure agony, moving hurt, sound hurt, breathing hurt. Everything was pain - I was pain. The world around me was gone, all there was was this searing anguish that claimed me, making me its prisoner; drowning out my other senses and overloading them with misery.

All I could do was lay in my bed, trying not to move, not to think, to not do anything... while I road out the pain. I wasn't sure how long it took, but eventually it began to fade away - slowly. As my senses returned and I wasn't overloaded with pain, I let out a long, ragged breath, my body relaxing as every muscle had been tightly clenched.

My head still throbbed, but it was only a bad headache now. Sitting up on my forearms, I felt a wave of nausea roll over me and I bolted for my bathroom, spewing out the contents of my stomach into the sink. I collapsed against the sink, leaning against its ceramic base. Tears quietly streamed from my eyes and I felt my hair stick to my face and the back of my neck. I felt horrible.

As the nausea passed, I stood up, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I looked as if I had just returned from a long, grueling training session: my eyes sunk in, my skin pale, and body trembling. I swallowed, and ran a hand through my hair.

I stumbled out of the bathroom and crawled into my bed, just wanting to disappear into sleep's depths. However it was then I remembered I was meeting Link that morning at the stables. I glanced outside through a window and saw the land was just becoming illuminated by the dawn's soft rays. I threw a hand over my eyes, thankful I still had a few hours before I needed to meet Link, which would give me time to recover.

I laid in bed for a little longer, dozing in and out of sleep. Eventually, I pulled myself out of bed, groggy and the remains of a headache still present. I stuffed the few things I was bringing into a backpack and rolled up a sleeping bag, which I clasped to the bottom of my backpack. From there I made my way through the castle and down to the stables.

Reaching the stables, I saw Link, who already had both horses out, saddles and reins on. Seeing me he waved, a bright smile on his face. "Hey!" He called as I walked over.

Joining him, I grabbed Icefire's reins. "Hey." I returned, feebly.

"I figured I'd get the horses ready." Link said, as I had arrived a little late. "Slept in?"

"Something like that." I answered softly, still not feeling up to par.

Link frowned, inspecting me, "Are you feeling ok, Zelda? You look unwell."

I shook my head and forced a smile, "I'm fine. Just a slight headache. It should clear up once we're on the road."

Link still looked uncertain, worry creasing his brow. "We could always wait a little bit."

I shook my head, "No, that's alright. I'll be fine. Just need some fresh air." To settle the issue, I hopped on Icefire's back, then gave Link a reassuring smile. Link hesitated for a moment, but then he climbed onto Epona's back. We trotted away from the stables, going along the outskirts of Castle Town until we passed through the gates and hit one of the main roads that ran through Central.

I wasn't even sure where Link's parents lived, but I figured it was close enough that we'd make it there within a day's travel. As we rode onwards, the soft breeze and crisp morning air did help clear away what remained of my headache, making me feel better.

Still, the images I had seen in the vision haunted me. Although I hadn't been berated by images of those dearest to me brutally slaughtered, it still wasn't a pleasant vision. Hyrule Castle had been lain to waste, and spooky undead monsters had arisen from the ground... and then there was the strange blurry figure I had seen, shaped like a guardian but glowing bright red instead of blue. What was it? A new kind of monster?

I sighed, my eyes traveling to Link in front of me. I wanted to say something to him, to tell him what had happened this morning, about the vision and the one I had at the Spring of Power. What I had seen and how much they were starting to bother me. Yet the words lodged themselves in my throat. I didn't want to worry him; this was my burden to bear. Link already had his own struggles. He didn't need mine.

It was then that a hollow feeling fell over me. Even though Link was right next to me, it felt as if he was far away. As if there was a giant chasm separating us, and no matter how badly I struggled to close, it I couldn't.

You'll always be alone. The voice inside me echoed out suddenly, Why would anyone want to be with a pathetic, useless girl like you?

"My parents live in Deya Village." Link cut through my internal struggle, completely oblivious to the battle I was going through. "It's just before Dueling Peaks."

"I've heard of it." I replied, "But I've never been there."

"I imagine not." Link said, looking back on me, the smile from earlier still on his face. "It's a pretty quaint village."

Link looked so happy, I didn't want to bring him down. So instead, I forced a smile onto my face and said in the most pleasant voice I could muster, "Well, I'm excited to see it."

Link laughed, "It isn't much."

"That's ok." I said. Although I wasn't in the greatest of moods, it was still nice talking to Link.

Link continued to talk as we traveled, surprising me as normally I was the one that dictated our conversations; Link usually remained quiet - content with listening. Or simply used to his impervious, stoic mask he wore when around others. It had taken me several months to finally wear away that mask and see Link for who he was. But even now, he had a habit of falling into that solemn knight role he was used to.

As we travelled, Link talked mainly about his family, and I was happy to listen, eager to learn more about them. By the time late afternoon rolled around, I found myself in a much better mood, the dark, depressing thoughts from this morning drowned out with stories Link told me of his family.

By now Dueling Peaks was looming ahead of us, the dark gray peaks rising high into the sky. Link slowed suddenly, and pointed to his left. I could see a very faint, worn trail through the grass, which must have led to Deya Village.

Link turned down it, confirming my suspicions. The trail wasn't long and before I knew it we were at the top of a small hill, looking down on the tiny village that was Link's home. The village itself was in a small gully, surrounded by high ground on all sides. Link slowly descended and I followed after. As we wove our way through the village, I noticed people milling about, carrying buckets of water or taking care of horses. It was indeed a very quiet and quaint village as Link had said, but I rather liked it. It was peaceful.

Link led us to a house near the back of the village, a trail of smoke rising from behind the house. Dismounting Epona, Link led her to a small shed, where there was already one horse, his gray pelt dotted with white. I slid off Icefire and led him to the shed, where Link left the horses, allowing them to graze on the patchy grass.

"That's my father's horse, Thunder." Link said, pointing to the muscular steed. He was strong and sturdy. "He's old, but still a good horse."

I nodded and followed Link to the door, my stomach twisting as a wave of nerves surged up inside me. My fears of meeting Link's family had dissipated this morning, but now that we were actually here, standing right outside their front door, it all came rushing back. Sensing my nervousness, Link reached for my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Our eyes met briefly and I felt a little bit calmer. Then the door was flung open and a girl several years younger than me greeted us, her arms folded over her chest and an annoyed look on her face. "You're late." She said, scowling.

Link scratched the back of his head, releasing my hand. "We got here as fast as we could."

Aryll arched her eyebrows, "We?" She started, but then noticed me, her eyes widening. "That's-"

"Why Link, you're back." A woman appeared next to Aryll, who must have been Aryll and Link's mother. Her blue eyes drifted to me and she smiled, "And you brought a friend. It's nice to meet you."

Aryll tapped her foot, still annoyed, "Mom, that's the Princess! As in Princess Zelda!"

Saoirse blinked a few times, her eyes - which looked exactly like Link's - falling on me. "Oh my, what an unexpected surprise." She motioned to Link and I, "Please come in. Your father is out on an errand. He'll be home shortly." Saoirse addressed Link.

Cautiously I walked into Link's house, carefully taking it in. It was a nice house, homey and well-maintained. It was a decent size, feeling just right for the amount of people that lived in it. We walked into the kitchen and Aryll plopped down on a chair around the wooden table. Her eyes found Link and I, squinting at us in suspicion.

"Well?" She finally asked as Saoirse busied herself in the kitchen, getting some snacks out.

"Well?" Link returned, arching an eyebrow at his sister.

Aryll huffed in annoyance, but it was Saoirse that replied, "It is wonderful to finally meet you, Princess Zelda. My son has told us all about you." Surprised, I glanced at Link, seeing him blush slightly at his mother's words. "Please, sit. I'll get dinner ready once Damek, my husband, has returned. I sent him to get supplies for Aryll's birthday tomorrow."

"Thank you." I said, sitting next to Link at the table. "I apologize if I'm intruding, but Link said you wouldn't mind."

Saoirse only smiled, "You're always welcome here, Princess."

"Please, Zelda is fine." I replied, preferring to drop my formal title.

"So what exactly are you doing here with my brother, Zelda?" Aryll asked, her eyes intently on me.

"Aryll." Link warned.

"What?" She fought back. "I want to know what happened!"

I arched my eyebrows in curiosity, "What happened?"

"Aryll, mind your manners." Saoirse said patiently, "If there is anything to tell, I'm sure they will share if you are patient."

I looked between the three family members, not entirely sure what they were referring to. My eyes finally settled on Link, whose face was slightly red and he was avoiding making eye contact with me. "Link." I hissed under my breath, gaining his attention.

Link glanced at me, scratching the back of his neck. "Sorry, don't mind them."

"What are they talking about?" I whispered, leaning in slightly closer to Link. Link glanced away, looking... nervous? I hadn't ever seen Link nervous so I wasn't sure. Biting my lip, I took a guess, "Us?"

Link's eyes flickered back to me. Now he was definitely nervous. "Yeah." He breathed. "I may have talked to them about you... About what happened between us."

I nodded, finally understanding. We hadn't discussed what we were going to tell his family, but I had told him it was alright to tell them. Ultimately the decision was up to him. "Are you going to tell them?" I whispered, giving him a reassuring look to inform him that I was fine with it.

"Tell us what?" Aryll asked, leaning in closer to Link to eavesdrop on us.

I glanced at Link, who sighed and shook his head. It was very odd seeing Link like this; not his normal calm, cool, and collected self. But I didn't mind. I wanted to learn more about Link; Seeing him with his family allowed me to glimpse more of who he was.

"I suppose if I don't tell you now, you're just going to keep pestering me." Link glared at his sister, who smiled sheepishly.

"I'm sure Aryll can wait until Damek returns." Saoirse said, giving Aryll a pointed look.

Link chuckled, "The suspense might kill her, Mom. I'm fine telling you guys now. I'll tell dad once he's back."

"If you're sure." Saoirse said. "It would do Aryll good to learn some patience."

Aryll huffed and folded her arms over her chest. "You're curious too, Mom."

"I am." Saoirse admitted, "But waiting a little won't kill me."

Link shook his head, amused by his family. "It's alright. Zelda and I are fine telling you. We finally talked about... what's been happening between us..." Link glanced at me, again looking nervous. I nodded at him, trying to reassure him even though I too felt anxious. "Well, we decided we want to be together." He finished, his eyes still meeting mine. I reached for his hand under the table and gave it a small squeeze.

Link looked back at his family, awaiting their response. Aryll was the first to respond, grinning from ear to ear. "About time!" She exclaimed. "Here I thought you were going to be the pining knight forever."

Link scowled at his sister, but her comment made me laugh a little, causing all eyes to turn to me. "Sorry!" I said and quickly tried to explain, "I just think out of the two of us, I was the one pining. Link was always very composed around me."

At that moment, the door opened, heavy footsteps sounding on the floor. "Dad, Link brought his girlfriend home!" Aryll shouted and scurried off to tell their father all the details.

"Aryll!" Link exclaimed and ran after her, trying to do damage control.

As the two sibling disappeared around the corner, I couldn't help but smile. It was nice seeing Link act more open and... playful even. "I'm glad you and Link sorted things out." Saoirse said, snapping my attention back to her. "He was... troubled, I suppose, about you last time he was home."

"He was?" I asked.

Saoirse nodded, "I'm sure you're well aware of the position you two are in. I don't think you came to your decision easily, but I'm still glad the two of you are together. I can tell Link is happy. Ever since he acquired the Master Sword, he's grown more serious, more reserved. But he's more of his old self now. I can still see he bares much on his shoulders, as do you, Zelda. I know the road ahead of both of you will be long and grueling, so please, look out for each other."

"I will. Link... he's very important to me. I know things will be very difficult, but together I believe we'll find a way." I confided in Saoirse. Like her son, she was easy to talk to.

"That's good to hear." Saoirse smiled and looked towards the door. "As you probably heard, my husband is home. I hope you don't mind venison, salad, and scalloped potatoes for dinner. Damek even picked up some fresh rolls for tonight and tomorrow. And I'll bake one of my specialty cakes for tomorrow." Saoirse winked at me.

"That sounds wonderful. Do you need any assistance?" I asked, standing up.

"Oh no. You're our guest, Zelda. Please sit and enjoy. I'll have Damek boil some tea once he gets in here." Saoirse said, making me sit back down.

"Does Link get his cooking skills from you?" I asked, curious as I watched her pull out various ingredients.

"I may have taught him a thing or two." She replied.

It was then a muscular man with brown hair and brown eyes walked into the room, Link by his side and Aryll following behind, grinning. The man, Link's father, patted Link on the head, making Link frown. Then Damek's eyes turned to me and he gave me a giant grin. "So this is Princess Zelda? It is a pleasure to meet you." He introduced and then bowed to me.

I rose once more, waving my hands in front of me. "Oh no, the pleasure is all mine. Thank you so much for allowing me to join you. And please, you can just call me Zelda."

Damek chuckled, "I know it's not as fancy as what you're probably used to, but welcome to our home."

"Thank you." I replied, "You're home is lovely."

"I'm afraid we don't have a guest room, but we can kick Link out onto the couch." Damek said, nudging his son.

"Oh, that's not necessary. I bought a sleeping bag." I pointed to my backpack, which was propped up against the wall behind me.

Damek frowned. "A guest sleeping on the floor in my house! Preposterous."

"I really don't mind. I'm used to sleeping in it after traveling all over Hyrule." I reassured.

Damek shook his head and glanced at Link, "Persistent, isn't she?"

Link merely chuckled under his breath, his eyes glancing up at me, a soft smile on his face. "It's alright Zelda. Just sleep in my bed."

I folded my arms, not sure why I was being so adamant. But it was discourteous to refuse a guest's hospitality, so I gave a stiff nod in agreement. "Very well. If you really don't mind."

Damek laughed, "You're a spirited one, Zelda. It's nice to see that the Nobility hasn't beaten that out of you." His eyes softened slightly. "I don't envy you kiddos one bit. The Nobility is harsh in their own way. It's not going to be easy, but for what it's worth, you have our support."

Although I knew Link's family was very different from my own, I hadn't expected such a warm and welcoming response. "That... means a lot, actually." I said, gratitude filling my chest. It was as if another hand was stretching out to me, making all the other ones visible again... Urbosa, Daruk, Falnore, Mipha, Dorephan, Revali, Impa, Vorel, Link, and his family... They were all there, willing to offer a hand. Why was it so hard for me to see them at times?

Saoirse stepped next to her husband, greeting him with a warm smile, "I'm sure the two of you will manage fine on your own, but if you ever need anything, you know where to find us." She then patted Damek on the bicep, "In the meantime, why don't you make some tea for us while I cook dinner."

"Of course, Dearest." Damek said, giving his wife a loving glance and a soft peck on the cheek. For a brief moment, I wondered if Link and I would ever be like that, so affectionate around each other. I quickly chased the thought away as I flushed red.

Damek grabbed a tea kettle and a tin of tea, then exited into a different room. Saoirse returned to prepping dinner. "Need help?" Link offered his mother, who nodded. Link grabbed a knife and started chopping.

I glanced at Aryll who sat back down at the table, her eyes coming to rest on me. I looked down at my hands, not sure what to say to Link's sister. "Link mentioned you are training to be a blacksmith." I finally uttered.

Aryll nodded, "Yep. Not as flashy as Royal Guard, but it's well respected and pays just as well."

I grabbed my backpack, fumbling in it. "I know it's not much, but I did want to give you something for your birthday. Maybe you'll find a use for it." I pulled out Farosh's scale which was wrapped in black cloth. Aryll, her curiosity piqued, took the bundle of cloth off, revealing the precious, yellow scale underneath. There was still a soft glow to it.

Aryll widened her eyes upon seeing it, not expecting such a gift. "What is it?" She whispered, still in awe.

"It's a scale from the dragon Farosh." I informed, a grin forming on my face. It appeared I had done well in selecting my present for Link's sister.

"This is amazing." She breathed, running her hands over it. Holding the scale up to the light, she began to inspect it. "I wonder..."

"What do you have there, Aryll?" Saoirse asked, seeing the flat, oval object in Aryll's hands.

"It's a present from Zelda." Aryll beamed, clearly delighted. "It's a scale from Farosh!"

"A dragon's scale..." Saoirse breathed. "That's rare material."

"So we can use it to make something?" Aryll asked, seeing the eager glint in her mother's eyes.

Saoirse nodded, "Yes, but it is difficult."

Noticing our discussion, Link set his knife down. His eyes fell on the scale, instantly recognizing it. His eyes went to me, slightly surprised, but thankful. "I figured you might get more use out of it than I." I explained, looking away from Link. "Please let me know if you are able to make anything out of it."

"Will do!" Aryll said, jumping from her chair. "I want to start testing it out now!"

"Aryll, we closed up in the forge for today." Saoirse said.

"I'm just going to do some material tests!" Aryll said. "Get a feel for it."

Saoirse sighed, but she didn't seem upset. Turning to me, she said, "Thank you, Zelda. Aryll is always eager to work with new materials."

"I honestly had no idea what to get her. I'm glad she likes it." I stated truthfully.

Saoirse laughed. "You have a good intuition then. Although I think Aryll would have liked almost anything. She always enjoys the assortment of candies Link brings back from the castle."

"I got her more than just candy this year." Link called.

Saoirse chuckled, "Some rupees?"

Link paused before replying. "I didn't really have time to buy anything."

"Fair enough." Saoirse said, "Especially with the state Hyrule is in, I don't blame you." She walked over and placed her hand on Link's shoulder, only for a few seconds, then returned to her task.

I wondered then if it was hard for Link's parents, knowing their son was constantly at risk, fighting monsters and traveling with me. He was at the center of this war, along with me... And while my father didn't particularly care what happened to me, Link's parents must have worried about him.

Link and Saoirse finished preparing the meal, then joined me at the table as they waited for it to cook. "Saoirse," I said as she sat down, "Could you tell me about your line of work? I'm curious. Link told me a little bit, but I'd like to hear more from you."

"I don't think my work is particularly interesting to discuss, at least not the mechanics of it. But I can tell you about some of the works I've made and even some of my more memorable customers." I nodded, eager to hear. I wanted to learn more about Link's family.

Saoirse began to tell a story, stopping midway as Damek returned with the kettle of tea in hand. He poured us all a drink and listened as his wife finished her story. Soon after she told a new one. Damek even chimed in, adding to it then told his own from his days as a knight, which I was also interested in.

Before I knew it the time had passed and dinner was ready. Link went to fetch his sister and I helped set the table, after insisting that I assist somehow. Finally we were all situated around the table, a hot meal in front of us. All of us were hungry, so we swiftly piled our plates high.

Aryll began to talk to her mom about what she had found out about the dragon scales properties, like its density, mass, malleability... I tuned out as Damek called my name.

"Zelda," He started, his eyes kind, "Forgive me for saying, but you do look very much like your mother, the Queen."

"I get that a lot." I replied, wondering if he knew my mother. "Did you know her?"

"We knew each other, yes." Damek gave a brief nod, "But I didn't know her well. We worked with each other several times, but beyond work, I did not talk to her. Even so, I had the utmost respect for Lady Winfree. She was a benevolent Queen but determined too. She had a vision for Hyrule and it's people and she did whatever was in her power to achieve it. I was saddened to hear of her passing. You have my deepest condolences." Damek bowed his head in respect.

I stared at Damek, not sure how I felt. My mother's name, which I hadn't heard anyone utter in years, had ripped through me like a sharpened dagger, slicing right through my heart. Yet... it was... nice? To see that my mother's memory still lived on the people of Hyrule, that they still respected her memory. If I was to be Queen one day, that was the kind of Queen I wanted to be. One that was strong and determined but gracious and respected by her people.

"Thank you, Damek." I said, my voice wavering slightly.

Damek looked up at me, seeing my crestfallen face. "Forgive me Princess, I didn't mean to upset you."

I shook my head, "No, it's not that. I appreciate your words. It makes me... happy that she is remembered in such a way by the people of Hyrule."

"Your mother was a great Queen. I'm sure almost everyone in Hyrule remembers her with fondness and honor." Saoirse added, having stopped her conversation with Aryll to listen. "I have no doubt you will be a great Queen like her."

I blinked at Saoirse, shocked at her words. As far as I knew, there were nothing but malicious rumors about me running throughout Hyrule, and Saoirse had only just met me. Could she really make such an assessment so soon? "I'm not so sure..." I replied hesitantly, "I don't have the best reputation in Hyrule. I'm sure you've heard what others say about me. And if I'm being honest, the throne isn't something I want. It's just something I know I have to accept."

I saw Link glance at me from my peripheral, not expecting that. I had never told him that I didn't want to be Queen. It wasn't something I talked about much since there was nothing to be done about it. I would be Queen one day and that was it.

Soairse smiled, "And that's why you'll be a great Queen. I am of the firm belief that those who do not want power are those who are best suited for it. Because who would want to be King or Queen if they truly knew all the responsibilities that came along with it? All they see is fortune and fame, and get swallowed up in it, forgetting about their duties. So I think you'll do just fine."

"With great power comes great responsibility." Damek added. "And I think once people meet you, Zelda, they'll see first hand none of those ridiculous rumors are true. You're a very bright girl who cares very much for Hyrule and its people."

"Thank you." I whispered, touched by their kind words. Although they hardly knew me, they welcomed me into their home and treated me as if I was family. I could see why Link treasured them so much.

"Now we better eat our food before it gets cold!" Damek laughed. With that we quickly devoured our meal.

Afterwards, we all helped clean up and then went into the living room, fresh tea and some cookies in hand. Aryll put several more logs on the fireand pulled out a deck of cards. "Game night?" She said hopefully.

"It's your birthday celebration." Damek laughed, "We can do whatever you want, kiddo." He ruffled Aryll's short hair, causing it to go into disarray. But she didn't seem to mind.

I leaned over to Link and whispered, "I don't know how to play."

Link narrowed his eyes, "Really? You've never played cards?"

I shook my head, feeling chagrined.

"Cards are more of commoner game, Link." Damek explained, overhearing us. "I don't think I've ever seen a noble touch a deck of cards." Damek waved me over to him. "The game we like to play is called Royal House." Damek pulled out a card that had an image of a Queen on it. "This is the card everyone wants to get by the end of the game. However there are other cards that are also important, like the king, the jester, the knight..." He showed me an array of cards, all resembling members of a royal court. "Generally by the end of the game, whoever has the queen wins. The thing is, before time runs out, we need to try and figure out where the Queen is: still in the deck or in someone's hand."

"So its a strategy game?" I surmised.

Damke chuckled, "In a way. Why don't you and I play as a team. I could use the help." He winked at me.

"Alright." I agreed. "I don't know how much help I'll be."

"Ha! You'll do great." Damek said, and Link groaned from over in the corner.

"This isn't going to go well." Link shook his head.

"You're just upset you got no chance of winning now." Aryll cheered.

I glanced around the room, wondering if I had missed something. Seeing my expression, Link came to my rescue, "My father and Aryll always win. And strategy comes naturally to you Zelda, so Dad's got an asset on his side."

"Oh..." I said. "I mean, I still have no idea what I'm doing."

"I'm sure you'll pick it up fast." Link assured.

Damek laughed. "You just didn't act fast enough, son. Figured I'd recruit Zelda to my side before anyone else did."

"Even with her help, I'll still beat all of you!" Aryll boasted, slapping the cards down on the table. "Now let's play!"

"We have to wait for mom." Link scowled at his sister.

"Mom hurry up!" Aryll shouted, "Game night!"

On cue, Saoirse appeared, a tray of goodies in her hands. "Apologies, I figured we'd all enjoy some cookies and candy to snack on."

"Oh, is that chocolate!" Aryll asked, ogling the plate.

"Yes, Link brought it back from the castle. As a part of your birthday gift." Saoirse explained.

"Thanks, Link!" Aryll said as she snatched a chocolate, popping it into her mouth.

"You'll get the other part of your gift tomorrow." Link said.

Aryll smirked, "Bet I know what it is."

"Would you have preferred nothing?" Link asked, arching an eyebrow.

Aryll rolled her eyes, "I was just joking with you. At least I can buy some materials for the forge with rupees."

"Well if you two are done chit-chatting," Damek called, "Zelda and I have a game to win."

"Bring it on, Dad!" Aryll spat back, a competitive glow in her eyes. "And I'm not going to take it easy on you, just because you're a Princess, Zelda!"

I blinked, not sure exactly what kind of scenario I had found myself in. It appeared the competitive ones in the family were Damek and Aryll, while Saoirse and Link watched the chaos unfold. Somehow I found myself in the middle of the chaos. I glanced at Link, who merely shrugged at me, trying to hide a smirk.

He was enjoying this!

Although I felt very uncertain, seeing Link so carefree and having fun, made it all worth it. I had no idea what was going on, but I'd try my best to get up to speed.

"And the winner is..." Aryll started as the hour glass ran out of sand, "ME!"

Damek and I both sighed, folding our hand of cards in defeat. We had been playing for several hours. The game actually wasn't that hard, and I had picked it up quickly. After a few rounds of playing with Damek, I started playing on my own. And although I had not expected the competitiveness between Aryll and Damek, I found that I fit right in, combating them with my own competitive nature. Link and Saoirse played along, seeming to enjoy watching Damek, Aryll, and I compete rather than actually play the game.

We all had won at least one game, however Aryll had won the most, which she made sure everyone knew.

"Alright, Dear," Saoirse said, "I'm glad you had fun, but we should be getting to bed."

Aryll folded her arms, pouting, "But Mom!"

"You probably want to get to bed at a reasonable time," Saoirse advised, "Especially since if you get up early enough, I'll show you some tricks to working with dragon scales."

Aryll didn't need anymore coaxing. She ran off to bed in the blink of an eye, disappearing down the hall that led to the bedrooms.

Saoirse smirked slightly, her bargain with Aryll successful. "I best be off to bed too. Aryll will be up at the crack of dawn." Saoirse gathered several of the mugs and a tray of treats, which we had somehow eaten most of.

"I can help." I offered, grabbing the rest of the mugs and following Saoirse into the kitchen.

"Thank you, Zelda." Saoirse said. "You can just set them by the sink. I'll do the dishes tomorrow."

"Alright."

We walked back into the living room, where Link and Damek were. Upon seeing us, Damek stood up, stretching. "Well I think it's time for this old man to hit the hay. Link, make sure you put the fire out."

Link nodded in response.

"Goodnight you two." Saoirse said, walking over to her husband, "I'll make omelets for breakfast, assuming Aryll let's me escape from the forge for a moment."

"I can make breakfast, mom." Link offered.

"That would be lovely, Link." Saoirse called, and then the two disappeared down the hall, leaving Link and I alone in the living room. I glanced at Link who was sitting on the floor in front of the fire. Joining him, I sat beside him, the warmth of the fire feeling nice on my skin.

"It looked like you had fun." Link said.

I smiled, "I did. Thank you for inviting me."

"Of course." Link replied, a warm smile on his face, his eyes aglow with firelight as he looked at me. "I'm glad you came. You fit right in."

"I didn't expect to get so competitive over a card game."

"Yeah, that's pretty typical for game night. Dad and Aryll go all out." Link chuckled, "And I'm not surprised you did either."

"I can be rather competitive." I admitted.

"Yeah, I found that out after your little showdown with Revali."

"Oh right." I said, having forgotten about that.

Link nudged me with his shoulder, causing me to look up at him. His eyes were fixed on the fire, but there was a grin on his face. His hair was in its normal loose pony, loose strands of hair framing his smooth face. In that moment I realized just how handsome he was.

"I hope we can do this more." Link said as he turned to meet my gaze. "After we defeat Calamity Ganon, I hope we can have more nights like this. Maybe even do something with the other champions and Impa."

I nodded, captivated for a moment by Link. Swallowing, I replied, "I'd like that too." Link's hand found mine, and we entangled our fingers together as we stared at the fire, simply enjoying the peace and quiet together. I brought my knees up to my chest, resting my chin on them.

We sat there, holding hands for awhile, the warmth of the fire luring me into sleep. I yawned, finding I was growing sleepy.

"Tired?" Link asked.

"A little." I replied.

"Come on, I'll show you were my room is." Link got up, pulling me to my feet by my hands. I quickly grabbed my backpack from the kitchen, the followed him down the hall. "This is the bathroom." Link pointed to the first door on the left. We walked past another door, and Link's was the following one on the right. He opened the door and quickly lit a candle on his nightstand.

It was a small room, with a bed, a dresser, a desk, and weapons hanging along the walls or propped up against the walls. "Are all of these yours?" I asked, running my hand along a smooth sword resting against the wall next to the dresser.

"Some are." Link replied. "But some are pieces mom and Aryll made and they ran out of room to store them in the forge, so they put them in my room. Mom sometimes travels to neighboring towns and will sell any extra weapons she has."

"I see." I said, admiring the craftsmanship of the weapons. They all looked like works of art.

"The bed is kind of small." Link said, "But it's comfy."

"I really don't mind sleeping on the floor." I said, pulling my sleeping bag out.

Link arched an eyebrow, "Or would you rather share the bed, just sleep on top of it in the sleeping bag?" He asked in a teasing tone.

I frowned, folding my arms over my chest. "It was one time."

"I could have slept on the floor." Link replied.

I sighed. "Ok, fine. You win. I'll sleep in the bed. Here." I tossed Link the sleeping bag. "Use it if you want."

Link merely chuckled as I left for the bathroom. Quickly I got ready for bed and changed into a comfy pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Returning to Link's room, I crawled into his bed, snuggling underneath the covers as Link now got himself ready for bed. He returned moments later, a pair of joggers on and shirtless, his hair down. He unfolded the sleeping bag, positioning it by the bed. I handed him an extra pillow, which he took. "If you need anything, let me know."

"Thanks, Link." I said, curling into a ball underneath the covers.

Link blew out the candle, plunging us into darkness except for the soft glow of starlight coming through the window. "Goodnight, Zee." Link called.

"Goodnight." I answered, relaxing into his bed. He was right, it was very comfortable.

Yet as I closed my eyes, sleep didn't come. Instead, images of undead monsters filled my mind, followed by an all consuming fire and the screams of civilians. I opened my eyes and rolled over, a hand kneading my forehead. Why were these visions returning to me now?

The vision from this morning had dampened my mood, but after spending time with Link and his family, I had virtually forgotten about them, pushing them away. Yet now they were resurfacing, haunting me once more.

I started to breathe deeply, hoping if I could clear my mind, the visions would disappear and I could lose myself in sleep. But then the thought struck me, what if even worse vision awaited me in my sleep? I recalled the pain from this morning, and with each vision it only got worse. I rubbed my forehead, trying to reason with myself; the visions were always far and few between. I had never had two in a row. Why would that change now?

But now that I had thought about it, the fear was there. Trying once more, I closed my eyes, breathing in and out. However more images filled my mind: Urbosa's charred body, Revali's wings broken and twisted, Impa's eyes slowly turning lifeless...

My eyelids flashed open, and I brought my hands up to my face. Why was this happening now? Why couldn't I just fall asleep? Why did these thoughts have to continuously plague me? I was trying! I was trying so hard to prevent such a fate... And yet I kept having these visions, a constant reminder that if I didn't unlock my powers, this would be the fate of Hyrule and everyone I loved. Was this Hylia's way of telling me that no matter what else I did it was all futile? It seemed like a cruel way to do so. Why did I have to see such graphic and horrific images of those dearest to me? Was that really the only way to get the point across? I already knew what was at stake!

These thoughts began to consume me as I stared up at the ceiling, sleep far away as my mind raced. No matter what I tried the images wouldn't leave my head, they simply kept replaying over and over.

This was all my fault. Everyone would die because of me. I only had one thing to do, and I couldn't even manage that. My friends, my family, all of Hyrule would be destroyed and consumed by evil because one silly Princess couldn't do the one things she was born to do!

You're worthless. The voice inside my head range out, tearing into me. Pathetic. No wonder everyone at the castle hates you. You Deserve It.

I flinched at the thoughts, my hand reaching out, wanting to call for Link. He was right there next to me, and yet he felt so far away. This was my struggle. Why should I bother him with it? These visions, this pain... It was my responsibility, my burden. I wouldn't concern anyone else with such matters. And once more, I felt all alone. All the hands that were outstretched, offering me support had evanesced, leaving me alone to wither in my own turmoil. There was nothing in the darkness - just me.

I swallowed, covering my eyes with my hands. The darkness greeted me with more images: blood staining the ground as piles and piles of dead soldiers littered the battlefields. Daruk's burnt and blistered body flashed before me, followed by Link's still corpse. I sat up in bed, clutching my head with both hands, resting my head upon my knees. "Please stop." I whimpered, my body trembling.

I just wanted to escape into the depths of sleep. Why did my mind have to torment me like this? Everything had been going so well. Why did these visions have to ruin everything? Why couldn't I just have a few days in peace without thinking about the terror that would soon lay siege to Hyrule?

"Zelda?" Link called, his voice slicing through my thoughts.

Stupid. I catechized myself. I hadn't meant to disturb Link.

Pausing for a moment to make sure my voice wouldn't betray me, I replied, "Sorry."

"You ok?" He asked. I could hear him shifting on the ground below me.

I nodded, still clutching my head in my hands. "Yeah, just having trouble falling asleep." My voice cracked at the end, giving me away. I froze, hoping Link would brush it aside. But he knew me too well. He could tell something was wrong. That's why seconds later, I felt the bed move, and a hand went to my back, making me lift my head up.

And there Link was, sitting next to me, gently rubbing my back, his face illuminated by the moonlight. His eyebrows creased as he saw my face, worry flashing across his countenance. "You're crying."

Was I? I hadn't even noticed. I looked away, trying to hide my face. "Sorry. I'm alright." I whispered.

"Zelda, what's wrong?" Link persisted, his voice very worried now.

I shook my head, the words stuck in my throat. What did I say? How could I explain to him the horrible things I saw? Hylia's warnings to me? It all just felt like too much.

"Hey." Link called, combing back my hair from my face. He scooted closer to me, his arm wrapping around my back, while the other held my hair back. "I'm here."

It was a simple statement. But as soon as he said it, I broke. The strong façade I had up came crumbling down. Tears pooled from my eyes, and I wiped them away fruitlessly. Leaning into Link, his arms wrapped around me, holding me in a tight embrace. I clung to him, as if he was the only thing holding me together, otherwise I'd be lost. He held me tightly, pulling us back, so we were laying on the bed. I curled into a tight ball, Link's arms wrapped around my back and shoulders.

Through the tears, I finally whispered, "I had another vision."

Link paused, "This morning?" I nodded against him. "You should have told me." He said.

"I'm sorry." I croaked out between the tears. "I didn't want to worry you. I didn't want to be a burden."

"Zelda, you're not a burden." Link soothed, "Next time it happens, please tell me."

"Ok." I said in a small voice.

Link paused for a moment, rubbing my back to help calm me. "Zelda... What did you see?"

I shook my head, the images once more flashing through my mind. "Horrible things."

"Like at the Spring of Power?" Link asked, recalling my disheveled state back then. I had never told him what I had seen.

"Yeah." I whispered, barely audible.

"Can you tell me?" Link asked sincerely.

I bit my lip, not sure what to even say. "I see awful things that have yet to happen. I see Hyrule in a state of chaos and... people... People that I care about - slaughtered. And in each one Hylia keeps telling me this is Hyrule's fate if I can't awaken my powers. I just... I feel like everything is dependent upon me. If I can't awaken my powers in time, that's what's going to happen. And it will be all my fault." I said, the words tumbling from my mouth, a torrent of noise.

Link didn't reply right away, making me feel as if I had shared too much. "I'm sorry." I whispered against his chest, ready for him to get up and leave. Why would he stay? Why would anyone stay?

Yet instead of that, Link only held me tighter. "Why are you sorry?" He whispered next to me. "I'm sorry, Zelda. That you've had to endure this on your own. I don't know why Hylia is showing you those things, and I'm sure it can't be easy. But I'm here to help in whatever way I can. So please, tell me when something is bothering you. You don't have to bottle it all in. Even if you don't want to talk to me about it, you've got Impa, Urbosa, Daruk, even Revali."

I clung to Link tighter, wondering for the hundredth time if I really deserved someone as understanding and caring as Link. He was like the sun, soft and glowing, warming even the darkest parts of me.

"I just..." I trailed off, not sure how to even explain it.

"What?" Link coaxed.

I shook my head. "I know I have people around me that care. That would move mountains to help me... but when things get... bad... It suddenly feels like I'm all alone. That I'd just be a burden and need to endure on my own."

I felt Link nod his head, "Like now?"

"Yeah." I replied.

"I understand that. When I first got the Master Sword, well I told you... I withdrew more. I stopped sharing my hardships and handled them on my own. But then you reminded me that I don't have to do that. You said you would share my burdens, so anytime you have those thoughts, think of that and know that I will share yours too."

I nodded, feeling better, Link's warmth soothing me. His presence seemed to chase away the vile images that tormented me, and I finally felt the fatigue of sleep heavy on my eyelids. "Thanks, Link. I'll remember that."

"Good." Link squeezed me once more. "I suppose I should let you get some rest?" Link asked, his voice uncertain.

In response I held on tighter and shook my head. "Stay." I said, not wanting him to leave. Link made me feel safe, as if he could chase away all the bad things.

"Say no more." Link said, a smile in his voice. Link released me briefly to pull the covers over us fully, wrapping us in a cocoon.

I curled in to him, feeling content. Although the visions were still there, in the back of my mind, I could push them aside so they didn't consume me. Instead I closed my eyes, the void of sleep pulling at me. Nestled next to Link, I finally sank into the depths of oblivion.

"Zelda." I heard Link's voice called my name from far off. Groggily I groaned, consciousness slowly returning to me. Before I even opened my eyes, I remembered where I was: in Link's bed, sleeping next to him. I could feel his body next to mine, and in response, I tightened my hold on him. Link chuckled, "Zelda, I have to get up."

I shook my head, "No. It's too early."

"That's what you said last time." Link replied. I cracked my eyes open, Link's bare chest in front of me, his chin resting on my head.

"Last time?"

"Too early for you to remember?" Link inquired, a teasing tone in his voice. I pulled away a little to look Link in the eyes. Seeing the question in my eyes, Link expounded, "I got up around dawn, but you didn't seem to be fond of the idea. So I slept in a little longer."

I frowned, "It's still early." I said, glancing outside.

Link arched an eyebrow, "I need to make breakfast."

I buried my head against Link's chest once more, "It can't wait?"

Link chuckled, amused by my behavior. "I promise one day we'll sleep in for as long as you want."

I paused, considering his proposition. "Promise?"

"You have my words as a knight."

I pulled away and looked up at him once more. "Fine. I shall release you." With that I unwove my hands from around Link, freeing him from my grip. But Link didn't get up right away. Instead his blue eyes observed me for a minute.

"How do you feel?" He asked, concern twinkling in his eyes. His regards for my well being made my heart flutter.

"I feel better." I answered, feeling a little embarrassed about my breakdown last night. "Sorry."

Link tucked a stray lock of my hair behind my ear, "Don't be. I'm just glad you feel better." He leaned in briefly and placed a soft kiss on my forehead, surprising me. I wasn't used to the affectionate, but it did make me feel a tingling sensation.

With that, Link climbed out of bed, grabbing a navy shirt that he pulled on. I sat up in bed, yawning. "You can sleep in longer, Zee." Link told me.

"It's alright, I mine as well get up." I replied. "I can help you with breakfast too."

Link grinned, "That would be great. I'll be in the kitchen when you're ready." With that Link left. I smiled then, a hand going to my chest. Link really was wonderful. I wasn't sure I deserved someone like Link, but I wanted to become someone that did. He saw me, all the rugged edges, all the tarnish, all the imperfections, and he still decided he wanted to walk this journey with me. Perhaps there were things about myself that I didn't see as clearly as he did, but I would try to. I would try to be the best version of myself I could. I wasn't sure if I could do that on my own, but Link was right. I had people around me I could talk to. I just had to remember that!

I wasn't sure what the journey ahead would entail, but I vowed I would grow; that I would heal and become better. Because I respected and valued the opinions of all those close to me: Ubrosa, Daruk, Impa, Falnore, Purah, Revali, Link... And all of them saw something in me, something that made them want to follow and support me. I had to work on seeing it too. But it must have been there; that was the logical explanation.

With that thought in mind, I changed into the outfit I wore yesterday, which was a simple pair of black pants with brown boots and a light blue top. I walked out of Link's room, closing the door behind me. As expected, Link was already in the kitchen, gathering ingredients together.

"My father made tea." Link said, noticing me enter the kitchen. I grabbed the mug of tea Link pointed too and took a small sip.

"What would you like me to do?" I inquired.

"Actually, I think I got it covered." He replied as he started to chop several mushrooms. "This won't take long." And just as Link had said, he was done chopping the ingredients in minutes. He began to cook the omelets, the aroma filling the air. I waited as Link kept busy in the kitchen, sipping my tea and admiring the view from the window. It looked like it was going to be a nice day.

Before long, Link's father walked into the kitchen and sat down across from me, "Good morning, Zelda." He said, an easy smile on his face. "You certainly have a nice steed out there. Just as fine as Epona."

"Oh, thank you." I said, almost forgetting about the horses.

"A part of my morning routine is taking care of ol' Thunder, so I saw to Link and your horse as well."

"I appreciate that, Damek." I said, the two of us falling into easy conversation. As we conversed, Aryll and Saoirse came walking in, old and worn clothes on, their hair tied back. They had splotches of dirt on their hands and face, signs they had been busy at work.

"How's work?" Damek asked.

"I'm learning all sorts of cool things!" Aryll said, "Did you know infusing metal with dragon scales can give the weapon a piece of that dragon's power?"

Damek raised his eyebrows, "Couldn't say I did."

"Well if you do it right, you could have a blade that shoots lightning!" Aryll said excitedly.

"I wouldn't say it shoots lightning." Saoirse mused, "More like it just has a special spark to it."

"Yeah, lightning." Aryll said.

"Breakfast is ready." Link said, placing a plate in front of me and Damek.

"Great!" Aryll cheered, "I'm starving."

"First we need to clean off." Saoirse advised, nudging Aryll towards the bathroom.

Aryll huffed, but begrudgingly headed for the bathroom. Link quickly finished setting the table, five plates with golden omelets on them. Minutes later Aryall and Saoirse took their seats, across from Link and I.

"So what's the plan today, Birthday Girl?" Damek asked his daughter.

Aryll pondered the question as she chewed, "Fishing?" She finally asked hopefully.

Damek nodded, "Anything else?"

"Game night?" Aryll asked again, her voice eager.

"Indeed, I have a score to settle." Damek grinned at his daughter. Watching them interact made my heart ache a little. Why couldn't my father and I be like that? Why couldn't we joke and laugh together? Why couldn't we do fun things together? How had things gotten to the point they were now? Surely there must have been something either of us could have done? Could still do? No, I doubted that. Perhaps by some miracle we could mend out relationship, but it would never be like Aryll and Damek's. Not anymore. Maybe in a different lifetime... but in this one, after mother had passed, we just couldn't be what the other needed... and now here we were, strangers that shared blood.

"Alright then!" Damek called, grabbing my attention. "Fishing trip to the Squabble River after breakfast." Aryll cheered in response, fully ready to enjoy her day.

When breakfast was over, I helped Link clean up while Saoirse and Aryll finished up in the forge and Damek readied supplies. Once all that was done, we met at the front of the house. Saoirse had a picnic basket along, likely filled with snacks. Damek carried a few collapsible fishing rods in his hands, while Link carried the rest.

The five of us enjoyed a nice walk to the Squabble River and found a quiet shore a little ways away from the main road. Damek handed Aryll a fishing rod and she quickly baited it, ready to catch a fish. Link handed me a fishing rod, "I take it you've been fishing before."

"A few times." I admitted, recalling several times fishing with Master Falnore while I was training.

"Good." Link said, grinning. "You can use mom's pole since she's just going to read." I glanced over to see Saoirse setting out a blanket, a book resting on top of the picnic basket.

Link and I joined Damek and Aryll on the river banks, casting our lines into the river and slowly reeling them in, waiting for a fish to strike.

Fishing with Link's family was much more relaxing than the few times I had fished with Falnore. He had always grown impatient with me, as all he had to do was fly overhead and pluck a fish from the water. Whereas I had to wait for the fish to come to me.

The five of us spent the afternoon fishing on the river bank, and it was more fun than I expected. Damek told stories about his days as a knight, which I found fascinating, and Aryll always jumped for joy whenever she had a fish on the line. I even caught a few fish. And when I wanted a break from fishing, I took off my shoes and waded into the water, enjoying the day and the people I was with.

Finally when the sun began to grow low in the West, we headed back to Deya Village, bringing five plump Hylian Bass - gutted and scaled - back with us for dinner. As we walke, Link and I hung back a few paces. "Probably not your typical day." Link said, his eyes on me.

"I had fun." I replied, and took a deep breath. "I really like your family, Link."

Even though I wasn't looking at him, I knew Link had a big grin on his face. "You fit right in." He said.

"This was nice." I continued, "Getting away from everything... if only for a little while."

"Yeah." Link agreed. Biting my lip, I glanced over at Link, feeling a little nervous. Before I could change my mind, I reached my hand out for his. His hand instantly encircled mine and I felt my heart race for a second. I wasn't sure why he still made me so nervous!

Hand in hand we walked. In that moment, I couldn't help but feel as if Link and I were just two ordinary people that could spend the afternoon fishing. Two civilians that didn't have the fate of all Hyrule riding on their shoulders. It was a nice thought... one that I would enjoy for the fleeting moments it lasted.

As we walked through Deya Village, Link and I hurried to catch up to the others, letting go of each other's hands. When we got back into the house, Saoirse instantly got to work in the kitchen, while Link, Aryll, Damek, and I enjoyed some tea around the fire and played a round of cards.

Once dinner was served, we all feasted upon a meal of fish, roasted vegetables, rolls, and cake for dessert. We finished the night out with more cards, Damek winning the final round, much to Aryll and I's dismay.

"You two almost had me!" Damek laughed, pleased with his win over Aryll and I. "I hope you had a nice birthday, Aryll."

"Yes, Happy Birthday!" I said. Then an idea came to my mind and I abruptly stood up. "One moment, I want to get something really quick." Rushing back to Link's room, I pulled out the Slate from my backpack, then hurried back to the living room.

As I entered, I held the Slate up, "I thought it might be nice to take a picture."

"A picture?" Aryll asked, eyeing the device in my hand with curiosity.

I nodded and quickly explained how the Slate could take these snapshots in time. Deciding to give it a try, the family all gathered round and I snapped a picture. I turned the Slate around and showed it to them, Aryll, Damek, and Saorise all impressed.

"Can I take one?" Aryll asked,

"Sure." I said and handed the Slate to her. "Just tap this icon when you want to capture a shot."

Aryll grinned, "Link, come here. Stand by Zelda." Link obeyed and stood next to me, his hand casually snaking around my lower back. "Nice!" Aryll said, "Now big smiles!"

Link and I grinned, our shoulders brushing "Perfect!" Aryll said, running over to show us the picture. Aryll then showed Damek and Saoirse.

"Alright, Aryll. Give it back to Zelda and then bed." Her mother said.

Aryll rolled her eyes. "Fine."

She handed the Slate back to me and hurried off to her room.

"Are you guys heading out tomorrow?" Damek asked, his eyes settling on Link and me.

"Yeah." Link answered.

"Well it was a pleasure having you here. And it was so nice meeting you, Zelda." Saoirse said. "I do hope you join us again."

I nodded, "I would really like that. I thank you so much for welcoming me into your home."

"Don't mention it." Damek chuckled, "Besides, one day you might be part of the family."

My eyes widened, a blush instantly going to my face. "Damek!" Saorise nudged her husband in the shoulder with her elbow. "Don't embarrass them."

"What?" Damek replied, grinning, "Isn't that a part of my parental duties? To embarrass my children?"

Saoirse sighed, "Don't pay him any mind. We were delighted to have you here, Zelda. Please feel free to come back anytime."

"Thanks." I said. I hoped Link and I would.

However, fate had other plans.

This chapter ended up being longer than originally planned. I just really like writing Link's family. So I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter.

Also, in this chapter I was trying to convey more of Zelda's mental state. She's definitely has her ups and downs, but that self doubt and depression is always there, just sometimes not as present. I know people experience depression differently, so I've only been portraying it how I experience it. To me it's like a shadow. It's always there, but when you're surrounded by supportive people and having fun, it's diluted; it's like you're out in the sun and that shadow is a tiny dot. But when you're alone, it can consume you. It's like the dead of night and that shadow becomes everything. During the day, you know you have people around that care and would help you, but at night, you can't see that. You feel utterly alone and the monster that is your mine takes control and isolates you. You could literally have someone right next to you, yet you can't call out to them. You have to fight this battle in silence. I hope I was able to convey that well in this chapter. And for those that are fighting a silent battle, I hope this story has helped you in some way and know that I understand what its like. It does become more manageable. So please, don't be afraid to reach out and get help; because you're not alone.

Anyways, thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and we are getting close to the end. I think (if all goes to plan) there will be about 10 more chapters until this first story is wrapped up. It's crazy to think that I'm that close to finishing this! My updates might be a little sporadic in the next month or so because of the holidays, but I will be consistently working on this. Again, editing is the rate limiting step for me. So please bear with me! And thank you all so much :)
