Queasy
During 2 x 8
Sybil's stomach felt queasy as she thought about her mother, still feverish and coughing, and Tom ready to leave for Dublin today.
She'd known from the moment Tom suggested marriage, that she would be forced to choose between her family and the man she loved. She'd thought she'd accepted that when she'd decided to elope. And again, when she stood firm against Papa as he tried to forbid Sybil from following her heart.
But today was so much harder. Although Dr. Clarkson said Mama should survive as she'd lived through last night, she was still poorly. And Sybil was the only nurse in the family.
But Sybil couldn't allow Tom to leave without seeing him. So, she hurried to Grantham Arms, her stomach still queasy.
"Hello Tom," she said after he came to his door. "I had to say goodbye." With that, she gave him a big kiss.
Tom grinned as they withdrew. "I'm not leaving Sybil. Not yet, anyway."
"But your interview for the paper!" Sybil said, shaking her head.
"You need me here, Sybil; your mother is still sick, and Lavinia's funeral is approaching. I'm certain the newspaper will understand."
Sybil kissed him again, loving the sacrifice he was making for her.
