The reception hall was packed with the friends and family of the bride and groom. Sara was accepting congratulations from the various people that were mingling around. Then her eyes fixated on a lone figure in an alcove. Picking up a couple of glasses of wine, Sara made her way through the crowd toward the man sitting alone.
"Hey, Griss," Sara said cheerfully, "want some company?" She handed him one of the glasses and sat down across from him.
Grissom thanked her for the wine, then added with a smirk, "After today, do I have a say in whether or not I want your company?"
A smile blossomed on Sara's face. "Nope. Like it or not, we're stuck together for the rest of our lives. Till death do us part."
"I was afraid of that," Grissom playfully replied.
Sara took a sip of her wine, then suggested teasingly, "It's not too late for an annulment."
Shaking his head, Grissom said, "I wouldn't dream of it. Not after what we've been through today." He grinned at Sara. "Besides, there would be some very disappointed people if we suggested that."
Sara laughed and agreed. "Yes, there would. Sofia would have a fit since she planned all this. I swear she missed her calling."
Grissom nodded. "She did do a wonderful job. Everything is perfect."
Sara's tone became serious. "You know, earlier, I was thinking about us." She paused when Grissom gave her a slightly confused look. Despite some foolish efforts by Sara , there had never been anything more than friendship between them. They had definitely never been an "us". She explained herself more clearly. "When we were working with each other, I believed at the time that we were destined to be together. Why else would you have called me out to Las Vegas?"
Smiling, Sara continued, "Don't misunderstand me, Grissom. I'm glad I came. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met and married Nick." She looked down at the wedding ring that she had been wearing for the past 24 years. "It just wasn't mean to be for Grissom and Sidle," she said without any trace of remorse.
Grissom turned in his chair to look at the bride and groom. He had been thrilled when his daughter became engaged to Sara's nephew. He knew the young man would love and cherish his little girl just as much as he loved and cherished her mother, Sofia. Then he turned back to Sara.
"It was meant for a Grissom and a Sidle to get together, Sara," Grissom said. "It just wasn't time yet."
