Chapter 1
Summer Holiday
The sun was rising, casting a pink light over the neat row of houses on Privet Drive. From the highway came the distant rumble of cars and trucks bringing their owners to work.
Inside number four Privet Drive, everything was peaceful because it was sleeping, and the occupants were sleeping in.
In an upstairs bedroom, a young boy with messy black hair and startling green eyes lay sleeping on his bed. Harry Potter was peacefully dreaming while faint sounds drifted through
the cracked window. Sometimes his dreams were the only place Harry Potter found sanctuary from the daily troubles of his life. Ever since Albus Dumbledore died, Harry's life
had been hectic and dangerous. At this moment, ten days before his seventeenth birthday, Harry was safe from harm at his Aunt and Uncle's house. But only for ten more days.
Suddenly, there was a sharp rap at Harry's window. Harry slowly and groggily stood up and went to the window. He opened it up to let his snowy-white owl, Hedwig, into his
bedroom.
"Mornin', Hedwig"
She hooted softly at him and held out her leg for him to take the letter attached to it. Harry recognized Ron's messy handwriting at once. He tore off the envelope and read:
Harry,
How are you? I hope the muggles are treating you right. Bill and Fleur want me to invite you to their wedding. It's the day before your birthday. Also mum wants to have a birthday
party for you the next day, on your birthday. And dad says your apparition test can happen anytime after your birthday. Whenever we are available he can take both of us. If it's
alright with you aunt and uncle, we are going to pick you up at noon today (by car.) Send your response back ASAP.
-Ron
Harry didn't even bother to ask his aunt and uncle first but wrote a quick response to Ron saying he could come. He tied the parchment to Hedwig's leg and she flew out the
window.
"You'd better hurry downstairs or you won't get any breakfast!" yelled Uncle Vernon from the bottom of the stairs.
Harry had not realized what time it was. He sprinted downstairs and into his place at the table. Harry was dismayed at the sight he saw at the kitchen table. His breakfast was a
mere half an apple. Dudley was still on his diet because he hadn't managed to lose any weight.
Harry knew why this was. As soon as each meal was over, Dudley would take his car over to the nearest convenient store and pig out on doughnuts and pizza. For Dudley's
sixteenth birthday, he had received a shiny, silver corvette from his parents. He had already received two speeding tickets.
As soon as he was done with his breakfast, which didn't take very long, Harry told Uncle Vernon that the Weasleys would be arriving at noon to pick him up. Uncle Vernon just
grunted as a response. Harry went upstairs to pack his school supplies and wait for the Weasleys to arrive.
