Chapter 1
The Simple Bet
When James and I died we left behind our son; not because we didn't care about him, but because we loved him so much. Here from heaven we get to watch him grow every day. We see how my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew treat him, we see him making friends, we see him fighting so hard to live and fight and help other people live.
Our story starts the day we died, but the story we are going to tell starts on Harry's first day of Hogwarts; a magical school of witchcraft and wizardry. That first day two girls came into Harry's life, one who entered this day for a split second and one who changed his life the first second she walked into his compartment. The first was Ginny Weasley. The second was Hermione Granger.
One thing a person must know about heaven is that the people in heaven cannot change or give advice to the people on earth. We can reach out and if we try hard enough, show our presence to our loved ones, but we can't physically talk and touch. The second thing is that we look at a picture as though we are in it, but we can see all perspectives of the people in the picture. We can feel every emotion and hear every thought, but we can only follow one person around at a time. So that first day and for the first three following years James and I decided to follow Harry around, stopping briefly on Hermione or Ron's family, but mostly focusing only on Harry.
We had seen Ginny in the picture for two seconds standing with Ron's mum complaining about not being able to go to school. James and I never thought twice about her until a year later when Harry, Ron, and Hermione were best friends and Ginny had started her first year. That year was the year James and I started our bet.
The bet was simple we each chose one girl Harry was one day going to fall in love with (we both hoped it wouldn't be until he was twenty-- we had all the time in the world and he was still only a baby) and whoever won got whatever they wanted. James and I decided that since we could get anything we wanted in heaven we were going to make it harder. We could never have that thing until one of us won. For example, if I wanted a root beer float I couldn't have one unless I won the bet, which for all we knew at the time could have been ten years down the road or never. I chose Hermione and James chose Ginny. We argued for a while on our choices, but ultimately settled on them. Then we waited.
