Mondays weren't fun.

Especially Mondays after working eighteen hour days for the past week and rarely seeing Makayla or sleeping only an hour or two a night.

Makayla was anything but a morning person and waking her up wasn't for the weak or faint of heart.

She'd been struggling a bit so Kim would be going in late, and was taking Mack out for breakfast before school.

Needless to say the current bout of nausea wasn't fun, though it did give her tiny glimmer of hope she had to push through it and get moving.

She showered and dressed before going to wake Mack up, she knocked on the door twice before opening it. They always knocked before entering they felt it was important that they respected Mack's personal space and one way they could do that was knock before entering.

Mack's eyes flew open at the sound of Kim's voice and the gentle feeling of her hand as it rubbed her cheek, "mommy, you're home!"

"I am." She welcomed the hug, it was heavenly "I've missed you."

"Is daddy here too?" Mack asked.

"He's not. He had to go in earlier this morning." Kim hated this aspect of their job but was thankful to Voight for working with them and allowing them to come in late if need be and to leave early whenever they could.

In an effort to not take advantage she and Adam often took turns on who would get to duck out early, but more often than not it was Kim who left.

"I thought we could grab breakfast from the diner before school, how does that sound?" Kim really didn't need to ask her, she already knew that Mack would be over the moon.

"Best day ever!"

Within no time they were at their favorite diner just a few blocks from their house, the staff knew them by name and treated them like family. It had been there go to spot during their remodel and they made weekend breakfast trips a bit of a tradition.

Mack always ordered French toast with bacon, Kim and Adam's order always changed but Makayla's stayed the same. Regardless of the time of day.

This morning Kim kept it light, she ordered a toasted bagel with cream cheese and it was a struggle to finish it.

Makayla questioned her, "Mommy, you're not eating your food, does your tummy hurt?" She was an observant kid, "do you think you need to poop?"

Kim laughed at the question, it was something they often asked Makayla. "No sweetie. I'm just not that hungry."

"Okay, but you should try a couple of bites. You'll be hungry later and a little sad that you didn't eat when you had the chance." She threw yet another one of the lines they often said to Mack at her.

"I packed a lunch for later." Kim assured her.

"Mommy?" Makayla called out from the back seat, "Do we have time to see daddy at work? I really miss him. I want to hug him. I think he would like that too."

Kim glanced at the clock, they really didn't have the time but she knew Mack needed to see Adam but more importantly Adam needed to see her. The case they were working involved children and it was rough on all of them.

"We absolutely have time and I think your daddy would love to see you. I'm sure Uncle Kevin would like a hug too."

"What about Mr.Hank?" Mack asked.

"Mr.Hank too." Kim smiled, "They would all love to see you."

Makayla was a familiar face around the 21st, she was a bright spot in what was often a dark place, she gave out high fives to a few patrol officers before spotting Platt, whom she affectionately referred to as 'Auntie'

"Auntie!" Mack broke free of Kim's grip, "I missed you!" No one knew why Mack had chosen to call her 'Auntie' but it stuck and was down right adorable.

"Oh, sweetheart I have missed you so." Platt hugged her, "Have you grown another inch again?" She asked as her, "Would you like some candy?"

"Yes. Please." Mack replied, "Is my daddy here or in the field?"

It was always comical to hear Mack using police terminology they used, she often told her classmates her parents were 'on the job', referred to the bad guys as perps, and persons of interest.

"Lucky for you he's upstairs!"

Makayla grabbed Kim's hand and dragged her to the palm reader, "Hurry up mom, let's go!"

Kevin heard them first, he quickly spun their board around to keep Makayla from seeing the photos related to their case.

"Ruze, your girls are here," he called down the hallway, Adam had left for the vending machine.

"Uncle Kevin!" Makayla grinned ready to greet him with their handshake. It had taken them weeks to perfect it but it was an absolute joy to watch.

They appreciated the role Kevin played in their daughter's life, they felt it important that she had a strong African American male influence In her life and Kevin fit the bill perfectly. Kevin's sister Vinessa had also become close with Mack, she didn't see her as often as she would've liked but made it a point to visit whenever she was in town.

Kim and Adam were blessed with a very supportive village.

Kim headed for the vending machine, "Do you really need those cookies?" She teased Adam, his head snapped up and he smiled.

"Yes. I do." Adam stole a quick kiss and gave her hand a squeeze, "How did drop off go?" He used his teeth to open the bag of cookies, he offered one to Kim before popping one in his mouth, "I miss our kid. I hope you hugged her for me."

"Nope." Kim told him, "I figured I would let you do that. She's with Kevin. She asked if she could see you, told me she misses you. I had to bring her in."

"Thank you." Adam hugged his wife.

"Daddy!" Mack was sitting at his desk when he and Kim returned from the break room, "Oh, I'm so happy to see you.' She threw herself at him.

"You are a sight for sore eyes, my girl." He kissed the top of her head, "Mom said she took you out for breakfast that was a fun surprise, wasn't it? I'm a bit jealous though."

"It was fun. I got French toast and bacon." Makayla sat on his desk, "it was super good, the bacon was crispy just like how we like it."

"Sounds amazing."

Makayla continued to rattle on, "mommy ordered a bagel but she didn't eat it, she said she wasn't feeling that good."

"Oh yeah?" Adam glanced up at Kim, she shook her head and waved him off. He knew better than to question her at work, he did feel a bit of excitement build in his gut.

"I told her she was gonna be hungry later but she didn't listen to me." Mack hung her head disappointedly.

"I hate to break it to you but it's time to go sweet girl, you need to get to school." Kim held her hand out to her, "tell Uncle Kevin bye."

"I'll walk you out." Adam told her.

It was another long day and it was well after ten when Adam was able to head home, they had found their guy and he had already been booked and was currently en route to Cook County Correctional facility.

Kim had clocked out hours ago and had dodged his every attempt to to ask her how she was feeling and if she thought she might be pregnant.

He decided to stop at the pharmacy and pick up a pregnancy test, they had run through a few of them already and they had all been negative, he hoped this time would be different.

Adam wasn't particularly concerned about Kim's ability to become pregnant but he could see the concern starting to build in Kim.

Kim was curled up on the couch, the television playing some cheesy lifetime movie, she could see the flash of headlights on the wall as Adam's Jeep pulled into the driveway. She knew they were finally about to have the conversation she'd been dodging all day.

Was she pregnant? She wasn't sure, her period was late by just over a week. It wasn't unusual for her to be a little late, but a small part of her was hopeful.

She didn't feel great, she had felt queasy most of the day and she was exhausted but did that mean she was pregnant? Sure the symptoms could definitely be related to a pregnancy but it could also be a dozen other things.

She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't hear Adam come in, he stood in the entryway of the living room and watched her. He could see the wheels turning and the look of worry in her eyes.

"Darlin'?" Adam spoke softly, the bag from the pharmacy dangling from his wrist, "I think you should take this."

Kim sighed, "I'm not pregnant, Adam." She wasn't about to get her hopes up, "I think I've picked up a bug of some kind. Or maybe it's just exhaustion."

Adam joined her on the couch, "Maybe." He placed the bag in her lap, "I still think you should take it. Just so we know.." he watched her like a hawk she was staring at the bag, "and won't spend the next few days wondering." He leaned back against the couch, closing his eyes briefly, "plus I know Aunt Flo hasn't arrived yet." He opened his eyes and turned his head to face her.

"You keeping track of my period now?" Kim asked him.

"I notice things, and I've noticed that she hasn't shown up yet." Adam reasoned.

"You notice things, huh?" Kim changed positions on the couch so she could look him head on, "I see. Except you don't notice when the trash needs to be taken out, and you certainly don't notice the laundry hamper in our bathroom"

Adam shrugged, "Kim, this is different. It's operation knocked up, I need to know these things, they're vital to our success." He smirked.

She just looked at him and smiled, she absolutely adored him, he drove her batshit crazy some days but he was the only one she'd want to do life with. She kissed him quickly before standing up, he was right. She wasn't about to admit that to him though, she opened the bag and peered at the test for a few seconds before relenting. "Okay, I will take it."

Adam scarfed down a couple of slices of cold pizza while they waited for the rest to process, it only took a few minutes but felt like a lifetime.

Kim was stunned into silence, "What?" Adam asked her, "What does it say?"

"I'm pregnant. It's says I'm pregnant." Kim burst into tears and Adam flew at her and scooped her up in his arms."

"Fuck yes!"
