Once Upon a December
Chapter One
Prologue
December. Some people despise the last month of the year, cold dark nights and bitterly chilly days. Others embrace it, finding the sparkling ice of the morning dew as well as the dancing snowfalls spectacular. Hermione Granger happened to be one of those embracing the cold. To her, December was a time of comfort; solace.
While she sat on the balcony of her head girl dorm, snowflakes resting on her auburn curls, she twirled her mother's ring unconsciously around her finger. Hermione had very little memories of her parent. In fact, other than the smell of lilies, ocean spray, and peppermint, Hermione could barely remember anything. She knew her mother never went anywhere without a lily in her hair and a peppermint in her mouth, and that her father constantly was out on his yacht relaxing to the gentle rocking of the waves. Those were simple traits she had picked up from them. Hermione currently had peppermints littering her school bag and a tiger lily tucked behind her ear. Her favorite place was in water, and almost every morning she would go a swim in the lake.
However, with lilies and oceans, many people would think this 7th year student would prefer summer. If truth be told, Hermione often wondered the same thing. But then the song would come back to her, and she would be left with no doubt that she loved December above all other months.
Every night, before Hermione fell asleep, her mother used sing her the song from the Disney movie Anastasia, explaining that she and her best friend had always imagined that they were princesses, but didn't yet know it, just like Anastasia. The story enthralled Hermione, and ever since then, whenever she would become discouraged or felt helpless, she would sing the song to herself, loving most the line 'Figures dancing gracefully, across my memory,' for it explained perfectly her situation. She could never place a face, but whenever she dreamed about the days when she was younger, she saw women's gowns flowing freely and men guiding them gently.
Hermione shook herself out of her reverie, and swiftly got up, pulling her cloak closer around her. She went inside, closing the door, and fell asleep on her bed, unknowingly listening to someone hum her lullaby.
