I do not own Harry Potter, only the OC
Hello guys, Badger here. Another small chapter for this collection. It's nice to see a few people seem to enjoy this series so far. If I'm being honest, I wasn't completely sure what I was doing with this chapter. I just wanted to make a chapter based around a question that's been on my mind for some time. Besides from that, I had no idea where this was going, but I think you'll enjoy it.
Chapter 4
Daphne huffed as she entered the building, carrying bags of shopping. She still didn't understand how those Muggle contraptions works and she still didn't understand how a 'debit card' worked either. Sometimes she wondered why she wanted to see what it was like to experience how the Muggle world works. Entering the dining area, she saw Harry sitting at the table, a mug of tea in his hands.
"Oh hey Harry" Daphne said, placing the bags down on a nearby counter and removed her wand "Do you mind helping me put this away"
Harry didn't respond, he just sat at the table. Daphne raised an eyebrow and moved closer to him. Harry seemed to be staring off into space, completely oblivious to what was going on around him. Daphne waved a hand in front of his face, but he didn't even react or flinch. He just continued looking off into space. Daphne was now concerned. She was about to use her wand, to run a few diagnostic charms, however before she could do that, James walked in, his own mug of tea in his hands.
"Oh hey Daphne, you're back" James said
"James, what's wrong with Harry?" Daphne asked, gesturing to Harry, who still wasn't moving
"Ah, he's still sitting there huh?" James replied, a sheepish smile on his face
"Yes, what happened?" Daphne raised an eyebrow
"Well it's kind of my fault" James sighed, making Daphne give him a familiar glare and put her hands on her hips "I came downstairs and I asked Harry, what I believed to be, an simple, innocent question…I simply wondered how the inventor of the clock knew what the time was…I asked Harry and, well, you've seen the results of that question…he's been sat there for almost two hours now and he's either broken, or questioning life…probably both"
"You…asked him…how the inventor of the clock…knew what the time was?" Daphne asked slowly, trying to understand what was going on
"Yeah, I mean, the man invented the clock, but how did he know what time to set it too?" James shrugged, sipping some tea "Also, how did he know there were 24 hours in a day and how did he know that every hour was 60 minutes…what if there are actually more or less than 24 hours in a day…what if…"
"I'm begging you, please stop!" Daphne exclaimed, pointing her wand at James threateningly, making James raise his hands in a surrendering manner "You're making my head hurt…you're a son of a bitch, did you know that?"
"I don't know about that" James replied "From what I read in my fathers journals, my mother was many things…a bitch wasn't one of them"
"I hate you" Daphne sighed, as she began putting the shopping away "I sometimes wonder why we're friends"
"Please, you love me" James replied playfully "You won't admit it, but you know it's true"
"Shut up, before I test use a freezing spell in a very…delicate area" Daphne warned, her hand gripping her wand tightly
"Ok, I surrender" James said, making Daphne smirk to herself
"What is life?" Harry muttered, suddenly, making the two of them jump "What do we truly know about life?"
"Okay Harry, let's get you out of here" James said, helping Harry stand up and placing an arm around his shoulders "In fact, I believe there is a small pub in the nearby town, let's go there, it will help take your mind off of things"
Daphne couldn't help but roll her eyes, as the two left. James was right, she loved the two of them, though she would never admit it. She dreaded to think where the two of them would be today, without her. True, James was smart, but even he could be a bit reckless and goofy. The two would probably be dead in a ditch, without her, sooner or later.
…
So how was that?
I'm not sure about you but, ever since I saw a youtube ad where the first words were "How did the inventor of the clock know what the time was?", it has been in the back of my mind and it's been bothering me.
After taking some much-needed rest after the new chapter of Ace and Lightning, I started writing up drafts for chapters on other stories. A few things I like and might use, others not so much and need to be changed before I start the final version. I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next time, in whatever story you read next.
