Arianna Tucker steered her dad's small white motorboat quickly towards shore. It seemed impossible that just a few days ago she had been attending classes in her sophomore year at NYU. Now, on Christmas break, Arianna was visiting her dad's Brazilian mansion, located just north of Salvador. She was not in a good mood. Her parents had divorced ten years ago, and Arianna still blamed her dad and his mistress (now his wife) for ending the marriage. However, after her mom's death two years ago, she was left with nowhere else to turn. She had stayed at her boarding school in Chicago for the rest of her senior year, but had been forced to endure one disastrous summer with her dad and stepmother. Now she stayed at NYU as much as possible, working summers and breaks. This year, her dad had specifically requested her presence for Christmas. Arriving jet-lagged late the night before, Arianna had awoken late to an empty house. Since her dad was at work, she had decided to take out his boat, The Stingray. Now, still nearly 5 miles from shore, Arianna hurried towards home. A storm that had come seemingly out of nowhere was now approaching fast. Already dark clouds were rolling in to cover the sun, the wind was picking up, and the waves were becoming choppy. Abruptly, the sky opened up and rain came down in sheets. Suddenly, Arianna became worried. She looked around for a lifejacket, realizing with a burst of regret that they were all back at the dock Struggling to remain in control of the small craft, Arianna shivered. A flash of lightning illuminated the marina. A breath she hadn't even realized she was holding blew out of her all at once. Then, disaster struck. The boat struck a rock and nearly flipped, sending Arianna flying into the icy black water.
