Kate now 4.5 months pregnant.

It was a little more than a month after the Castle learned about Kate's pregnancy and things have been... different. For the first week, he stayed at Kate's as she was off duty from work due to doctor's orders. Things were a little weird but he couldn't help but be happy to be so close to her. It was a good kind of weird.

Kate on the other hand was torn between her feelings for Castle and her thoughts about the complexity of the situation they are now in. She wanted to be close to him but at the same time she felt that she could not impose on him. It seemed he enjoyed being there, helping her, keeping her comfortable but it could just be his selfless, compassionate, loving self helping her out.

After her week off, the doctor confirmed that everything was perfect with her and the baby, so she went back to work. Of course she had to notify Montgomery and as a result she was put on desk duty. Even though that wasn't something that she liked, she knew that it was for her baby's safety, so there were no objections from her on this new arrangement.

Even though she didn't go to the crime scenes and was bound to her desk, Castle was at her side every day. Obviously this didn't allow him as much research opportunities and exciting experiences as before but it didn't really matter, did it? It had stopped being about research a long time ago and he knew that. Everybody knew that.

These days he usually picked her up in the mornings and they drove to the precinct together. Today he'd arrived a bit early so he was waiting in her living room for her to get dressed.

When she finally appeared at the door, she was smiling and had this surprised look on her face. "What?" he asked softly.

She came and stood right across from him. Putting her hand on her belly, she turned a bit to the side and said "Look, Castle". He was so pleasantly surprised when he saw her tiny baby bump. He couldn't come up with words, it was so fascinating and she was so beautiful looking down at her belly, and with the morning sunlight coming through the windows and creating a glow all around her.

"Wow" he said finally and she looked at him. He turned his eyes towards her face too. She was so beautiful, her eyes so expressive, so soft… They looked at each other for a moment, at a loss for words.

He was the one breaking the silence. "May I?" he asked, reaching towards her belly. She smiled and nodded subtly. When he touched her firm bump, he couldn't help but feel in awe. There was life growing in there and it was her baby. Kate's baby.

For a few seconds he had a vision in front of him. He could see it so clearly. It was a world in which Kate was his and he was hers. And this baby was his too. It was their baby and they were watching it grow big, waiting for the day they would meet it.

He would so want it to be the reality. And… And he realized, it could actually be the reality. Why not?

What if he told her how he felt and she felt the same way? Would it really matter if this baby wasn't biologically his? And at this exact moment, the answer felt like a "no". It really felt like a no.

He looked up and found her watching him and he couldn't help but raise a palm to her cheek and softly caress it for a few moments. She closed her eyes and let herself be in the moment, let herself feel his warmth, let herself dream of a world in which he is hers, in which they are a family, in which this is their baby. If only…

Their moment was disturbed by a call from Esposito and perhaps that was for the best for now. Unknown to each other, they both had things to process and to think about.
