Chapter 4.

The events in this chapter take place eight years later. Camille and Klaus are still together. They have been trying to have a child of their own for years but it hasn't just happened yet. Hope is now 10 years old, attending the Salvatore Boarding School that Caroline and Alaric had built together. The Salvatore Brothers were killed in a big battle that took place in Mystic Falls few years earlier. They had given the boarding house to Elena and Caroline because Damon loved Elena and Stefan felt quilty about the pain he had caused Caroline. Elena sold her part of the property to Alaric with a rather cheap price. Of course, Alaric's and Caroline's 9 year old twins attend the school as well and are best friends with Hope. Still, the tacit agreement is that although Klaus has a big part in funding the school, he isn't allowed to go to Mystic Falls. And although Hope attends the school, Caroline and Klaus have barely seen each other during that eight years.

Hope had a darkness in her. Although Freya had managed to quiet some of the symptoms, it was still evident that Hope wasn't the same child as before. She had a lot of strange mood swings, during which she would physically hurt the other members of the household. Freya and Camille had moved out for the time being. Hope hadn't attended school since she got infected which was two weeks ago.

"Hope, sweetheart, how are you feeling today?" Klaus asked his daughter.

"I'm fine, dad. Don't worry so much. It gives you wrinkles." Hope smiled.

"Of course, I worry, you are sick."

"I'm not sick. I'm infected by a dark magic dating back to two thousand years. If I don't get rid of it, I'll soon die or worse, became this city's worst nightmare."

"You are too smart for your own good."

"I know." Hope sighed.

With that Klaus left her room and went to talk to Freya and Vincent in the bell tower.

"Any developments? Please tell me you got something?"

"We got something, but it's a long shot." Freya said.

"Well, what is it? I'll try anything."

"Well, the best way to go about is to shift the infection from Hope to another person. And we have the perfect candidate for that: Aurora de Martel." Freya told Klaus.

"Aurora is fading away in the basement for all eternity. Wait, you want to give an evil vampire more evil power.?"

"Yes, and then kill her for good. Niklaus, I know you wanted her to suffer, but if it's between Hope's survival and you revenge, then the choice should be easy"

"Of course. So why did you say it was a long shot. It seems rather easy, doesn't it?"

"The problem is that Freya and I, we are not siphoners. We don't know anybody in New Orleans or in the world who are. Basically we need a witch from the Gemini coven but the last I heard, they were all killed during some wedding, so that's why it's pretty much impossible." Vincent explained.

"Maybe not. I have to go."

"Where are you going?" Freya asked her brother.

"To Mystic Falls." He answered turning to go.

"I thought you weren't allowed to go there."

"Well, she has to make an exception this time, doesn't she?."

When Klaus was gone. Vincent, confused, asked Freya who was so bold as to make rules for Klaus Mikealson."

"Caroline Forbes." Freya simply answered and shrugged.

"Hayley, pack your bags. Yours and Hope's. We'll do a little family trip. To Mystic Falls."

"What's in there? Besides Hope's school? And I thought you weren't allowed to go near it?"

"Hayley, please, trust me. I think I know a way to save Hope, but have to go now."

"Okay, I'll get Hope ready."

"Camille, sweetheart, what are you doing here?" Klaus asked Camille who he found in his bedroom.

"I got tired of waiting you in my apartment, so I came here."

"You know it's not safe for you here."

"Well I wanted to see you and Hayley said that Hope is having a good day." Camille sighed. "And I know you are having a tough time but I heard from the doctor today."

"And?" Klaus asked her absentmindedly while he started to pack.

"And she told me that it would be nearly impossible for me to get pregnant."

Klaus sighed, knowing that the results would be just that. And him being part vampire didn't help either.

"Are you OK?"

"No, Klaus, I am not okay. You know how much I want a child of my own. I mean I love Hope but she's not my daughter. That honor will always go to Hayley."

"You know we could always adopt. An infant who would call you Mom the minute she or he knows how to talk." Klaus smiled at her.

"I know, but it's just not the same."

"Okay, love, lets talk about it when we I get back."

"Back from where?" Camille asked, while just then noticing that her boyfriend is packing his clothes."

"From Mystic Falls. Hayley, Hope and I are gonna do a little family trip to deal with Hope's problem."

"And what's in Mystic Falls that could help her?"

"There are two sisters, twins, who can siphon that thing out of her."

"Twins? Wait, You are not talking about Caroline's kids, aren't you?"

Klaus sighed again, "Yes, Caroline's and Alaric's twins. They happen to be witches of very rare type."

"And you are gonna kidnap them?"

Klaus looked at her like she had just grown another head. "What? Of course not! I'm gonna go ask them nicely."

"And what if they say no?"

Klaus didn't answer and just picked up his bag, kissed her and left to get Hayley and Hope.

Caroline was in her office with a new student who already had gotten herself in trouble doing magic outside of classroom.

"Jenny, I know you have a hard time being away from home but I assure you, you will get used to it. In the meantime, please don't break the rules of this establishment."

"Whatever, can I go now?"

"Not yet. We'll have to punish you first. And the punishment is two weeks of detention after regular classes. Two hours every day."

"Fine."

"Okay, you are then free to go."

After the student was gone, Caroline only had a minute to sign some papers when a familiar voice sounded in the room.

"I almost feel sorry for the kid. Breaking one of Caroline Forbes' rules…" Klaus shook his head in mock disbelief.

Un-freaking-believable

"Klaus, what are you doing here? We had a deal about you showing up here. If anybody sees you here, if the parents find out-"

"Would you please breath?. I used an alias at the gate and at the door. I'm impressed, you really have turned a lot of attention to security. I'm glad my money goes to the right place."

"Shh…Klaus, please not so loud."

Klaus laughed. She still was as cute as ever. "Please calm down. We have a matter to discuss and I can't do that if you're already mad at me."

"You want something? I know you want something."

"Well, we didn't come all this way to see you have panic attack."

"Who's we? Hope is with you."

"And Hayley."

"So family trip to her school. What's the occasion?"

"First of all, what do you know about why Hope hasn't attended school for two weeks?"

"Hayley said that she was sick."

"That's half of the truth. She's infected by The Hollow, a dark magic, thousands of years old."

Klaus looked as her face changed from confused to shocked.

"Yes, and she needs all the help she can get"

"Okay, what do need from me?"

"I need a rare type of witch or two. From the Gemini coven."

If the situation wasn't so serious, he would have laughed at how her eyeballs nearly jumped out of her eye sockets.

No, no, no, no, no. Klaus Mikaelson isn't in her office, asking for her 9 year old daughters to lift a curse or darkness or whatever off his daughter. Could this day get any worse? Caroline thought to herself.

"No, absolutely not. They are just kids."

"So is Hope. They are witches, it's what they were born to do. To siphon magic out of one thing.."

"And put it in another. And where are they suppose to put it? You can't just shove a demon in a box and put it on a shelf. I need a drink!"

"They'll put it in Aurora de Martel, after which I will kill her. Problem solved."

Caroline closed her eyes for a second and sighed, "What if killing her doesn't work. Then we will have a crazy evil vampire running around with more evil power."

"Leave that to me. Caroline," he stepped closer to her and took her hands in his. " Caroline, I'm begging you. I promise I won't endanger your daughters."

"Okay, let me think for a little while. I need to talk with Alaric. I can't decide something like that without talking to him."
"Splendid. Where is he?"

"He's in France with the girls. In Disneyland."

"You have got to be kidding me…"

"It's a spring break, if you didn't know. And it's pretty much over, so they shouldn't be too upset that they would have to leave Paris a little early."

"Would you just call him please."

"Are you going to stay in town 'til then? If you do, you can't stay in the campus, Hayley and Hope can but you can't, okay? You are welcome to stay at our house, though."

"Thank you, Caroline. I'll go talk to Hayley and Hope and then leave the campus. Text me the address to your house."

"Okay, take the keys."

"Absolutely not. Are you out of your mind?" Alaric screamed on the phone at Caroline.

"Rick, please. We built this school to protect supernatural kids. Hope is one of those kids and she needs us. Now more than ever."

"What about our kids, Care? What if something goes wrong and they get infected with it. They are 9 years old, they are suppose to play with barbie dolls, not fight demons."

"Well, you can say the same thing about Hope. And if you are going to say that Hope's not our problem, then help me god, I'll-"

"No, I wasn't going to say that…" Alaric sighed in defeat. "I'm in but only if I can be there every step of the way and witness that Aurora getting the stake. Klaus Mikealson is not going to do a thing without me knowing until this thing is over."

"Okay, I'll talk to Klaus but I'm sure he agrees. Thank you so much, Rick. I owe you one." Caroline let out a huge sigh of relief. "When will you be back? They are all here, waiting. Klaus, Hayley and Hope with Aurora's body."

"I'm not sure. I'll let you know."

After hanging up the phone, Caroline felt exhausted, so she called it a day and headed to hope, but not before checking on Hope herself. So she went to her room and knocked on the door.

"Ms. Forbes, what are you doing here?"

"I came to check on you, honey. Your dad told me why you have been missing school. Can I come in?"

"Yes, come in. My mom's here too."

"So I've heard. Hi, Hayley," Caroline smiled and went to hug the other woman as she instantly stood up to do the same. As Klaus wasn't allowed to come to Mystic Falls, Caroline and Alaric had been mainly dealing with Hayley as she has been the one to attend parent-teacher conferences and giving Hope rides between home and school. So Caroline and Hayley had become good friends, both of them evolving past the animosity that was between them so long ago. And it wasn't a big secret, that Alaric especially liked Hayley who liked Alaric too, but was still very much in love with Elijah.

"Am I in trouble, Ms Forbes?"

"NO of course not. I just came to tell you that your dad and I think that we have a solution to what you are going through. We think that Lizzie and Josie can help you."

"Really?" Hope gushed. "Where are they?"

"They're in Paris with Mr Saltzman, but they'll be home very, very soon and then they'll help to get this thing out of you."

"So Alaric agreed to let the twins help us?" Hayley asked Caroline.

"Yes, he finally did."

"You slut! Don't play innocent, I know what you want and you are never gonna have my father." Hope suddenly screamed and suddenly Caroline was on her knees in pain, holding her head as Hope just laughed.

With a swift movement, Hayley grabbed Hope and flashed out of the room and out of the building into the garden. When she stopped, she looked at her daughter who was so confused."

"Mom, what happened? Did I just hurt Ms Forbes?"

"A little, but don't worry about. I'm sure she's okay." And then Hayley took her phone out and called Caroline.

"I'm sorry, Caroline. I don't know if Klaus mentioned it, but Hope has been having those mood swings…"

"No, I guess it slipped his mind but don't worry, I'm okay."

"Okay, it's better if you don't come near Hope right now. She's obviously having a bad day."

"Okay, I'm going home, Klaus I waiting for me there. You can stay in Hope's room. There's an extra bed and Hope's room mate is out of town."

"Thank you, Caroline."

When Caroline got home, the door was locked and it seemed that Klaus wasn't there. As her keys were with Klaus, she had to call him.

"Klaus, where are you with my keys?"

"I'm sorry, love, I totally forgot about the keys. I'm at the grill, having a drink. Care to join me?"

"Well, what other choice do I have?"

When Caroline got to the grill, her eyes searched for the Original hybrid and found him, of course, at the bar.

"A glass of wine please, white and semi-sweet," Caroline told the bartender her order as she sat down next to Klaus and turned to look at him with a quisitive look.

"Klaus, why didn't you tell me how bad it really was?"

"I didn't want to upset her. They episodes, it's nothing. Freya was able to mask most of the symptoms, much worse than that."

"I can't imagine it being worse…"

"Well she could be out there leading her army of followers, bent on destruction. So it can always be worse."

After a minute of silence, he asked, "Did she hurt you?"

"A little. But it's not me that I'm worried about."

"You know, I don't want to talk about this at all. Tonight, can we talk about something else, please."

"Like what?"

"Anything. Can I ask you a personal question?"

"Sure."

"After Stefan, did you find somebody else. Are you with someone right now?"

"No, I'm not, Klaus. I have dated some, but nothing substantial. I'm focused on my kids."

"That's very unfortunate. Of all the people I know in this world, you deserve happiness more than anyone else."

"I am happy. My kids make me happy."

"You know that's not what I mean."

Caroline got a bit upset with him. "You know what Klaus. Maybe it's your fault, you promised to be my last love and now you have been with a human for eight years. Are you going to turn her?"

"What, no. At least I don't think so. Not unless she wants me to, which I doubt. Being a vampire isn't for everybody, Caroline." Klaus sighed, deciding to address the first part of what she had just said. "You and I, Caroline, it can still happen but maybe not for a long time."

"I figured as much."

"Hey, Caroline, come here," and he grabbed her head with both hands, looking intently at her. "I still care about you a lot. I think part of me still loves you and always will. I will always be there for you if you need me."

"But not the way I need you to." Caroline was looking intently back at him.

Klaus closed his eyes for a minute in frustration.

Why does life have to be so difficult? If I could have my way, I would marry them both.

And without realizing what he was doing, he leaned in and kissed her on the lips. The kiss was slow at first, but when Caroline started to kiss him back, it quickly became passionate. Klaus pulled her head closer to him as he suddenly realized what he was doing and where they were doing it and he instantly pulled back.

"I'm sorry, this shouldn't have happened. And least of all not in a public place." Klaus told her, letting her go and turning away from her to stare at his whiskey glass.

"SO you are not worried that you just cheated on your girlfriend but that you did it publicly."

"What do you want me to say? My first priority isn't deciding what's right and wrong, but making sure that I won't hurt her and that entails her not knowing about this."

"I don't agree, but you are you and grey morals are part of your charm." She smiled slightly.

"Thanks, I guess." Klaus sighed. "Caroline, I don't think It's a good idea for me to stay at you place while I'm here. I'm afraid that if I do, I might-"

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Go check in the motel then."

"Okay. See you." And he turned to leave.

When Caroline got home, all she could think about was that kiss they had just shared.

I can't believe it. I'm like a school girl again. What is it about Klaus Mikaelson, that makes me loose my cool so easily. That kiss was exactly like the ones we shared that day in the woods a decade ago. Why do we want what we can't have.

Caroline was about to get to bed, she had showered and didn't have anything else on beside a bath robe, when she heard the front door open and then close. 'Someone is in the house' she thought.

She went downstairs to look. The house was totally dark, she was about turn on the lights, when someone grabbed her and when she tried to scream in shock, he had put a hand on her mouth.

"Shh… it's me, love, don't be freightened."

"Klaus, what are you doing here?"

"I couldn't sleep, all I could think about, was that kiss we shared earlier."

"I know the feeling. But we can't. I'm not one of those women who-"

"Who what?" he asked while closing in on her, their lips almost touching.

"Who wrecks homes." Caroline said, but didn't pull away.

Klaus chuckled. "How many times have I told you that you are not a human anymore. You are an animal now, a vampire. Things are not as black and white anymore." And then Klaus started to kiss her neck, with his hands starting to pull the collar of her robe down from her shoulders.

"Klaus, are you sure?" she groaned.

"I'm not, but I can't. keep. my. hands. off. of. you." with that he looked her in the eye he started to untie her robe. The last decision had to be hers.

"I can't either."

And then no more words were necessary. He pulled her robe apart and off of her while his lips crashed on hers in a passionate kiss. She wrapped her legs around his hips and he flashed upstairs to the master bedroom while holding her.

Next thing she knew they were on the bed, him on top of her. He let go of her for a minute to remove his own clothes and they continued where they left off.

That night they totally forgot about reality. That was the second tacid agreement between them, that they would enjoy each other that night and only that night and then they would go their separate ways.

New day was dawning when they were comfortably in each other's arms.

"When did it start to get light outside?" Caroline asked.

"I think it was sometime during the third time." Klaus mused, starting to kiss her again.

"Well, there won't be a fourth time, Klaus."

"Why not, we have quite the stamina." He teased.

"You know why."

"You are such a party pooper, Caroline." He groaned.

Caroline sighed cause it wasn't easy to be Caroline Forbes. "Okay, last kiss and then I'm off to shower and when I get back, you are gone, capish?"

Klaus just nodded as he pulled her in for the most passionate kiss he could still muster. He kissed her like the world was ending which could still very well happen.

After she had showered and returned to her bedroom, she found that he had kept his promise to be gone. There was a simple note on the night stand that read, "No word of this night to Camille ever or… you don't want to know. Burn this note."

So this Chapter shows my opinion about Klaus' relationship with both of his women. While he has a deep intellectual or spiritual connection with Camille (His humanity pulls him toward Camille and with a degree in psychology, she maybe gets Klaus better), he shares more primal, physical connection with Caroline. They are vampires, not humans and they are pulled towards each other mainly physically. What part of him is gonna win, well, you are going to have to read to find out.
