CHAPTER 16: The Vicissitude of Life
April's perspective as well as the first introduction of OCs! So much fun 3 TW for needles and light torture.
To say she was disoriented was an understatement. April didn't know where she was or what was happening when she came to, in fact when she had first opened her eyes she thought she was laying on her back looking up at the sun due to the bright light she was being faced with. Trying to put the pieces together of her memory she could access she found herself more relieved at the lack of burning on her left side that was very apparent last time she was awake.
Groggily turning her head to the side, she saw what looked like a blood bag hanging beside her, attempting to reach for it but quickly coming to the realization she was indeed strapped down to the bed-like table she was laying on. That's when the panic started to flow through her mind. Not knowing where she was, how much time had passed or what was going on, it quickly became apparent that she was not alone in this room. Turning her head to the right, and there stood a man who was clicking away on a computer that appeared to be more industrial looking than one the average person may possess.
She sucked in a breath when he looked at her, something about his gaze on her made her feel more anxious than at ease. He was a middle aged looking man, couldn't have been any older than 55, with salt and pepper hair slicked back and a little bit of stubble on his face. He gave her a once over with his eyes, something that made April more angry at than afraid before speaking to her in an oddly exhausted tone.
?: You lost a lot of blood. I could have let you bleed out but I didn't. You should be grateful.
April: Uh, excuse me? I don't even know what is happening right now…
?: Most don't. Honestly most don't even really talk…although some attempt to beg. I don't like when they beg…
April felt herself getting more and more concerned with the situation she had found herself in, pulling up on the straps again, but having absolutely no strength to move more than half an inch off the table. Her eyes having settled to the light glaring down on her, inspecting around the room from her stationary position. The room has a few medical grade machines within it, but mostly boxes, familiar looking boxes at that.
Wait…that looks similar to the Hunora medical boxes from the other day…
April looked back over to the man sitting at the computer who was still typing away, really inspecting his face before managing to put two and two together. Thinking back to the Hunora and Geno-car Inc research she had done previously, having read an article about a well know genetics physician named Dr. Roland Mickenzy who was making strides in the genetic mutation and merging field regarding fruits and vegetables. His work was becoming more and more inspirational and starting to be applied to mammals and human DNA. April took a chance, smiling internally at the response she wanted as the man stopped typing, turning to look at her again.
April: Is it true about your work…Dr. Mickenzy?
Dr. Mickenzy:...now this is a new development for sure…no one has ever said my name while I've done this…
April: I knew it, you are Dr. Mickenzy. So you are working with Hunora and Geno-Car Inc…
Dr. Mickenzy gave her a look before scoffing, getting up off his stool and approaching her on the table. The way he slithered over to her admittedly made her uncomfortable, he looked at her as though she was not a human being (while she isn't quite, he doesn't need to know that), as if she wasn't a life. The way he leaned down close to her face, looking into her eyes with his own lifeless looking brown ones, his eyes darting from her face to her side and then to her hand which had been bandaged up from her last encounter.
Dr. Mickenzy: You know, I am not happy with you young lady. Letting go of someone's pets…their experiments..well it's not very nice now is it? But there's nothing to worry about, you'll make a fine addition to the next set of subjects.
April could feel the blood drain from her face at the venom in his words, the way he glared at her before turning to the medical table beside her, desperately trying to play it cool at the sight of the familiar glowing green goo in a syringe beside them. She knew herself she was immune to the topical effects of the mutagen, but how much did he already know about her? The doctor took a peek at her face, reading through her stoic look, picking up a clear looking syringe first.
Dr. Mickenzy: It's not every day I meet someone who is able to identify me…so although you have cost me my test subjects, I'll offer you a little play by play of what is about to occur. While you were unconscious and I kindly gave you a blood transfusion, you're welcome by the way, I attempted to do what I have before with previous experiments. However you…you didn't give the expected results.
April watched, yelping out as the doctor took her arm, injecting her with the first mystery syringe of liquid. Fight as she might, it did absolutely nothing. She had felt helpless before, hell she had felt helpless most of her life as decisions and things out of her control just kept happening, but in this moment, even with all the precautions and everything she knew. She could do nothing. The doctor continued on in his tired, almost bored sounding voice.
Dr Mickenzy: This funny enough brought me more excitement than frustration as you may have assumed. So I took the liberty of collecting your DNA and analyzing it with my data. You young lady have interesting genes I have to say…although the likelihood that you'll fall victim to cancer in your later years is higher than others. I'd bet money that someone has or had cancer in your family prior to you…aw don't cry, it makes this so much more awkward for me…
April hadn't even noticed the waterworks falling forth from her eyes, it was true that he had indeed struck a nerve, but for her to cry over it felt surprising to her nonetheless. She wasn't even aware it was possible to feel this violated to have her DNA analyzed to the point he could see cancer as a possibility in her future, although he didn't leave her much time to ponder it as he injected her with the second syringe of clear liquid, gritting her teeth as she could feel it running through her body the moment it entered, and it burned. The doctor was not paying her any attention as he continued, picking up the last syringe with the familiar liquid inside.
Dr. Mickenzy: After some simple modification and adjustments compared to my prior subjects and work, I found that I can counteract your…'interesting' DNA and get the results the team and client want. At the end of the day, even you're not safe from this abomination. Now hold still for me, wouldn't want to miss again and have another casualty~
April frantically attempted to pull away from the doctor as he moved closer although she knew that it was futile. She frantically began wishing that her beloved Donatello would come to her aid as he always had. He was going to crash into the room at any moment and whisk her away from this cruel ass-hole for a guy and maybe there would be a cool action movie explosion and they would run off together as things had always been. She let out a yelp as the doctor, who was getting fed up with her moving, took her head with his hand, pressing her head to the table so she would stop moving around.
She felt the jab of the syringe push into her neck, invading her body. She couldn't suppress the scream that left her body, or attempted to leave. Opening her mouth and trying her best to expel the pain that was now coursing and entering her, nothing came out. Her body seemed to lose control of itself as she began to shake and contour the best she could while being strapped down. The pain from being shot in the side yesterday was back but this, this was vile.
Mentally begging to whatever higher being would hear her, she frantically begged to die, she felt hot and cold all at the same time, past the extremes of human capabilities. Her mind was racing and also absolutely dead, unable to process what was even happening to her. She felt her body screaming in pain but also attempting to lull her into a state of zen. Feeling the straps being removed from her arms and legs, she was of no use to herself now, balling up on the table and shaking violently.
Gritting her teeth just to make her head look up at the man who had inflicted this upon her, she was met with eyes of curiosity. Even just feeling his eyes on her made her body hurt as if someone had hit her. Sliding to the edge of the table was more of a fight than she had ever considered it would be, each millimeter felt like she had sprinted a mile. While she had mentally resolved herself the best she could that she would continue on, she didn't make it very far till the doctor had sighed, becoming disinterested in her again.
Pushing a button on the wall behind him, two Kraang droids marched in. He didn't even say anything to them, just gesturing to the mess that was April on the medical table. The way their synthetic hands grabbed her by the upper arms made her thrash against them in pain, marching her through the door as the doctor sighed, plopping himself back at the computer, idly typing away once more, like clockwork.
