Summary: Kaitou KID was retired. Shinichi was counting the days until his boyfriend was going to fully lose his mind and return to thieving out of sheer boredom.
Retirement Plan II
Don't Underestimate Phantom Thieves
Kudou Shinichi was no longer a patient man. After all, he had lost so much of his time to being Conan. Well, 'lost' was a bit of an unfair term. The people he had met and befriended during the time, the evil organization he had helped take down, all the murders he'd solved. The thief he had met, chased and fallen in love with. Still lost in a sense, since Kudou Shinichi hadn't been there, Kudou Shinichi hadn't befriended these people.
Once he got his body back, he had to deal with this disconnect. One of the things he had looked forward to the most was getting to match wits with Kaitou KID, with his fully grown legs. More running, more access, more kicking. And... being able to look into KID's eyes when they talked, instead of at KID's kneecaps. But he'd barely turned back when KID left.
Said his goodbyes and everything. How infuriating. Damned thief. What was a detective to do with that? Well, the obvious thing. Hunt down KID's civil identity and set up a date.
And here he was, five months later, dating Kuroba Kaito, a completely normal college student. The class clown, in a way, with his magic. Which, admittedly, was nice. It was great to get to see KID's tricks even outside a heist. Kaito's hands... Shinichi flushed at the thought. He did love to watch those hands performing all sorts of tricks. They were so elegant, the best representation of who Kaito and KID were. And yes, sometimes, Shinichi found himself thinking of them as two different people, the same way he thought of himself and Conan as two different people, because they had led two different lives that were not allowed to overlap.
Perhaps that had been part of the attraction. Because Kaitou KID understood what it was like to put on a persona and be someone else. To lead two different lives. To lie to those he loved the most every single day. KID understood, he didn't judge Shinichi for the lies he was entangled in, the choices he made, he simply understood. And Shinichi found solace in that understanding.
It was nice, being with KID. No. Being with Kaito. Kaito was a goofball, but not... entirely? He could be aloof and fun and a brilliant light in the darkness of Shinichi's murder-haunted life. But Kaito was also still the brilliant mind behind KID, he was so sharp, so clever, so witty.
He was, however, also absolutely incapable of sitting still for longer periods of time. Which was the main reason why Shinichi didn't see this whole 'retirement' plan working out for too long.
And it wasn't supposed to, as Shinichi now knew. Part of him had been afraid when Kaitou KID had retired. Yet after confronting his thief, he had learned that Kaito only wanted to retire for a brief time. To graduate from high school and sort his priorities, choose what he wanted to do with his life. Start college, maybe. And once he was settled, he wanted to start being KID again.
"You wouldn't turn me in, right, Shin-chan?" Kaito asked him.
Kaito, laying sprawled out on the couch with his head resting on Shinichi's lap, looking up at the detective. It was so cute, how affectionate he was. Shinichi smiled, twirling one of the wild curls around his finger. He loved these little moments with just Kaito and him.
"You return what you steal," offered Shinichi after a moment. "And you told me about your plans. You want to uncover forgeries and take care of gems and jewelry stolen by others. Returning them to their rightful owner. I don't see why I would arrest you."
The post-retirement plan, so to speak. Since Kaito had only been KID to look for one specific jewel and he no longer needed to find it, he had come up with this new mission goal. And... Shinichi liked it. He'd always appreciated the heists where KID uncovered something illegal.
Now, the question at hand for Shinichi was: When? Because to Kaito, it had been a vague 'when things settle down'. After graduation, after he got settled into college. They were in college now, going to class. They'd made friends, Kaito had made a name for himself as a magician on campus. Adoring fans, who awaited his next impromptu show. Among them, Sonoko.
"We're running late for lunch with Ran and Sonoko."
The next second, Kaito was off his lap and pulling him along eagerly. It was cute, Shinichi was aware that 'befriend Sonoko to get to know Shinichi' had been part of Kaito's so-called masterplan of seducing Shinichi. Which, Shinichi gathered, made sense. The two had a lot in common. Much to Shinichi's worst nightmares, the two had indeed hit it off and quickly become friends. Well, Shinichi got his revenge by befriending Hakuba, which probably drove Kaito just as mad.

"Another imposter," Sonoko heaved a depressed sigh. "When will the real KID-sama return?"
She was tapping a finger against the newspaper headline. Every Friday, Shinichi and Kaito were meeting up with Ran and Sonoko for lunch, because it was the one day their classes lined up that way. And Kaito loved it! Loved spending time with them, getting to really know the people important to Shinichi, just as Shinichi had gotten to know Kaito's friends.
"You think he will return?" asked Kaito curiously.
Kaito knew KID was going to return. Because he was KID and he definitely couldn't give it up forever just yet. But what made Sonoko so sure of it...? Or was it just hopeful fangirl thinking?
"Kaitou KID-sama is a showman!" Sonoko waved a fist in the air. "He entertains people! He was never just a thief who stole for the sake of stealing. Even if he were done stealing, he is not done entertaining his fans yet. He lives to entertain, have you seen him?"
Well, he'll be damned. She was right. Kaito could feel the itch for it, every time he put on a show on campus, he had to think about how much bigger and grander he could make it. Damn it. A hand came to rest on his knee, stopping the bouncing of his leg. Turning a bit, Kaito looked at Shinichi. His boyfriend offered him a small smile before returning his attention to his conversation with Ran.
Ah, his Shin-chan knew exactly when Kaito needed him. And he also knew when Kaito was growing tense with having to sit still. He smiled and leaned in to kiss Shinichi's cheek softly.
"Urgh, you two are so adorable," Sonoko rolled her eyes. "How did Shinichi, of all people, land such a nice and good-looking boyfriend like you, Kuroba-kun?"
"He's just lucky like that," Kaito grinned broadly. "Right, Shin-chan?"
"Depends on the time of day," replied Shinichi in a dry voice.
"Shinichi," Ran giggled just slightly. "Don't be like that. Everyone can see how smitten you are with him. I have never seen you this happy before."
Shinichi flushed and ducked his head. "Don't tell him that, Ran."
Kaito snickered, puffing his chest out a little. Oh, he knew. He definitely knew. But seeing Shinichi blush was always a bonus, because it was totally adorable.

They had officially entered caged animal stage of things. Shinichi frowned as he lowered the book he was trying to read. Kaito kept pacing, he kept bouncing things off the wall as he was juggling, he kept trying out new tricks. Yes, he always tried out new tricks, but the amount became... excessive.
"Kaito..." Shinichi sighed and put the book away. "Are you... bored?"
"Well, I mean..." Kaito stopped the card-shuffling he'd been doing. "I finished the assignments. I prepped a new trick for campus, I guess, I... Why do you ask...?"
"I'm the Great Detective, as you like to call me," pointed Shinichi out. "But it doesn't take any detective at all to figure out that you've been getting more and more bored lately... Even with our dates, and college classes, you seem... aimless, a lot."
Kaito scratched his cheek in a sheepish manner. "I... guess. I mean, you got your case work and all and keep running into murders too and it just... leaves me with some... extra time at my hands..."
And the magician looked genuinely lost, like he didn't know what to do with that. How to fill his time. Was... Was the idiot serious? Shinichi heaved a sigh and got up. He walked out of the library, leaving behind a confused Kaito, who started shuffling cards again.
"Have you considered... this?"
Kaito looked up at the sound of his boyfriend's voice. Oh. His detective was wearing the KID hat and the monocle. Mh. There was a visual Kaito was filing away for later usage.
"KID..." Kaito trailed off, curious. "Huh..."
"Maybe it's time to come out of retirement?" Shinichi waked over to him and put the hat on Kaito's head instead. "You always said it was only supposed to be a temporary retirement."
Right. Kaito took the hat off, twirling it on the tip of his finger. He'd missed this.
"It's not that I... forgot..." Kaito frowned. "It's just kind of, I don't know. With everything going on... I don't know, it just felt... There's so much to do? So many classes?"
"That you have a grip on because you're a genius."
"And befriending your friends," Kaito continued.
"Which you did so successfully, I feel like Sonoko likes you more than me. By a lot."
Mh. Kaito guessed that Shinichi was right. He had a grip on his life now. Everything was going smooth. So smooth that Kaito had gotten bored. A lot. Okay yeah, Shinichi was definitely right.
"How did I not notice but you did?" asked Kaito confused.
The smile on Shinichi's lips was so soft as he leaned in to kiss Kaito briefly. "Because I love you."
Oh boy, Kaito was super never going to grow tired of hearing that. Grinning broadly, Kaito grabbed his boyfriend and pulled him down onto his lap. Shinichi raised one eyebrow, but he allowed it. Kaito's arms wrapped around Shinichi's waist to pull him closer.
"What would I do without you, Great Detective?"
"More chaos and mayhem than you already cause?" Shinichi suggested.
"Ye—eah, maybe," Kaito laughed, leaning his head against Shinichi's shoulder. "But it wouldn't be as much fun, you know. Because it wasn't. Before you joined the scene. You made my heists so much more fun, so much more excitable... I do miss our chases..."
Shinichi laid his arms around Kaito's shoulders and leaned in closer, resting his chin on Kaito's shoulder so his mouth was close enough to Kaito's ear to whisper softly.
"I do too," admitted Shinichi. "It was... a nice thrill."
That put the brightest smile on Kaito's lips. It was rare for Shinichi to admit that.
"Time to come out of retirement then," declared Kaito. "For Kaitou KID and the KID Killer."
