Chapter 9 - It's a Dreamy, Dreamy World

As quickly as they could, Team NPR ran back to their dorm room and started gathering their supplies. They switched out of their school uniform and changed into their normal combat attire and grabbed their weapons. Once they were ready, they made a beeline for the infirmary… only to fall to the ground after crashing into someone.

"Ow… Ren, somebody turned off the lights!" Nora moaned.

"I'm so sorry, but we're in a bit of a hurry! Huh? Ruby?" Pyrrha dusted off her skirt and armor, helping up the collapsed gothic redhead. Ruby wined and gingerly rubbed her head. Interestingly, she was carrying something in her hands, which was wrapped in a white tarp. Also, on her right hand was a black fingerless glove with silver studs on the knuckles and a bracelet with a red crystal heart outlined in gold.

"It's okay, don't worry about it Pyrrha! I should've been looking where I was going!" Ruby quickly apologized, wrapping her hands around the tarp again. "Hey, is something going on? You all seem like you're panicking a bit?"

"Nope, nothing bad ever happened! It's not like our leader has been possessed by an evil eldritch monstrosity from and is currently slowly killing Jaune! Nope, nothing inherently horrifying is happening whatsoever! At all!" Nora explained.

"I'm sorry, what?"

"Listen, it's a lot to explain, and we simply don't have the time," Ren stated. "Once this is all over, then we'll tell you."

"Well, when you phrase it like that it sounds like you're all going on a super secret dangerous mission," Ruby commented. "Can I come?"

Ren and Nora shared a look. "I'm sorry, but it be better if we–"

"No!" Pyrrha suddenly shouted, drawing the other three's attention. "If even Jaune's emotions were being manipulated, this entire situation escalated because he believed that he alone should be responsible for his improvement, which is entirely incorrect." She told Ren and Nora. "Ruby, if it isn't too much of a bother, we'd gladly accept your help!" Pyrrha offered her hand and helped Ruby up.

"Great! Now, let me get the rest of my team…"

"I don't think we have enough time, unfortunately," Ren muttered. "Remember, Meta Knight wanted this to be dealt with as soon as possible." Ruby frowned for a moment, but nodded either way.

"In that case…" Ruby said with a smile. She grabbed Pyrrha with one hand and Ren and Nora in the other, activating her semblance and blasted off, leaving a shower of rose petals in her wake.

"Wait, so what's going on anyways?" Ruby asked.

"Well, it's definitely a surprise, albeit, not a very good one…" Nora muttered.

"Holy crap…" Ruby breathed, her silver eyes widening in horror upon looking at Jaune and Dark Matter's comatose body. The other's noticed that it was the first time they had heard her curse.

"So, this… Dark Matter thing invaded his body and is now taking it over?" the black and red haired girl asked, taking a few steps closer to get a better look. Ren quickly grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back as the eyes on Jaune's body glaring at her hatefully.

"It's best to keep your distance. He can't harm us, but… It'd be better if you didn't see what we had to witness," He said. Ruby glumly nodded. Nora described how Jaune first reacted to them getting closer, and to be perfectly honest, she'd much rather have a good night's rest rather than a horrifying nightmare.

"Is everything prepared?" Meta Knight asked, having suddenly appeared from his twirling cape and scaring the four humans. "Ruby, you're here. Why?"

"One of my friends is in trouble! Do I need any other reason to be here?" Meta Knight's eyes shone a deep blue, and the haphazardly put together team could hear him chuckle.

"No, not at all." Kirby would be proud of her. Speaking of the puffball…

"Unfortunately, Kirby will be unable to join us," Meta Knight explained, his gaze momentarily shifting to Ruby. "However, that won't be much of a problem, since Ruby is here to aid us."

"Alright! So, how the hell are we going to fix Jaune?" Nora asked immediately.

"The process is quite simple. We simply have to go inside his dreams and destroy Dark Matter from inside," Meta Knight casually explained.

Ruby, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren all stared blankly at him.

"I'm sorry, what?" Nora asked, raising a finger in confusion. "H-how is that simple,"

"The symptoms Jaune has shown, while similar, are noticeably different. Usually, Dark Matter's possessions are instantaneous, so he should have flown off the handle the second Dark Matter entered his body. But he hasn't. In fact, we have reason to believe Dark Matter has been inside Jaune's body for weeks now. This leads me to believe that Dark Matter is attacking Jaune's mind rather than his body, something that has never been recorded before," Meta Knight explained

"Okay… but, why would Dark Matter do that? And why?" Ren asked.

"The 'how,' we cannot explain just yet. As for the 'why…' Tell me, do any of you know how a virus reproduces?" Meta Knight asked cryptically.

Strategy - Fade Out

Now Playing… Boss: Heavy Dog (Shadow the Hedgehog)

"I think I read about it in a book once," Nora announced, surprising Ruby and Pyrrha. "If I remember correctly, viruses can't reproduce on their own, so they hijack cells in the body and force them to copy the DNA inside the virus. The cells completely focus on making more viruses and when there are enough…" Nora recalled, her voice trailing off at the end. Her eyes suddenly widened and she shouted loudly, "WAIT, YOU MEAN THAT–"

"That is correct. If we allow this to continue, Jaune's body will explode from the inside out and release all of the Dark Matter that has been created inside his body. The amount will not only destroy Beacon, from the inside out, but also all of Vale if we are unable to contain it in time.," Meta Knight finished for her.

"You mean to say that Jaune is essentially a ticking time bomb!" Pyrrha shouted at the top of her lungs.

"Well, a thermonuclear weapon would be a more adequate comparison, but yes," Meta Knight nonchalantly corrected.

"Okay, that's absolutely fucking terrifying, but how the hell does Jaune's dreams factor into this?!" Nora shouted at Meta Knight.

"As I stated earlier, Jaune's mind is being attacked, not his body. Normally, this should be impossible. However, while scanning Jaune's brain, our magicians have found something most interesting emitting from his body: Dream Energy."

"Dream… Energy?" Ruby asked. The knight nodded grimly.

"Based on our research, every living being is capable of creating Dream Energy whenever they sleep. However, the amount of Energy given off by Jaune's is unprecedented. There is enough Dream Energy in his mind in order to create a sort of pocket dimension inside the realm of his consciousness, a Dream World. Just to clarify, this is in no way related to a semblance; all living beings are capable of creating Dream World's whenever they sleep, if there is enough energy."

However, Meta Knight thought to himself, creating Dream Worlds is directly tied to magic. According to Ozpin, everybody only has trace amounts of magic in their souls to generate Semblances and Aura. It's nowhere near enough to create a Dream World, even if a semblance is directly tied to dreams.

"So, what exactly is happening in the… Dream World?" Ruby asked. "Nora said that viruses hijack the cell so that they make more viruses. Does that mean that Dark Matter is somehow manipulating Jaune's imagination so that it can create more of itself?"

"That is the primary theory we are working with, but we won't know for sure unless we travel into the Jaune's Dream World," Meta Knight confirmed.

"But, how exactly are we traveling to Jaune's Dream World," Ren questioned. "Since a Dream World is made from Dream Energy created by Jaune's brain, I'm going to assume that it doesn't actually exist, physically anyways."

"While I would like to explain, I'm not well versed enough in magic or Dream Worlds to explain the technical aspects of traveling to a Dream World," Meta Knight admitted. "The most I can tell you is that the magician is going to establish a connection between our minds and Jaune's Dream World."

Boss: Heavy Dog - Fade Out

"Alright, then. So, when will the magician arrive?" Pyrrha asked.

"I'm right here, ya lazy lugs! Kya ha ha ha!"

To Ruby, the cackling laughter made her cringe slightly. She instinctively tried to pull the tarp closer to her chest. For Ren and Nora, the laughter was slightly unsettling, but with everything that was happening they chose not to dwell on it for too long.

For Pyrrha however, it felt like somebody stabbed a pike directly into her soul.

As she stood before a giant clockwork star, the machine asked for her wish. But before she could answer, someone pushed her out of the way, and demanded that the wish granting star give it the power to rule over Planet Popstar. The next thing she knew, Pyrrha was face to face with Marx, but this time he was almost two times larger than her, with a wide, face-splitting grin, crazed eyes, and a disheveled and tattered bow hanging from his body.

Back in the infirmary, Marx was staring directly at her with a knowing smile plastered on his smug face. Pyrrha's hand went to Milo's hilt and gripped it.

"Marx?! What are you doing here?!" Ruby asked tentatively. The jester looked at her for a moment, and then winked at Pyrrha, making her flinch slightly.

"Why, I'm here to transport all of you into the Dream World, of course! After all, I am a magic user! You think I only use my powers to mess with weapons? Speaking of which, whaddya got behind that cover?" The jester asked innocently.

"YOU CAN'T HAVE IT!" Ruby said too loudly, prompting another round of cackling from Marx.

"Kya ha ha! Oh, relax Rubes. It'd be very irresponsible of me to send you to a dangerous place without your weapon. Wouldn't it be a shame if you got mauled by a grimm because you couldn't defend yourself?" Pyrrha winced slightly at Marx's tone. Something in his voice told her that who wouldn't necessarily mind it if that happened.

"Marx, behave yourself," Meta Knight ordered. To the surprise of Ruby and Pyrrha, Marx made a salute with one his golden wings and suddenly put on a serious face.

"Yes, Boss Man!" Marx whined. "So why don't we get started then! Make sure you have everything on you, your weapons, ammo, and other supplies. If it's not physically touching you in any way, then it won't follow you into the Dream World!" The jester explained. "Other than that, just close your eyes and focus your thoughts on scrawny over there. That'll make it easier for you guys to enter the Dream World!"

Ren, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ruby nodded, and did as he said, albeit some hesitation coming from the latter two girls. Before he started Marx shared a look with Meta Knight.

"Go for Ruby first. We don't know how her eyes will react to your magic," He told the jester, who just scoffed at his warning.

"Puh-lease! I am a professional! I know what I'm doing!" Marx then hovered over to the barrier around Jaune's body and phased through it, situating himself above it.

"Most of the time… Tee hee hee!"

Fawful is There - Fade Out

Ruby wasn't sure of how to feel about all of this. Sure, she was pretty skilled and Pyrrha was also going with them, but would that truely be enough to stop whatever Dark Matter was doing. It felt like a lot, especially with the stakes and time limit hanging over their head. Though, they did have Meta Knight backing them up. He's pretty strong and really fast, so they should be able to stop this and save Jaune with his help. Marx might even be able to... do something, maybe?

"Oof!" Ruby landed on something cold and soft. With a groan, she pulled herself and propped herself against a tree. "Wait, tree?"

Ruby groaned and opened her eyes, wincing slightly due to the unnatural lighting of the world she found herself in. The sky was a strange mix of twilight and sunset, with green and purple streaks of light snaking their way across the sky. It was like an aurora borealis, but it looked strangely alive in some way.

She also couldn't see much of anything past twenty away from her. The entire forest she was in was stuck in a massive blizzard, with winds fast enough to cause her cloak and hair to fly wildly. Ruby kept a tight grip on her new weapon to keep it from tumbling out of her hands.

"Pyrrha? Nora? Ren?" Ruby called out, taking a few steps forward, narrowing her eyes to see better. "Meta Knight? Is anybody there?"

As she stepped forward, her boot stepped on something, creating a harshing clicking sound. Her eyes widened, and she activated Petal Burst to get out of the way. Not even a second later, the ground exploded where she once was, annihilating the snow and trees in a massive fireball. The force of the explosion knocked Ruby off her feet and sent her careening into the ground. As her back hit the floor, she heard another clicking sound.

As quickly as possible, she leapt from the ground, using the explosive force to propel to a nearby tree. Dropping the tarp, Ruby revealed a curved blade and stabbed it into a nearby tree, and landed on one of the branches.

Ruby's new weapon, courtesy of Weapon Shop Waddle Dee, were a pair of slightly curved black blades with intricate rose and thorn designs etched into the flat of the blade that glowed light blue. Ruby placed the ends of the hilt next to each other, they connected like magnets, forming a bow. The piece that connected the blades started glowing, as did the heart bracelet on Ruby's wrist.

Weapon Shop Waddle Dee called it the Spark Archer. Ruby preferred to call it Shimmering Rose.

Ruby placed the heart bracelet to the glowing magnet piece, and pulled her hand backwards. The heart piece generated a glowing silver bolt that got longer the more Ruby pulled back her hand. According to WSWD, Shimmering Rose drew power from her Aura to create its light arrows, and imbued it with the Spark Copy Ability. It made Ruby question why the arrows were silver, since her Aura is colored red, but she didn't think about it too much after Waddle Dee explained how it worked.

Ruby opened her first, and the light arrow went flying into the ground, creating an electrical shockwave. She heard sputtering sounds coming from underneath the snow as the arrow dissolved into silver sparkles. She jumped down from the tree and landed to the closest sound, and dug up the snow.

"Wow… these are some big landmines…" Ruby muttered to herself, taking out an entire bundle of dynamite with a red button on top. She picked herself off the ground and started firing out more arrows, disabling any nearby mines. Once she was mildly sure that all of them had been disabled, Ruby grabbed the dynamite she unearthed and tossed it as far as she could. She waited for an explosion to occur, but nothing happened. With a nod, Ruby cautiously walked forwards looking for a way out of the forest.

She disconnected her bow and held the twin blades in front of her, keeping her eyes and ears alert as she walked through the endless white field, passing by a strange bird-like statue wearing intricate armor. As Ruby walked, she tried calling out for her comrades once more, hoping that they would be able to hear her now.

They didn't hear her, but something else did.

Now Playing… Ghost (Sonic Frontiers)

The eyes on the bird statue began glowing, and the base started cracking. As soon as Ruby heard it, the statue leapt into the air and came crashing down in front of her. The force pushed Ruby back, having to dig her heels into the ground to keep her from falling over. While she recollected herself, the bird statue drew its weapons; a flail morning star in its left hand, and an oversized mace in the other.

The stone statue shrieked, and a wall of light surrounded Ruby and the stone monster.

Petrichozo

Petrichozo opened its mouth, and started firing spheres of energy at her. Ruby dodged and weaved away from the attacks, and blocked with Shimmering Rose if they got close to her. Once the blasts stopped coming, she ran forwards, dodging a swing from the morning star and driving her twin blade's into Petrichozo's head.

The blade's bounced off harmlessly. Petrichozo slammed its beak into Ruby's forehead, knocking her away, and then slammed its mace into the floor, creating a wave of spikes that spread across the field. As Ruby landed, she jumped up to avoid the spikes, and put Shimmering Rose into its bow form. She fired three arrows, and Petrichozo sidestepped the attacks, but one arrow managed to clip its pauldron. It bounced off, and the stone remained unscathed.

Ruby pouted, and went on the offensive again, while keeping Shimmering Rose in its bow form. She twirled the blade with one hand and used the other to vault over another spike wave. In the air, she threw Shimmering Rose at Petrichozo's head, and again it just bounced. Shimmering Rose spun like a boomerang, and returned to Ruby's hand. She brought Shimmering Rose up, and the blade clanged against the flail morningstar. Ruby grunted as she tried to keep herself steady under Petrichozo's strength.

Ruby pushed forwards, and even managed to knock Petrichozo off balance. She separated her blades and started slashing quickly and wildly. But even after twelve blows, the stone statue was completely unharmed. Petrichozo quickly regained balance, and slammed its mace into Ruby's chest, sending the girl into the wall of light. It then raised its morning star hand and thrust it forward. The chain connecting the spiked ball with the shaft kept extending however, and Ruby had to roll out of the way to keep it from caving in her head.

Ruby fired more arrows into the ground, hoping the electric field would stun it, if only for a brief moment, but her wish didn't come true. At most, Petrichozo only seemed mildly annoyed at the attacks. The glowing markings across its body became brighter, and it started firing more arrows. As she strafed around, she saw a large glowing emblem on its back that looked like two crescent moons.

Ruby fired one arrow, and Petrichozo screeched. The glowing markings became dull, and the statue went limp as its head opened, allowing a crystal ball to float outside. By this point, video game logic won over and Ruby lunged towards the ball. Her blades did phase through it, but she could hear the ball shriek loudly each time her attacks connected. She flipped around and slammed her heel into the ball, knocking it around like a pinball as it bounced all over the arena.

The ball then slammed into Petrichozo's chest, and reentered the statue's head. Petrichozo flared back to life, firing bolts of energy into the sky. Ruby tried to get behind it again, but the bird statue managed to keep up with her, blocking her attacks with minimal effort. Petrichozo stomped the ground, stunning Ruby for a brief moment. In that second, the bolts that it fired off early started crashing back down, and it raised its mace and knocked Ruby into the air. One energy ball crashed into her back, which caused her to fall back down, and into Petrichozo's mace.

Ruby's aura crackled under the pressure as she was sent flying. With a grunt, Ruby planted her feet on the wall and jumped back towards the bird statue. Petrichozo extended its morning star again, and Ruby knocked it away with a swing from Shimmering Rose. She aimed one arrow between the statue's legs and fired. The electrical blast managed to stun Petrichozo for a moment, but not enough to free its core. Ruby used her semblance to try and get behind Petrichozo, but the statue managed to regain control and swing its mace downwards, creating another spike wave.

Ruby easily avoided, and dropped to her knees when it swung its morningstar. When it raised its leg, Ruby jumped as Petrichozo stomped, preventing her from getting stunned. Annoyed, Petrichozo opened its mouth and started firing from its mouth again, and Ruby zigzagged her way between the blasts. Its fighting style is really predictable once she knows its attack patterns.

Sort of like Jaune's, Ruby realized.

Petrichozo raised its mace arm and swung. Ruby ducked underneath the attack and grabbed its shoulder, and pulled herself up to its head and wrapped her legs around its neck. The bird let out a startled squawk, and Ruby used its surprise to plunge her blade into the statue's weak point. The crystal ball came flying out again, and Ruby had to lean forward to keep it from escaping. As she fell off the statue, she gripped the ball tightly and slammed it into Petrichozo's beak.

The ball screeched loudly as it dulled and crumbled to pieces in Ruby's hand as she landed roughly on her shoulder. The stone statue began to fall apart, releasing purple beams of light from the resulting cracks. After a few seconds, the statue disappeared in a bright, neon pink explosion.

Ghost - End

Ruby didn't put away her weapons even when the explosion died down. She half expected Petrichozo to rebuild itself and go on the attack again. She could thank Pyrrha's match against Heavy Lobster for instilling that paranoia inside her.

Serious, who programs a giant metal robot to fake out its death five separate times!

But, instead of Petrichozo rebuilding itself and going on the attack once more, a small silver key fizzled into existence instead, glowing brightly and floating just a couple inches above the ground. Curiously, Ruby walked towards it and reached out to grab it. When her fingers made contact, the key dissolved into tiny particles and flew into her chest, almost like it was absorbed into her.

"Looks like I got a small key," Ruby muttered to herself.

…Now what?

She was still in the middle of nowhere, with no friends to help her, with all sorts of monsters probably surrounding her the longer she stays in one place. Not only that, she has to find Dark Matter before Jaune becomes a thermonuclear bomb and blows up almost half of Vale. No pressure.

In the end, Ruby just closed her eyes, pointed forwards and started spinning on her heel. After a few seconds of spinning, she opened her eyes and found herself pointing towards an endless white field.

"Okay, here goes nothing…" With a determined look on her face, she sheathed Shimmering Rose, and used Petal Burst to run across the field, looking for something, anything, to lead her to her next destination.

Living in Dream Land was an experience, putting it bluntly. Sure, the people were nice, the weather is almost always perfect, and the food is simply divine. But, there was also the occasional cosmic horror, corrupted deities, doomsday cults, and anything else in between. Other than that, Dream Land, and by extension Planet Pop Star is a solid eight, out of ten in her book.

It's just that the last two points always have that one single thing. Something in the fine print that can go disastrously wrong as to sour your own experience.

In Susie's case, it was the, not one, but two interdimensional portals that isekai'd all of them to another dimension.

The Lost World was alright in some cases. The local fauna were cute and friendly. Once Kirby defeated Fecto Elfilis, they let her take samples and conduct experiments on the land, and the history behind ID-F86 and the society that lived here intrigued her. She wanted to learn more, reverse engineer the technology the people created, and use that to improve her late father's company.

And then there was this interdimensional hop. She was stranded with the Beast Pack of all people, which was strange, since Susie was on Dream Land, and not the Forgotten World.

They really need to find another name for it; it's a mouthful. Ironic, since she doesn't have a mouth. Maybe they could call it Forgo Star? Terra Star?

Either way, her experience was far more pleasant in Forgo Star than wherever this speck of dust is.

Now Playing… White-Hot! (Kirby's Return to Dreamland)

With a powerful swing from her Transporter, she knocked large humanoid creatures into the air, one of them breaking through the trees as they went flying. Another humanoid tried to sneak up on her with an axe swing. Her mech easily caught it, plunked it from his hand, and drove its fist into the thing's face, more than likely breaking it's nose.

"Savages, the lot of them," Susie muttered darkly, spinning the arms around her mech rapidly. Behind her, Gorimondo tossed a handful of humanoids into their comrades, and grunted. She couldn't understand what he said, but she assumed he was telling her to pay attention and keep these fleshy things off of him. He was a rather large target. The Primal Awoofies did their best they could to defend their pseudo-leader, but without the benefit of opposable thumbs, they couldn't get away with much.

She pressed a button to activate the jet boosters on her mech, slamming into more humanoids. Whipping the arms forwards, she fired energy beams at the incoming raiders and blasting them kingdom come. Gorimondo dug his hands into the ground and pulled out a giant boulder, tossing it and driving them away.

In the middle of all of this, Susie managed to see a tiny sharp bush waddling its way over to them, ignoring the loud explosions, constant gunfire, and the occasional Wilhelm scream. How that exact scream exists on so many different star systems is beyond her.

She maneuvered her Transporter to the bristly purple bush and picked it up, which revealed itself to be a Jabhog. The hedgehog creature waved at her with a happy look in its eyes, and she waved back.

"What are you doing all the way back here? I thought the Jabhog unit was in the northern end of the forest," Susie asked, whipping her arm around to backhand another humanoid.

The Jabhog started chattering. The noise was unintelligible to her, so she placed it on the ground and gave it a stick. The Jabhog took the stick in its mouth and started drawing a pattern in the dust, one that looked like Kirby and a long thing with Meta Knight's mask on it. More than likely the Battleship Halberd.

"Reinforcements are coming?" Susie asked for clarification, and Jabhog nodded gleefully.

"Perfect. The sooner we get off this backwater planet, the better," Susie said, mainly to herself. The Jabhog pouted at her.

"No, I was not referring to your planet." The Jabhog seemed unconvinced, so Susie lightly patted it on the head to change its mind. "Regardless, these pests need to be taken care of. Do you mind?" The Jabhog shook its head and curled up into a sharp, purple ball. Then, Susie reared back her head and tossed it with all of her mech's might, causing the purple rodent to ping-pong off of the trees and crashing into nearby native lifeforms.

Gorimondo grunted at her again while Susie looked at her handiwork. "Oh, quite you. It's great stress relief, and somewhat fun," She said to the punk-rock gorilla. He crossed his arms and thought about it for a moment. When one humanoid came close, he raised his fist and slammed him into the ground.

She was right. This is fun.

White-Hot! - Fade Out

Suddenly, a large earthquake ripped through the land, sending cracks and creating fissures all over the forests. Gorimondo nearly lost balance and fell on top of Suzie, but he was able to keep himself steady by driving his fists into the ground.

Susie tapped a button on the side of her helmet, causing the visor to slide out.

"How strange… Magical readings? And they're fairly large as well." Gorimondo grunted out a question. From what Susie explained earlier, this planet doesn't have a lot of magic, so why are there suddenly large readings of the stuff?

"It's possible that this world follows 'chosen one' rules. I'll have to learn more to be sure, though." She was brought out of her thoughts by another sudden earthquake. Almost immediately, the temperature dropped significantly, and in the sky, she could see massive icicles, easily the size of Gorimondo, being created out of thin air. They shot downwards at the speed of a bullet, only for them to shatter against the force of… something.

Enhancing the camera feed of her visor, Susie was able to see a humanoid with dark clothing, long hair, and a white mask. She seemed to be the source of the magic, if her readings were anything to go by. She flew through the air, extending one hand to create a ramp of ice, and using it to change her trajectory. The next second, Kirby came flying through the ramp.

Snow Bowl Kirby she realized, based on the snowflake design and ice cream swirl. A Super Copy Ability.

Susie stifled a laugh underneath her hand. Whoever he's fighting never had a chance of winning, but now? Those microscopic chances suddenly became even smaller than subatomic.

"Now, where were we? These natives need to be taught manners!" Susie turned her Transporter around and began charging up the blasters in its hands. Gorimondo landed behind her, and started pounding its chest. He grabbed the nearest blunt object he could find, in this case an uprooted tree, and slung it over his shoulder like a club.
