"Where are we?" Katie asked when the car stopped.

"Helena baby. We going to see Grandpa." Beth told her getting out of the car when the door was opened for her. She went around to the other side helping Katie. "Hold my hand." She told her.

Beth and Katie walked up to the Governor's office where John was waiting on the steps outside.

"Grandpa?" John turned around hearing Katie's voice. Beth let go of her hand as John put his arms out for her catching her. He threw her in the air before giving her a cuddle.

"Oh I've missed you." John said. "Hi Beth." He kissed her cheek before leading her inside.

"You're not home anymore." Katie told him.

"No I'm not. Are you looking after the place?"

"Yeah we look after everyone. And I don't mind the horses so much anymore. Do they have horses here? Can we pat them? Grandpa, why are we in the city? Are you coming home?" She fired her questions.

"Take a breath Katie." Beth said as her heels clacked against the floor.

John laughed. "It's all right. Are you here for the whole weekend?" He directed the question at Beth.

"I told you we would help." Beth said. "Let's get to work." Beth entered the office they were using meeting Lynelle inside. She set Katie up with a colouring book as the three discussed their plans.

"Alright, should be break for lunch before we hit the road?" Lynelle suggested.

"I'm hungry." Katie complained.

"Well that's decided then." John said standing up. Beth collected her handbag and Katie's belongings. The trio minus Lynelle walked to a nearby café for coffee and a sandwich.

"How is everything at home Beth?"

"It's fine Dad. Rip and Kayce are handling it." Beth told him. John nodded. He didn't want to be running for Governor and was only doing it to stop Jamie ruining the family. "We will be gone Sunday Dad, it's Rip's birthday on Sunday."

Katie turned to look at Beth. "Again!"

"What do you mean?" Beth asked.

"I forgot! I don't have a present."

"We will get him one today Katie." Beth told her wiping the sauce off the corner of her mouth. They all finished their meal before Lynelle entered the café.

"Are you coming too?" Katie asked her as they all got out of the booth.

"I am, if that's ok with you."

Katie thought about it before nodding and reaching for Lynelle's hand. She looked at John and then Beth trying to read their faces.

"Looks like she likes you Lynelle." John commented as they left. Lynelle tried to make conversation with Katie about all the things she thought she might like on the way to their next campaign spot.

They pulled in to a hotel and went to their rooms to freshen up. Beth changed Katie in to a light pink long sleeve pleated dress with her brown boots and navy coat. She got dressed in her own pant suit and took her hair out.

'Why do I have to wear this dress." Katie asked.

"Grandpa is giving a special speech so we need to look nice baby girl."

"This one tickles." Katie told her. Beth knew if she acknowledged it, it would turn in to a battle to get her to wear it. Thankfully John knocked on the door letting them know it was time to go.

The rally was around the corner from the hotel and they had decided it would look best if they walked there to show they were normal people and relatable.

"It's busy." Katie said looking up at all the adults on the sidewalk, walking in the same direction as them. She was confused why some people would stop and talk to her Grandpa and all the cameras. Beth was keeping a close eye on her to make sure she didn't get too overwhelmed or lost amongst everyone.

"S'cuse me Grandpa." Katie said tugging on his suit jacket sleeve. He looked down at her. "Are we nearly there?" She asked not making eye contact.

"Nearly." John told her, she nodded. He held his hands out and Katie put her arms out to be picked up. He carried her the rest on the way on his hip as she rested her head on his shoulder. The Dutton adults were aware that people were looking and taking photos but made sure no one got too close.

A stage was set up and security directed John and Lynelle to the stairs.

"You stay with your Mama here." John whispered to Katie kissing her head and trying to pass her off.

"Why can't I come?"

"Granddaughter, I've got to talk to all these people and it won't be fun for you but then we can hang out." Katie didn't look convinced at John's explanation but went to Beth anyway. Beth put her down, crouching down to her height to straighten her dress and jacket before standing off to the side whilst John spoke. The cheers were loud at the end of the speech as John waved and flashes of cameras went off.

By this point Katie had had enough and was jumping around. Beth tried to calm her down but let her go in the end.

"Do you want to call your Dad later?" Beth asked as John and Lynelle came off stage. Katie nodded at her.

"Get me out of here Beth." John said taking Katie's hand in his own. When Beth walked the sea of people parted making way for her.

"Should we find a park granddaughter?"

"Are you gonna come too?" Katie asked him.

"Of course." John felt like that he had missed so much of her growing in three weeks and hated to think what he could miss in four years if he wins.

Beth and Lynelle sat on the bench at the park as John and Katie chased each other around.

"You know he talks about you all a lot but he talks about your girl the most." Lynelle said to Beth who nodded. "He's going to struggle without you all and the ranch in office."

"I know but there is no other option." Beth told her watching Katie jump off the play equipment before bringing her jacket over. John came and sat down next to them both.

"Thank you for coming Beth and for bringing her." John said.

Beth's phone started ringing with a photo of Rip on the screen. She stood up and touched John's shoulder, "you are welcome Daddy." She called Katie over and answered the phone.

"That girl has definitely softened her John. And you." Lynelle said.

"Definitely do not tell her that Lynelle." John chuckled. "You're right, until something happens to her then Beth is worse than ever."

"That's just being a parent John."

"Katie it's your Dad." Beth said waving the phone.

"Hello?" Katie said shyly into the phone Beth held to her ear.

"Hi cowgirl. Are you having fun?"

"Uh-huh. Are you coming?"

"No baby, I'm looking after the ranch." He told her.

"Oh. There were lots of people today and they clapped for Grandpa and cameras too." Katie told him. Beth grimaced a bit wondering what Rip would think.

"I'm glad you're having fun with your Mama. Is she there?"

Katie pushed Beth's hand away, "he wants you." She told her.

"Hi baby."

"Beth. Cameras." Was all Rip said.

"Rip she was fine. I've had my eye on her the entire time and Dad has not let go of her since she got here."

"Ok."

"I'm just as protective as you Rip. Especially lately."

"I know Beth. Anyway you'll both be back here tomorrow."

"We will. Now I love you, stop stressing and we will see you at home." She said hanging up.

Katie played by herself in the sandpit before coming over to Beth looking tired. She brushed the sand off her dress before putting Katie's hair up in to a pony tail. John and Lynelle were off walking hand in hand amongst the tree when Katie asked "Is that Grandpa's girlfriend?"

"You'll have to ask him honey." Beth told her. "You and I are going shopping anyway." They waved at John and Lynelle before Beth gestured that they were going.

In town Beth walked with Katie beside her up and down the shops. They entered a gift shop and looked around.

"See if you can find some things Daddy might like." Beth told her, letting her wander around. She followed behind her a few paces in case she couldn't reach something.

Katie picked up gloves similar to what Rip had. She looked at Beth questioning if it was a good idea.

"They look great baby. It says here you can get something stamped on them like a name." Katie nodded giving them to Beth. She picked up a colourful bracelet next giving it to Beth.

"Dadda needs some colour sometimes." Beth laughed knowing Rip would turn his nose up at it initially but wear it because Katie got it for him.

"He'll love it. Let's get these stamped." Beth took the gloves to the counter paying for everything and requesting the year be stamped in to them as well as "R-W". The man behind the counter boxed everything up giving it to Beth.

Beth managed to get Katie to have a nap whilst she worked before dinner with her Dad that night.

Katie obsessed with John barely touched her food until Beth got stern with her, too busy chatting to him.
