Chapter 3

A couple months later finds Naruto and crew making their way to a town for more clothes for the kids. They had an all-against-all battle a few days ago and had burnt, cut, ripped, and/or some other type of damage to everyone's clothes.

"I'm sorry ni-san. I should have held back a little." Wendy apologized for the third time in the last five minutes.

"Wendy. It's okay. Besides I felt you all needed new clothes anyway and while we are here you can all pick out a weapon or two and I can get you stronger clothes."

Wendy nodded her head and fell behind him again to talk to her siblings. Natsu and Sting were arguing about who they thought won the battle and Gajeel had just interrupted the conversation and said that it was obvious that he won. Wendy and Rogue were talking about what weapon they were going to get and what weapon would suit whom. All of them were talking quietly enough they probably thought that Naruto couldn't hear them, so he was about to pull his favorite trick.

"Natsu. Gajeel. Sting. Stop fighting and I swear Natsu if you light that fist you are holding up I will have you fight me one on one after we leave town." Naruto turned his head to look behind him slightly to give what Natsu had dubbed his "dad glare". Happy with how the trio froze and quit fighting he turned around and smiled. A wider smile came across his face as he heard Nastu mumble, "How does he always know?"

It only took a few more minutes to reach town after that. He stopped right before the entrance and turned to his group. "All right, we are here. First we will stop at the clothes store so get better clothes, then we will get something to eat. No Natsu you can't eat all you want to. Then, we will head to the weapon store, Gajeel, don't eat the weapons, and a weapon will choose you."

It was Rogue that spoke, "Choose us?"

"Yes, the weapon chooses you. You don't choose it." Naruto responded and he unsealed his mother's blade that had become his. Its name was Phoenix because of its deep red color. The Katana had been by his side from the middle of the war onward and he cherished it more than almost any other item in his possession. There were only about two things that he could ever cherish more. His head band from Kohana and an album of pictures from every person he had ever gotten close to and the only "family picture" he had of his parents and him. It was a picture of Minato and a very pregnant Kushina with the widest smiles on their faces. "This katana belonged to my mother and it made her feared all across my world. Many of my foes would recognize the blade as I pulled it out and would run; that's how powerful she was."

"She sounds amazing." He had never told any of the kids about his past so it was no surprise to him when Sting continued his thought, "What else did she do?"

Naruto gave them all a sad smile, "That's about all I know about her." The fact that everyone who could have ever told him even a little about her was dead went unsaid. "I do know she had the most beautiful long, straight bright red hair and a temper that was hard to match. I did get told I have her personality."

Everyone was silent for a while. The kids were trying to imagine this person that had just been described to them while Naruto thought of the brief time he had with her in his mind. "Anyway, we should get going so we can be done and gone before nightfall." The kids followed Naruto as he led them into town and to the nearest clothes store.

"Hello there. Come on in and look around." To this day Naruto was still not used to people welcoming him into their stores. It had been thousands of years since he was beaten for looking in a shop's window, but he couldn't bring himself to trust any store keeper.

"Go look around and call me over if you find anything you guys like." Naruto told the kids as they separated and to look through the selections.

"Your family traveling or something?" The shopekeep asked him and Naruto had half a mind to ignore him, but he didn't want to be rude. Being rude just made it hurt worse.

"You could say that. We are more wanderer than anything." Naruto answered with a tense smile.

"Why are their clothes so bad now?" The shopkeeper raised one eyebrow at him questionaly.

"We got into a bandit attack along the road here. Besides that the kids needed more clothes." Naruto answered while searching for his kids. He could only see Rogue in front of him; the other kids were blocked by the clothes. "I should check on the kids." Naruto tried to leave the conversation to go search the store for his kids, but he was grabbed by the arm by the store keeper.

"I saw the bruises on those kids. I can't tell if you are telling the truth or if you are a human trafficker, but I don't care. You are staying here until the police can confirm your story with the kids." The storekeeper tightened his grip on Naruto as he explained what was happening. Naruto on the other hand was panicking. At that moment he wasn't in that store with his kids. He was five and back in his village. The village was grabbing his arm too tightly. He knew what was going to happen next. He was going to be dragged somewhere and beat until he couldn't move. He couldn't go through that again. It always hurt so badly and sometimes he was granted the mercy of death only to be revived and cast back into a world of pain and darkness.

Wendy came around the corner just in time to see Naruto shut down. "What are you doing to him?" She screamed as she dropped the clothes she was holding and ran to Naruto's side.

"I saw your bruises young lady and just wanted to make sure you weren't in a human trafficking situation." The shopkeeper explained as he kept his grip on Naruto.

In a different situation Wendy would have been honored to have this man looking after her family, but right now he was causing one of them pain and that was unacceptable. "Let go of my Ni-san." She said with venom leaking into her voice. The shopkeeper let Naruto go immediately and he fell lifeless to his knees before Wendy caught him. His empty eyes staring at ghosts that wouldn't stop haunting him. Hearing the commotion the others came running and abandoned their clothes as well once they saw the scene.

"What happened Wnedy?" Rogue asked, breaking all of them out of their blind panic.

"The shopkeeper grabbing his arm must have triggered some trauma. Not a small trauma either. It's big enough to pull him back in, so I can only assume it's really bad." Wendy said in a rush while trying to get Naruto to focus on her with no success.

—-Naruto POV—-

Why was nothing happening? There was no pain. Was it all a joke? There was no way that the shopkeep would let him get away. That man had hated him since day one and had made it clear that if he ever stepped into his shop it would be the last shop he would ever step into. Suddenly the world was filled with pain and darkness as something was poured into his eyes. It hurt so badly. Why was the world on fire? Why him?

Wendy started to yell as Naruto started to fight her and make pained wimpers. The sound broke all of their hearts and they knew Naruto wouldn't want anyone else to see him this way.

"We have to get him out of here." Sting told the others as he grabbed Naruto's legs and Gadjeel grabbed his torso. Wendy stood nearby trying to help his pain with her magic, Rogue kept hand free to help the ones carrying him if needed while his other hand dragged Natsu along with them as he glared a hole into the shopkeeper's head.

"If I ever see you again…" Natsu started but left the last half unsaid. The point was made anyway and the shopkeeper hid behind his counter as the group made their way out of the store.

They made a beeline for the forest while Naruto struggled against them begging them to stop and let him go. "I swear I didn't do anything wrong. I will never come back here again." Naruto begged and pleaded to his invisible foe as the groups' hearts continued to break. They didn't know much about his life and now it was starting to make sense why he didn't tell them anything about his past. By his begs and struggles they could tell this wasn't the first time something like this had happened to him and it was bad enough to stick with him through hundreds of years.

Finally they reached the end of the town and rushed into the forest far enough to be out of any traveling party's way. Rogue and Gajeel gently laid Naruto down on the sleeping bag that Wendy had laid out as Natsu went to collect firewood and Rogue went to hunt for food. Everyone was silent as they went about their jobs and Wendy ran another diagnostics on Naruto, listening to his cries and pleas.

—-Naruto POV—-

The villagers had grabbed him and were taking him somewhere. His pleas to stop and let him go fell on death ears. No one would listen to his pleas or cries for help. They all wanted to see him in pain, see him sacred, see him killed. He was going to die and no one would care. They would all be happy he was dead. Why did they all hate him? Why couldn't they see he was just a kid? He was only three. He wasn't even old enough to be in school. What did he do? They stopped and laid him down on the ground. He fought harder and stronger. He didn't want to be beaten again. He wouldn't live. He couldn't even see. Why was life so cruel to him?

—-—-

After what seemed to be hours Naruto's cries started to fade until they were no more. He had gone completely still and hadn't moved in a while, but he was breathing. Wendy told everyone that there was nothing they could do for him but wait the terror out and be there for him when he woke up. None of the kids were happy about it, but they would do all they could to help him after the ordeal and hopefully at some point they would get some answers.

"This sucks." Natsu complained for the fifth time in an hour.

"I know, but there's nothing more we can do. He's comfortable physically and we'll be here for him when he wakes up. That's about all we can do." Gajeel responded as he layed back to watch the stars like Naruto showed them. He could name some of the constellations that Naruto had shown them, but other than that he could only watch the beautiful stars while thinking of a conversion Naruto and him had a while back.

He was staring at the night sky looking at the stars when Naruto sat down beside him.

"What cha' thinking of?" Naruto had asked him as he continued to look at the stars with him.

"What makes you think I'm thinking of anything at all?" Gajeel had questioned him back then trying to get him to leave, but it hadn't worked.

"Because a really important person once told me that anytime he was thinking about something important he would look at the clouds or stars to help him think." Naruto had gained his attention with that. He never talked about his past and Gajeel wanted to know more. Lucky Naruto continued, "He also told me that when we look at the stars we are looking at the past. Light doesn't travel fast enough for us to be able to see what is actually happening in real time, so some star we are looking at could have died long ago and we don't even know it. That's the truth of life too. You never know when it's going to end and you don't want to keep looking at the past, so you live in the present and for the future." Naruto turned to look at him, "So do what you want and damn everyone who tries to stop you without good reason. If it turns out bad, so be it, but if it turns out good, or even great, that's an experience you will never forget." They had sat there watching the stars for a few more hours until Gajeel had fallen asleep. The next morning he had woken up in his tent with a clear mind.

He couldn't even remember what he was trying to decide on that night, but Naruto's words had always stuck with him. Sometimes he was childish enough to forget that he was well over a thousand years old, but it was in times of wisdom that Gajeel remembered how lucky he was to have Naruto by his side. He looked away from the fire and started to listen to the hushed conversations happening while turning to look at the tent Naruto was currently sleeping in. All of them were lucky to have him. He was truly something else.
