Chapter 4: Regrets

Kane and Daniel made it back to the hospital in less then an hour. Storming through people as Kane zeroed in on the receptionist. "Oh, hello again sir, you sure left in a hurry, is everything okay?" she asked.

"I'm fine, I was told a woman matching my wife's description was here," Kane explained trying to stay as patient as possible. Trying with all his might not to go bursting down the halls screaming Sam's name until he found her.

"Okay um what is your wife's name?" asked the receptionist.

"Samantha Jacobs," he told her, biting his lip to stay calm. His fingers tapping on the table as he tried not to fidget around.

"Ah yes, she was brought in about an hour ago, room 202," the receptionist told him.

"Can I go see her?" Kane asked releasing a breath he was holding. Relief washing over him as a smile was on his face. Sam was here, she was safe, and soon he could see her, making sure no one would harm her or their child.

"I'll have to check with the doctor please have a seat," she said reaching for the phone. Kane wanted to argue, yet Daniel pulled him away.

"Of course, thank you ma'am," Daniel said pulling Kane away to a set of chairs.

"Hey Daniel, Kane, glad you two showed up," Roman said. He and Dean appeared, looking tired yet calm.

"Heard you two found Sam," Kane said as suspicion took him. "Funny I had a match against Seth, my wife gets abducted, then a few hours later you two happen to find her. That's…very convenient wouldn't you say?' he asked suspiciously.

"Hey, we didn't abduct her Kane, we saved her from some asshole, who was pretending to be you. Instead of accusing us, a thank you would be nice," Dean barked.

"Besides we wouldn't do anything like that even for Seth. He betrayed us, why would we do him any favors? Sam's always been cool with us, we have no interest in harming her," Roman told him firmly.

"And I am just supposed to believe you?" Kane hissed.

"We don't care what you believe or don't believe. All we did was try and get a drink after work. Found Sam in the pouring rain, scared out of her mind, as some psycho was chasing her. Dean and I helped her out, took her to the hospital and the guy was arrested. You're welcome," Roman said crossing his arms.

"Do you guys know who took her?" Kane asked.

"Nope, the guy wore a mask, never saw his face. I knocked him out, Dean called the ambulance, I called the cops. We didn't see him after that," Roman explained. Kane remained silent unsure if this was the truth or a lie to cover up Sam's abduction. "Anyways, we will be leaving, glad Sam's okay," Roman added.

"Yeah, hope Sam feels better," Dean added as the two made their leave.

"Kane, you can't keep accusing everyone around you," Daniel told him.

"I will find out who kidnapped my wife, and when I do, I will make them pay," Kane hissed glaring at him. His stomach growled, as he needed food.

"Hey man, go grab some food, I'll wait here for the doctor," Daniel offered.

"I am not leaving till I see Sam," Kane argued.

"You need to eat, you are no good to Sam, if you pass out from hunger. "I promise to come get you when the doctor shows up. Now go get some food, I am not asking," Daniel argued back as he gave Kane a ten-dollar bill. Kane grabbed the money standing up towering over him.

"The second the doctors comes," he began.

"I promise to come get you," Daniel vowed firmly. He nodded and headed to the cafeteria, hoping Sam and their baby was okay. Buying a sandwich and some water, Kane ate silently his mind wandering back through time.

He was always a monster, wearing a mask to hide his face. Used as a weapon against the Undertaker, he enjoyed every minute of it. The fearful looks, the whispers, as he walked down to the arena. His flames erupting as one by one, he collected his own victims. A dreadful reputation of destruction and carnage followed him in his wake. It wasn't until he met Torrie, he felt less of a monster. She was pretty and sweet at times, Kane for a brief, few moments felt he found someone who could love both man and monster. However, not only did she betray him, but his former partner XPAC also, betrayed him. Anger and despair fueled him as he got his revenge on the ones who hurt him.

From then on Kane, didn't fool around with stupid things like love. Love was for mortal men and women; fear and destruction were made for monsters like him. Love made him weak, he refused to be that way again. However, his one-night stand with Lita, changed everything.

Like before Kane just wanted to cause destruction and pain to others. Make them suffer like he suffered. When he learned Lita was pregnant, he changed his mind. Now he was going to have what he always wanted, a family. A beautiful loving wife and a child he would raise, who would love him. Yet, with Matt Hardy in the picture made things difficult. Kane stalked and hounded Lita, till that fateful match between him and Matt. When he won, his heart soared, his dream of having a family was in his grasp.

Lita didn't feel the same way about him. Their short marriage was nothing but defying each other, arguments, and Lita's disdainful glares at him. The only time they could get along was when it came to the baby.

Lita was brushing her hair as Kane burst in. "Guess knocking isn't an option with you," she hissed.

"Oh, what is wrong precious, aren't you happy to see your loving husband?" Kane asked a smug smirk on his face.

"I'd be happy to see you get hit by a truck," she hissed back glaring at him.

"Now, now, sweetheart, let's not fight in front of the baby," he said motioning to her stomach.

"Go to hell," Lita snapped.

"My, my such foul language for a mother to be," Kane told her shaking his head in disapproval.

"What…do…you…want?" Lita asked glaring at him with such hatred.

"Just checking up on my little woman and child. Like, a good husband and father is supposed to do," he explained enjoying her distain. Lita got up quickly, about to yell some more. When she stopped a look of shock on her face.

"What's wrong?" he asked his smug look vanishing, as a tiny bit of concern entered his black heart.

"I…I think I felt the baby kick," Lita said gently. Her face softening as she took his hand, placing it on her stomach. "Just wait," she told him softly. Sure enough, Kane felt a slight movement from Lita's belly.

"Oh my god, was that our baby?" he asked a genuine smile on his face. He was about to wrap his arm around Lita's waist. Yet, she pushed him away, the moment clearly over.

"Well, I and the baby are fine. You can go now," Lita said her cold tone returning.

"Yeah, well stay hydrated or whatever," Kane mumbled as he left the room.

His relationship with Lita, wasn't the best, but the baby seemed to help them work together, even for the briefest of moments. However, life was cruel to him, after Lita cost him a match, he was beyond angry. He needed to hurt someone, he couldn't hurt Lita, because of the baby. Yet, he needed to relieve his anger and frustrations. When Eric made that match with him and Snitsky, Kane was happy to have a human punching bag.

Once again Lita had to intervene, maybe she just enjoyed defying him. Maybe, she was tired of seeing people get hurt, he never knew. All he did know was when he was in the ring with her. He wanted to slap her yet, the baby made him keep his temper under check. When he felt the chair hit him, causing him to fall onto Lita, his heart broke, hearing her yell out in pain. Horror and remorse fueled him, as he checked on her, screaming at everyone and anyone to help Lita. Assuring her and the baby would be fine.

When he learned that Lita lost the baby, everything in him died, his son was dead, and he never got a chance to see the kid. The one thin thread keeping him and Lita from constantly being at each other's throats was gone. In their time of grief, he stupidly believed he and Lita could work as a couple. She seemed to want revenge for the death of their child. Snitsky claimed it was an accident, not realizing Lita was pregnant, so the law couldn't really do anything. Yet, Kane could beat the living day lights out of him. Yet, like Torrie Lita betrayed him by being with Edge, even saying she was happy to no longer carry Kane's demon spawn.

Looking back, maybe if Kane just let Lita be with Matt, he could ask to see the kid on the weekends or whatever. He didn't have much of a father figure, he refused to be a dead-beat dad as well. By forcing Lita to marry him, he lost the baby as well as her. Even he, being a monster had regrets. When he met Sam, his life changed once again forever.

Some time ago

It all started with Kelly Kelly and that award they presented. When she said love was a beautiful thing, smiling right at him. In his demented mind, he knew she was trying to tell him something. Though, he was trying to take things slow, he was tired of getting hurt.

Kelly was done with her match yet was being attacked, he came out causing her attackers to run, leaving her alone in the ring. He knelt down to her offering his hand to her to help her up. Her eyes wide with fear as she scrambled out of the ring, running far away from him. He followed needing to talk to her. Finding her cowering in the corner, he eyed her, "We need to talk," he said.

Please leave me alone," she begged, her body shaking fear all over her face. At that moment Sam came walking by unaware of the situation, as Kelly grabbed onto her. "Please, help me please," Kelly begged holding onto Sam for dear life.

"Whoa Kelly, what is the matter?" Sam asked looking concerned. Her attention turned towards Kane, yet unlike Kelly, a face full of fear. Sam gave him the warmest smile that melted his darkened heart. "Oh, hey Kane, how you been?" she asked.

Kane stood frozen for a second unable to speak, yet he managed to reply to her. "Hello Sam, I am fine, but I would like a private word with Kelly if you don't mind," he said politely. Normally he would threaten anyone who got in his way, yet those gentle chocolate brown eyes, made him feel so calm.

Sam's eyes widened as she looked embarrassed, again not really reading the situation. "Oh of course don't mind me, I'll just leave you two alone," Sam said politely as she tried to pry Kelly off her.

"No, please don't leave me alone with him, please!" Kelly begged gripping onto Sam tighter.

"Easy Kelly, he just wants to talk, he won' hurt you" Sam assured her trying to loosen Kelly's grip. Kane hid his smile, Sam didn't know about his monstrous nature, she just saw a man who wanted to talk to a girl.

"I will only talk to him if you come with me," Kelly said firmly. A blush formed on Sam's face as she looked at Kelly then at him.

She is so cute when she blushes, Kane thought.

"Um Kelly, I really don't think Kane wants me to come along. Or do you care?" Sam asked now addressing him. The blush on her face, as she clearly didn't want to interrupt some moment between him and Kelly.

Kane let out a sigh, seeing as there was only one way to get Kelly to come along with him. "If I can still get an honest answer out of her, then okay you can come," he said gently. Kelly looked relieved as Sam and her were led by Kane to a darkened room. She sat in a chair, as Sam stood by the wall, doing her best to not bother the two.

Kane sat down staring at Kelly, now he would get his answer. He smiled at her as he asked, "Do you remember when you said love is a beautiful thing, and you smiled at me?" Kelly's face paled yet she nodded her head yes. His smile grew as he leaned a bit closer, her perfume entering his nostrils. "You were trying to tell me something weren't you?" he asked.

"I was just presenting an award, and besides I only said that because I heard Sam say it," Kelly said nervously.

Upon hearing her name Sam smiled as Kane eyed her, a bit stunned by Kelly's words. Did Sam really say that? Or was Kelly just using Sam to escape him and his questions?

"Sam, can you tell me what you meant by that? I just want an honest answer," Kane told her. Kelly realizing the Big Red Machine, was no longer paying attention to her, quickly got up and left the room. Leaving Sam all alone with Kane.

Sam sat down in the chair Kelly once sat, crossing her legs as she looked at Kane. ""When I said that I was thinking about my folks who were married for a long time and then some divas were mentioning their significant others and I said that I thought you had a sexy smile", she said as a blushed formed on her face. Kane couldn't believe his ears Sam just said he had a sexy smile. He looked hard at her face and there was no trace of deception her fear just the truth. She believed he had a sexy smile, she said it with a straight face. It was beyond shocking for him.

"Well, thank you I am flattered by that," Kane told her.

Oh, you are welcome just don't get a big head okay," Sam joked as she smiled at him. His heart raced upon seeing her smile, the way her eyes lit up.

"I won't," he said as he let out a genuine laugh. Not one of his mild angry laughs, or his demonic laugh, an actual laugh. Sam got up and headed towards the door. "Hey Sam, thanks for being honest with me," he told her.

She turned to him and said, "No problem". "Why wouldn't I be honest with you?" she asked.

"Not many people are, many people hurt me over the years," he admitted his smile fading.

"I'm sorry to hear that, um may I ask why people hurt you?" she asked sitting back down.

"I am a monster, what other reason is there?" Kane asked.

"Well, I heard you enjoy hurting people is that true?" Sam asked.

"Course I love hurting people, I suffer all the time, people should suffer as well," he explained.

"With that way of thinking, you will always get hurt Kane," she said firmly. He was taken aback by this statement.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"If all you do is hurt people and cause destruction, no one will ever want to show you any type of kindness. You can be a monster in the ring, but maybe a man outside the ring," she suggested. His mouth nearly dropped at her statement, no one was brave enough to talk to him like that. "Might even help you with your love life," she added.

"You think I need help?" he asked her, his voice hardening.

"Just saying Kelly, didn't seem super thrilled to be here, talking to you. You are a bit intimidating, maybe try toning it down a bit," she suggested.

"You don't seem to have a problem talking to me," he informed her.

"I have no reason to fear you. The times we met, you got me my hat back, even caught me when I fell, and I was your tag team partner in a match. So, my interactions with you, haven't made me fear you," Sam explained.

"That makes sense, so I was nice to you, so that is why you offered to be my partner?" he asked.

"That and I was tired of Miz running his mouth. The guy has an ego the size of Greenland," Sam said.

"Yeah, he never shuts up," Kane admitted.

"Look Kane, I think you are a cool guy, so allow me to be your friend," Sam said.

"You, you want to be my friend?" Kane asked in disbelief.

"Yeah, you seem cool and well it is nice to have friends. Maybe I can be your girl to guy translator. So, the next time you want to talk to a girl, she won't scream and run away," Sam suggested, a sly smile on her face.

Kane shook his head, a sly smile on his face. "Fair point, guess it couldn't hurt," he admitted. His heart seemed lighter, talking to Sam seemed so easy to him, maybe having a friend would be good for him.

Kane finished off his sandwich, remembering what led to him falling for Sam. She was like an angel, sweet, beautiful, yet did stand up for herself even against him at times. A tear rolled down his face as he remembered, how he clipped her wings, sending her back to earth far away from him.

Some time ago

It all started with Del Rio's attacks on him. The Mexican aristocrat attacked him in the back with a chair. He remembered how his back felt when it met with that steel chair. "Get away from him!" Sam shouted a bat in her hands. She swung it hard connecting it with Del Rio's face.

"My face, my beautiful face, you are dead!" Rio growled, as he ran away.

"Kane, honey, are you okay?" Sam asked, helping him to his feet.

"I've been better," he told her.

"Here, let's get you to the nurse," Sam said, placing his arm around her, trying to offer him support. They stumbled to the nurse's station as Kane was being looked at. Kane was in the clear as they headed towards the parking garage, when two bright headlights appeared before them. A roar of an engine as someone was racing at them. "Look out!" Sam said pushing Kane to the side, yet the vehicle was heading towards her.

"SAM!" Kane yelled as everything seemed to slow down. Sam ran at the vehicle, managing to get on the hood as she ran up the car, barely managing to jump off the bumper. She stumbled but avoided being ran over. Del Rio's head poked out realizing he missed both targets, started screaming in Spanish, and drove away. "Are you okay?" Kane asked rushing over to her.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," Sam assured him. His heart nearly stopped upon seeing Sam almost get hit and he didn't do anything to save her. Anger and guilt filled him, as he never felt more like a monster then he did right now. Sam was an angel and there was only one thing to do with an angel.

On the night Sam's contract was to expire, Kane led her to the room, where they first talked. Her excited face greeted him, as a package was in her hands. "Hey babe, good news I was offered a full contract from both Smackdown and Raw, I get to choose next Monday night. Guess, you'll be stuck with me even longer," she teased.

"I don't want you on Raw or Smack down," he told her coldly.

"What do you mean?" Sam asked looking confused.

"I mean you are a weakness, Sam; I never want to see you again. It was your fault I couldn't beat Del Rio when he jumped me," Kane stated.

"Hey, I helped you out!" Sam argued looking hurt.

"I never asked for your help!" he yelled. "I am a monster, I don't have time for some country hick that was nothing more then a fling," he stated.

Tears filled up Sam's eyes, as she stared at him, unable to believe her ears. "Kane…. you don't mean that," she said her voice cracking. At that moment he wanted to grab her in his arms. Kiss her as hard as he could assuring her that he loved her and was beyond sorry. Yet, saying sorry wouldn't save her from getting ran over again, he had to make her hate him.

"Don't tell me what I mean, You, mean nothing to me, now go away, I never want to see you again!" he yelled.

"Fine you, big jerk I will leave!" Sam shouted angry flashing in her eyes as she threw his present at him. Tears streaming down her face as she stormed out of the room, the door slamming shut. Kane took a deep breath when she was gone.

"It was for her own good," he stated, yet seeing the package on the floor. He knelt to pick it up. It was a small tape that said happy anniversary. On the tape were clips of how he and Sam met, their first kiss and so on. Watching these old memories, he realized he never felt happier than he did when he was with Sam. He had to apologize and get her back.

The next day, he went to a flower shop and bought some sunflowers, Sam's favorite flower. Heading to the hotel room he knew she was in, he put the flowers behind his back and knocked on the door.

To his surprise Kelly opened the door as the familiar look of terror greeted him. "Um, Kane, wh-what are you doing here?" Kelly stammered yet trying to sound polite.

"I need to speak to Sam," he answered trying to look over her to see if Sam was in the room.

"Oh, well um, I am very sorry, but Sam is not here," Kelly said gently.

"Do you know where she is?" Kane asked.

"She went back home Kane," she told him.

"Back home, is she going to return to Raw? Her contract expired last night, she said next Monday she was going to sign a new contract either with Raw or Smackdown," Kane explained.

Kelly's eyes widened as she looked even more nervous. "I guess you haven't heard," she said.

"Heard what?" Kane asked trying to stay patient, yet he just wanted to push Kelly aside and look for Sam.

"Sam is not coming back to Raw or joining Smackdown, last night she called Mr. McMahon saying she didn't want to sign a new contract, and quit wrestling," Kelly informed him.

Kane's heart sank as his hand holding the flowers tightly, he heard the stems of the flowers breaking. "I, I see, thanks Kelly, have a good day," Kane told her dryly as he tossed the flowers into the trash and walked away.

That was his biggest regret letting Sam get away from him. He got a second chance at love when she returned to Raw, now he was going to make sure she didn't regret coming back to him.

"Kane, hey Kane," Daniel said snapping the monster out of his thoughts. He blinked looking up at Daniel. "The doctor said we can visit Sam, just a brief visit," he said gently. Kane nodded and immediately followed Daniel to Sam's room, the demon was eager to see his angel.
