What ever happened to the Boo Brothers?
Chapter 5: The Cajun Sasquatch
After the rather unpleasant encounter with Billy Bob and his sister, the gang soon went back into town.
They wanted to find more information on the so-called "Cajun Sasquatch" that has been causing trouble at the plantation. They went to the first place that Velma suggested.
The library.
The town's library was small, and lacking compared to a library that you'd find in the city. Normally, Velma would just go on her laptop to look up the information but the signal wasn't too good and they couldn't use any Wi-Fi here, so they had to settle for this.
Anyway, they were now at the library and after asking the librarian, they managed to find some books about the town, it's history and the so-called monster that was the only source of knowledge they found of use.
"Man, these books look like they're over 50 years old..."Daphne commented as she was looking over one.
"You would think they'd update..."Fred commented, and coughed a bit since some of these books are pretty dusty too.
"That would require them to put any effort and money for quality books..."Velma said, not impressed with this place as she kept looking over the books.
The brainy girl soon found what she was looking for in a book called "Beast of the Island" and gasped.
"Guys, I think I found something..."She said in a hushed tone, due to being in a library and the librarian having a strict rule about being quiet.
"What do you got?..."Fred asked, eager to learn.
Velma pointed to a picture of a large, creepy-looking monster and read along.
"The Cajun Sasquatch, also known as the Honey Island Swamp Monster, or La BĂȘte Noire in Cajun French, is a ape-like creature, similar to Bigfoot, that is said to haunt the Honey Island Swamp..."Velma said as she read the information.
"The Honey Island swamp? But why would it be here?..."Fred asked, not getting it.
"I'm not sure yet, but it says here that the creature is bipedal and seven feet tall, covered in gray fur and is stated to smell horribly..."She read, making a face.
"Must not be fond of taking baths..."Fred joked.
The girls sent him an unimpressed look and shook their heads.
"Someone had to say it, since Shaggy's not here..."Fred said, shrugging.
The girls ignored him and Velma kept reading.
"It says here that the creature has four toes on it's feet and and they are quite big...just like the footprints we saw at the plantation..."She said, getting suspicious. "It it stated to be covered in mud and has yellow reptile-like eyes..."She read.
"Jeepers, sounds like one nasty monster..."Daphne said.
"But it still doesn't explain why it's all the way here or why it's haunting the plantation..."Velma said.
"It's probably just some guys in a costume that are after the Colonel's treasure, like that imposter sheriff was..."Fred suggested.
"Or maybe the town's people just want to create publicity to this decaying town..."Velma theorized.
"Or maybe there's oil on Shaggy's land and they're trying to get it..."Fred said, since that's not so farfetched.
"Whatever the reason is, it's probably as petty as most of the reasons bad guys cause these mysteries..."Daphne said, since they were used to some crook dressing up as a monster for either money or something like that.
"Either way, we don't know the exact reasons yet..."Velma said, reading more information on the creature.
"Only one way to find out. We gotta go back and set a trap for this so-called swamp monster..."Fred said, with his "trap-making" face.
"Why am I not surprised that would be your idea?..."Daphne asked, since it was really predictable for Fred.
"KEEP IT DOWN, OUTSIDERS!..."The librarian said in an ironically loud tone.
"Oh, sorry ma'am..."Fred said, cringing by her harsh tone.
While Fred and Daphne apologized to the librarian, Velma gathered the books that she was about to check out and use for more research. However, her eyes landed on one book and saw the name.
"Feud of the Families: The Scroggins and The Beauregards..."Velma thought, curious.
She decided to check that book as well, as she felt that it might come in handy later. The group soon left the library and headed to their next destination.
Outside
Before heading back to the plantation, Fred decided it was best for them to gather material for the trap that they are gonna set.
It's just the usual stuff that they use to make traps. He figured it was best to purchase them since the plantation is really old and he wasn't sure if the stuff there would work too well due to either being too old or worn out.
"Alright gang, let's split up. Daphne, you go buy the rope for the snare. Velma, you see if you can find some nets and paint for camouflage. I'll try and see if I can find a cage, or at least enough material to make one. After that, we'll meet up at the Beauregard place ASAP..."Fred said.
"On it, Freddy..."Daphne said, ready to do so.
The three soon split up and went to find and make their respective purchases for the trap.
A little later
Fred managed to quickly find what he was looking for at the local general store.
After making his purchases, was on his way back to the plantation. He couldn't find a cage big enough for a supposed 7 foot tall monster, so he had to settle for buying the material to make a make-shift cage or something similar to trap the beast.
"I hope that the girls managed to find the rest of the stuff..."He said as he carried his purchases back to the plantation.
However, before he was even half-way there, someone saw him and called out to him.
"Howdy there, Freddy!~..."Was heard.
Fred turned around and soon saw that it was Sadie Mae Scroggins, the girl who claims to be in love with Shaggy and is acting a bit too friendly towards him for some reason.
"Oh, uh...Sadie Mae...uh, I didn't expect to run into you here..."He said.
"Yeah, small world..."Sadie Mae said with a giggle. "What's ya got there?..."She asked, as she noticed the items in his bag.
"Oh, uh...just...doing some shopping..."Fred said, not used to someone being so nosy about his trap-making.
"Whatever, that ain't so important. So, how's Shaggy? Did ya tell him that I've been missin' him?..."Sadie Mae asked in excitement as she clearly wanted to see him again.
Fred cringed and took a step back due to how...enthusiastic...she was being and tried to answer as best as he could.
"Uh...sorry Sadie Mae...Uh, like I said, Shaggy isn't here and I didn't exactly get a chance to pass the message yet..."Fred said, wanting to leave and also not hurt her feelings by telling her that Shaggy probably doesn't return her feelings, given his reaction from earlier.
"Shaggy was right about one thing, this girl is crazy. Crazy about him at least..."He thought, still wondering what exactly happened between them.
The hillbilly girl pouted but then perked up, which made Fred wary for some reason.
"Well, that's okay. I'm sure that he's been missin' me too. Anyway, Fred...I'se got someone here who's been dyin' to meet'cha..."Sadie Mae said as she sent a mischievous look and almost seemed playful for some reason.
Fred didn't feel comfortable by how this girl seemed to act familiar with him like they were old friends or something, especially since he met her today. He tried to speak up.
"Uh, I really don't have time for this, Sadie Mae. I gotta head back and-..."Fred said but was cut off by a loud voice.
"Cousin Sadie Mae! What y'all doin'?..."A feminine voice, slightly deeper than Sadie Mae's said and it got closer.
The blonde hillbilly smiled for some reason as she turned to Fred.
"She's here. Over here, cousin Debra-Sue!..."Sadie Mae called out in a loud voice, and even waved a bit.
Fred wondered what was going on as another woman joined the scene.
"Fred, these here in my cousin, Debra-Sue Scroggins. Debra-Sue, this here's Fred. He's Shaggy's pal and the guy I told y'all about..."Sadie Mae said, smiling widely.
Fred was stunned as he saw who approached them.
It was a hillbilly girl, much like Sadie Mae herself.
Like Sadie Mae, she was very pretty and dressed in tattered, but revealing clothes. She wore a green, almost bikini like top and purple short-shorts that showed off her long legs. She was tall, thin, with long curly red hair that had bangs that cover one of her green eye in a coy manner. She also had a pretty face with some freckles on her cheeks, as well as pouty lips that were in a playful grin right now.
She was attractive in an almost tomboyish sort of way, but she also had a really flirtatious look and a big grin on her face as she eyed Fred like a piece of meat.
"Whoowee! You was right, cousin Sadie Mae. He IS Cute!..."Debra-Sue said in a heavy southern accent, making it clear that she likes him.
"I knew y'all would like him, cuz..."Sadie Mae said with a giggle, happy to play match maker.
"Uh...I...uh..."Fred stammered, not sure what was going on here.
Debra-Sue was looking at him in a strange manner, while Sadie Mae giggled and seemed pleased with herself right now.
"I'll leave y'all alone to get acquainted. I'se got my own man to prepare for..."She said before winking at them, leaving Fred alone with Debra-Sue. "Tootles, y'all. I'se got to go write a lil' ole letter for Shaggy to express ma love. Have fun you two..."Sadie Mae said before leaving the area.
This left Fred alone with the attractive country girl and the blonde guy felt nervous.
Sure, Fred admitted that she was beautiful but now wasn't really the time or place to be set up on a date and he had a monster to find and trap. He didn't have time for this.
"Look...Debra...is it?..."Fred asked.
"Actually, everyone here calls me Debra-Sue, Handsome..."The woman corrected, in a flirty tone as she kept sending goo-goo eyes at Fred.
The blonde guy felt nervous, but cleared his throat and tried to reason with her.
"Uh, right...Listen, Debra-Sue...I don't know what Sadie Mae told you but-..."Fred was cut off as the country girl just grabbed on to his ascot and pulled him so close to her that their faces were mere inches away.
"Let's get to bein' acquainted, Cutie..."Debra-Sue said in a flirty way.
Fred gulped as he managed to pull his ascot free and step back. Debra-Sue saw this and giggled.
"Wow, yer sure a shy one. I like it, it's cute!..."Debra-Sue said, showing a coy look on her face.
Fred was getting REALLY nervous now.
This girl was attractive and seemed to be into him, but she's really bold and he didn't feel comfortable by her rather aggressive flirting and not respecting his personal space.
"I-I'm flattered but I have a job to do... well, not really job, it's more a hobby... a really time consuming hobby..."Fred said, sweating a bit.
"I can think of a new hobby for ya... me!..."She said as she wrapped her arm around his and Fred was shocked by how strong her grip was.
"Why don't I let'cha take me to see a nice picture show? We can watch a flick and get to know each other bettuh...in the dark..."Debra-Sue said in a hinting way as she fluttered her eye-lashes at him.
Fred gulped and lost his ability to think straight right now.
"I...uh...I..."He stammered, not sure how to get out of this as this girl clearly wouldn't take no for an answer.
Thankfully, his salvation came and in a form that he was kind of conflicted about.
"Uh, Freddy, what was you doing?..."An annoyed voice was heard.
The two turned around and saw that it was Daphne. She looked annoyed and had her arms crossed, as she how close the two are right now.
"Daphne!..."Fred gasped, looking relieved to see her.
Debra-Sue saw the other woman and frowned.
"Who's she suppose to be?!..."She thought, not liking her.
Fred managed to break free from her and ran to his female friend, happy to be freed from that cute but clingy girl.
"Daphne...hey..."He said, feeling awkward as he wasn't sure how to explain this.
Daphne still looked annoyed and crossed with him for some reason.
"Fred, who is that?..." She asked, tapping her foot.
Before Fred could answer, Sadie Mae's cousin marched up to her and got in her face.
"The name's Debra-Sue Scroggins. I'se Sadie Mae's cousin..."Debra-Sue said, arms crossed. "Who the heck are y'all suppose to be?..."She asked, with an unfriendly look on her face.
Daphne returned it.
"I'm Daphne Blake. I'm Fred's friend..."She declared.
"JUST a friend? You ain't his gal, are you?..."Debra-Sue asked in a suspicious tone.
Daphne frowned.
"No, I'm not. And even IF I was, what's it to you?..."She asked, already not liking this girl.
"Uh...you two...calm down...uh, Daphne...we still gotta go...uh...set things up at the plantation..."Fred reminded, really wanting to leave.
Daphne still frowned and nodded.
"You're right, Fred. We should go...together!..."She said, with some edge in her voice.
Debra-Sue frowned but still sent a flirtatious look to Fred.
"Well, I guess I'll be seein ya around, Freddy. We can see a picture show together when yer not so busy. Toodeloo, Cutie!~..."Debra-Sue said as she winked at him before she finally left.
Fred sighed, while Daphne glared at him.
Once the country girl was gone, Daphne decided to interrogate him.
"What was that about?..."Daphne asked, almost demanding.
Fred snapped out of it and turned to face her, trying to explain himself.
"Daphne, I was on my way back to the plantation but Sadie Mae came with her cousin and pretty much tried to set us up on a blind date. I tried to explain to Debra-Sue that I wasn't interested but she...well, she's pretty...bold...and seems to be as strong as her cousin..."Fred tried, not sure how else to describe what he just went through.
Daphne still looked annoyed at him for some reason.
"You sure? She was pretty close to you?..."She asked, frowning.
Anyone could tell that she was jealous but Fred was pretty dense and didn't pick that up yet. He just shook his head and tried to explain himself.
"I mean it. She's pretty, but she's not exactly my type..."Fred said, making Daphne raise a brow at that.
"Well, what is you're type?..."She asked, curious.
Fred seemed taken back by that and blushed a bit, Before he could answer, his phone suddenly started to ring.
It was Velma.
"Hello, Velma..."Fred said upon answering.
"Hey guys, where are you? I'm at the plantation already..."The brainy girl said.
"Oh, uh...me and Daphne are on our way right now..."Fred said, still a little taken back by what recently happened.
Daphne still frowned as Fred finished that phone call and turned to her.
"Come on, this trap isn't gonna set itself..."Fred reminded.
Daphne still frowned but sighed, knowing that they still had this mystery to solve.
"Okay..."She said, since mysteries don't solve themselves, though she still felt wary about that Debra-Sue girl from earlier.
"I don't know why...but I don't trust that girl..."She thought with suspicion and irritation, but decided to deal with that later.
The two mystery solvers soon went back to join Velma at the plantation and set up a trap for the monster. The two were still unaware that a pair of eyes were watching them from a distance in an almost predatory like manner.
Daphne and Fred weren't aware of that, as they just headed back to the plantation, to continue with this mystery.
