She sat by the stream, a box of black hair dye in her hands. No one knew she did this. Well, with the exception of her mother that is.

That's right.

Kagome Higurashi was not naturally raven-haired.

Once upon a time, Kagome was a little girl with platinum blonde curls and the most sparkly brown eyes one had ever seen. She had been happy despite her extremely odd hair colour and thrived in showing it off. But then one day, at the age of 7, a girl dumped a box of red dye and half a bottle of bleach in her hair and her beautiful blonde curls were fried and ruined. She had cried and cried, but to no avail, her once beautiful curls were destroyed and unrepairable.

So she improvised. Her mother chopped her hair short and took her out of school, hiring a private tutor to keep her up with her studies as her hair grew itself back out into perfection. Her friends didn't even wonder where she had gone assuming she had moved. Six months later, her hair was long and curly and back to perfection except for one small detail: it was brown.

According to her mother, brown was the nastiest of hair colours imaginable. Kagome became depressed and started moping because her hair was "shit coloured". She stopped eating and slept less, even though she was only seven years old. Her hair was a big part of her life…

After a week of this her mother calmly told her that was such a thing as hair dye. Kagome jumped for joy and danced around because her hair would be perfection again. But there was one small detail that her mother mentioned only when she had bought the hair dye: the dye was black. "You can't dye hair blonde," she had said, "only bleach it and bleach is what caused this mess in the first place, so you're going to become a raven-haired girl."

'Raven-haired…?' Kagome had wondered. The next day she found out what raven-haired meant. Her hair was pitch black. She wanted to cry at that, but her mother said that black was good. That black was far better than brown. So she believed her and dyed her hair black form then on.

That leads us to where we are today, next to a river in the feudal era, where Kagome is dying her "shit coloured" hair black.

The moral of this story kiddies is….well… there is no moral, but it sure was fun as hell to write!
