"Desperate much?" Sora teased.
"Yeah. I thought you were Kairi."
Sora frowned a bit and decided not to comment.
"Don't get all pissy now, Sora. I won't move in on your girlfriend." Riku said. "I see there's a storm rolling in. Want me to come over?"
"Nah. I'm not really that scared anymore."
Shocked silence.
"Riku?"
"You're not scared anymore?"
"Nope." The younger teen went on to explain everything his mother had told him.
"So that's what happened, huh? You...ok?"
"I guess. Now that I know what went on it's kind of put everything to rest y'know?"
"Yeah..."
"But...we could always head over to the clubhouse for a sleepover. We can reach Destiny Island before the storm if we hurry."
Riku smirked [Alone with Sora on an island. My dreams have come true.] "I'll ask my parents."
"Okay. I'll have to ask my mom too. I'll phone you in a few."
"Okay."
Both teens hung up. Sora bounded downstairs to find his mother watching TV and repairing a pair of his ripped slacks.
"Hey mom. Can I go to Destiny Island tonight?"
"With who?"
"Riku."
Sora's smiled wavered a bit as April turned to study her son. He looked around nervously as she eyed him up and down.
"Just you and Riku?"
"Yeah."
"Well..."
"Ah please mom? We've gone before and nothing went wrong."
[That's not what I'm worried about.] "Ok. Be home for lunch tomorrow."
"All right!" Sora grinned. "Thanks mom."
April sighed as her son ran upstairs. The brunette called Riku.
"Did your parents say yes?" Sora asked.
"Dad said 'no', mom said 'yes'. So yes." Riku smirked. "Meet you outside in five."
"Okay!"
The teens hung up again. Sora stuffed a change of clothes, flashlight, batteries, hair brush, and hair gel into a backpack. He went into his closet and retrieved his sleeping bag. Sora returned downstairs and kissed his mother on the cheek.
"Love yah, ma." He smiled.
"Love you too, angel. Have fun." [But not too much fun...]
The brunette smiled and put his sneakers on and left the house. Riku was waiting at the end of the walk for him.
"We gotta hurry. That storm is moving in fast." Riku said.
Sora nodded. He got his mother's bike and the two boys pedaled down to the marina. The clouds were starting to catch up with them by the time they put their boats on the water.
"We should just make it." Riku said.
"Yeah. Try not to get behind." Sora teased, rowing off.
"You're so going to get it." The silver-haired teen replied, taking off after his friend.
Sora reached Destiny Island first.
"Oh yeah!" Sora did a little victory boogie on the beach. "I so beat your ass."
"You cheated some how." Riku replied.
"Pfft. I just have superior muscle power."
That make Riku laugh out loud, almost uproariously. The brunette punched his friend in the shoulder and they both moved their boats into the storm shed. A fat drop of rain splattered on Sora's nose.
"It's starting to rain! Hurry up Riku!"
The boys ran for the clubhouse and started climbing up the ladder. True, the clubhouse was in a tree but it was sheltered by much bigger trees. If lightning were to strike it would definitely hit one of the taller trees. Sora swung his backpack into the clubhouse then pulled himself up. Riku followed suit.
"Oof!" Sora grunted as he got a backpack in the face.
"Sorry." Riku laughed.
"Broke my nose again." The younger boy teased.
Riku snorted and pulled himself up into the clubhouse. The duo unrolled their sleeping bags and turned on Riku's battery powered lantern. Outside the rain had begun. It tapped against the treehouse's windows and pounded on the roof.
"Perfect timing." The silver-haired teen smiled.
"Yup." Sora nodded. "So...tell me who you have a crush on."
"No way."
"Why not?"
"I'm not telling anyone. Ever."
"Why?" The brunette smirked. "Is it Selphie?"
Riku just sighed and pretended to dig around in his backpack for something.
"You like Selphie? Really!?"
"No! I don't want to talk about it, okay?"
Sora frowned. "What's wrong, Riku? Is it Tidus? Cause y'know...it's no big deal if you're gay."
Riku's cheeks turned bright red. "Shut up Sora!"
The brunette's frown deepened. "Fine."
"So...uhm...what do you want to do?"
"Sleep."
"It's still early."
"Yeah well...I don't feel much like talking anymore..."
Sora crawled into his sleeping bag and turned his back on Riku. The silver-haired teen bit the inside of his lip before crawling into his own sleeping bag. He turned the lantern off and stared at the ceiling. He listened to the rain for a long time before dozing off.
---------------------
"Riku."
The voice was not Sora's. It was too deep to be Sora's. It was a man's voice. Riku bolted upright and looked around. He couldn't see anything.
"Sora?" He whispered. "Sora??"
"Open the door, Riku." The voice said. "Let the darkness in."
"Who are you!?" Riku demanded. "Sora!?"
"Sora can't hear you, Riku."
It felt like ice water had started running through his veins. Riku shivered and hugged himself.
"Sora can never love you the way you love him. He'd be better off if you left."
"Shut up!!"
"Riku? Riku!!"
Sora's voice. Riku's eyes snapped open to see his worried friend leaning over him.
"You were having a bad dream..."
The silver-haired teen felt Sora's thumb run down his cheek and he then realized they were wet with tears.
"Was I crying in my sleep?" He asked.
Sora nodded and wiped Riku's other cheek.
"I'm sorry I woke you up."
"It's ok."
"I'm sorry I was such a jerk before too."
The brunette smiled. "It's ok. Really."
Riku's stomach tightened a bit as Sora leaned down close to him.
"U-uh...Sora?"
"Mm?"
The older teen froze as his friend's lips brushed across his. Fingers threaded into his hair and lips ravaged his. Riku moaned softly, pulling Sora against him tightly. The kiss was just starting to get more intense when unimaginable pain ripped through Riku's chest. The teen broke the kiss with a cry. He looked down in horror to see Sora had ripped his heart right out of his chest.
"You won't be needing this anymore." Sora said in a voice that wasn't his.
"Shit!!" Riku sat straight up and looked around.
Sora was still lying where he had fallen asleep, snoring softly. The rain was still tapping on the window and the sound of distant thunder rumbled. Riku prodded at his chest. It didn't hurt. His heart was still there, beating and healthy.
"It was all a nightmare..." The teen murmured to himself, running his hands through his sweaty hair.
He looked at the shadows and them seemed to move. Riku shuddered and scooted as close to Sora as he could. The teen curled up in his sleeping bag. He watched his friend's chest rise and fall, willing himself not to fall asleep.
To be continued....
