Sora and his friends swam nearly all morning. It was nearing lunch and their stomachs were rumbling when they decided to head back home. Riku was hoping he'd get Sora alone after lunch.
"Soooo hungry!" Selphie complained as Sora rowed her home.
"What does your mother feed you anyway? Deep-fried sugar?" Sora teased.
The girl snorted. "Actually my mother is a health freak. If she saw my candy stash she'd probably have a heart attack."
"Your mom is a health food freak?" Riku laughed as he rowed by. "I never would have guessed. Seriously."
"Hardy har har." Selphie stuck her tongue out at him.
"I never woulda guessed either..." Wakka smirked as he and Tidus rowed by on the other side.
"Me either!" Kairi chimed in from her place in the lead.
"Shush! All of you!" Selphie laughed. "It makes perfect sense! My mother makes me eat vegetables that taste like rancid dirt so I eat candy from my stash to help kill the icky dirt taste!"
Everyone laughed again as they pulled into the marina. Riku managed to catch Sora alone while the brunette was putting his boat away and he whispered to him,
"You and me, alone after lunch."
Sora just blushed and didn't reply.
"What are you guys doing after lunch?" Kairi asked, hopping on her bike.
"I have a dance lesson." Selphie replied as her laced up her rollerskates.
"Tidus and I are goin' to a movie. You guys are welcome to join us."
"That sounds like fun." Kairi smiled. "Sora? Riku? You coming too?"
Sora shook his head. "Mom wants me to clean my room."
Riku smirked. "Yeah mine too. I better get it done before my dad gets on me about it."
"Looks like it's just us then, ya?" Wakka smiled at Tidus and Kairi.
The two nodded and they all headed for their homes.
April still wasn't home when Sora went inside. The brunette made himself a grilled cheese and ham sandwich and sat in the living room to eat it. He was just finishing his sandwich off when there was a knock at the front door. He knew who it was.
"Come in, Riku."
Riku chuckled and walked into Sora's house. "How did you know it was me?"
"Just a hunch." The brunette replied, rolling his eyes.
The older teen laughed and sat beside Sora. "Mom not home?"
"No, but she saw you leaving this morning."
"Oh? What'd she say?"
"Not much."
"Nothing?"
Sora blushed. "Just that I could talk to her about anything."
"That's good." Riku nudged Sora a little bit. "You know...I've been thinking..."
"Did it hurt?"
"Silence!" The older teen laughed. "I'm trying to be serious here! So anyway...I've been thinking..."
"Yes Riku?"
"That's better. I was thinking that we should go out on a date. Like to the movies or something."
"Now?"
"No, not now! Tonight. We'll sleep over either here or at my place and sneak out to see a late show. We'll sit in the balcony even so no one will see us if they sneak out too."
Sora thought that over. "Well I don't think my mom will let me sleep over at your house now that she knows about...us."
The silver-haired teen smirked. "So you think she'll be more comfortable knowing that we're sleeping in the same room here?"
"Sure. Why not?"
Riku shook his head. Sometimes Sora was too naive and innocent for his own good.
"Nevermind. We'll sleep over here if it's ok with our parents."
"Okay so...what movie and what time?"
"Something scary and the eleven o'clock showing should be good."
Eleven? What about the shadows? Riku's mind asked.
The teen lapsed into silence and Sora frowned at him.
"Riku? Are you ok?"
Riku blinked and snapped himself out of his thoughts. "Yeah, I'm fine."
Sora didn't really look like he believed him but the brunette didn't say anything more.
April got home around supper time. She eyed Riku up and down before agreeing to let him sleep over. Riku could tell Sora's mother felt a little wary around him now and he didn't really blame her. If she knew of the dirty Sora-oriented thoughts that were swirling around in his head she'd probably kick his ass.
Well now that April has said it's ok and Sora is cooking supper it's time to convince my folks.
Riku excused himself and made his way home. His mother was sitting on the couch watching TV and his father was making supper.
"Can I sleep over at Sora's house?" He asked.
"Are you and Sora attached at the hip or something? You spend all your time with that boy." Lee replied.
"I do not." Riku replied, rolling his eyes. "I spend time with my friends. Not just Sora."
"Yes you can sleep over." Mileena said from the couch.
Lee snorted, shook his head, and muttered something about Riku being a spoiled mama's boy.
Don't I know it! Riku inwardly grinned.
"Thanks mom!" He said aloud, practically prancing over to hug her.
Mileena laughed and hugged her son. "You have to have supper here though."
"Yes ma'am." Riku replied.
"And...you have to help me up."
"Geez Ma...you're going to break my back." Riku teased.
"Riku!" Lee scolded.
Riku's mother waved her hand at her husband and laughed. "Oh lighten up, Lee. All pregnant women look like bloated whales. It's not a lost fact on me. Better to laugh about it than bitch and moan."
Lee snorted again and Riku's sides ached he was laughing so much. He hardly ever heard his mother swear. Eventually their laughter died down and Riku held his hands out to his mother. She took a hold of his hands and he pulled her to her feet.
"Thank-you, Riku. How's the back?"
"It's fine. How's your back?"
"Sore."
"You'll have to get dad to give you a mint massage."
Now that wrung a laugh from Lee. Mileena waddled over and poked him in the side.
"And what's so funny about that, Mister?" She giggled.
Riku shook his head. His parents were acting like kids. Time to leave. The silver-haired teen jogged upstairs to pack an overnight bag and phone Sora.
"Mom says I have to have dinner here." He said once he got Sora on the line.
"No problem. Just come over after supper."
"Yes that was the plan." Riku teased.
"Jerk." Sora chuckled, hanging up.
"Back at yah." Riku said into nothingness, hanging up his phone as well.
"Riku! Supper!" His father called.
Riku finished stuffing things into his overnight bag and went downstairs. He sat with his family and they had a nice, quiet meal. Riku was just finishing off the traces of his dessert when thunder rumbled quietly.
"Better get to Sora's before it starts pouring." Mileena said, kissing Riku on the cheek. "Be good and listen to April."
"I will." Riku promised.
"Have fun." Lee said.
Riku looked at his father with surprise. His father hadn't said anything like that in a long, long while.
"...Thanks. See you two tomorrow."
Mileena kissed Riku on the cheek again and he went to the front door. He laced his sneakers up, grabbed his bag, and left. The clouds overhead were dark and threatening rain. Riku didn't want to get caught in a downburst and he sprinted to Sora's house. He just jumped onto the covered front porch when it started to pour.
"Good timing Riku."
The teen was startled but he refused to let himself jump. He looked over to see Sora sitting on the porch swing.
"Thanks." He grinned.
The teen set his bag down and sat beside Sora.
"It's still humid though..." Sora said, wiping his brow with his forearm.
"Yup. Looks like it's going to be a damp night..."
The brunette sighed softly and leaned his head against Riku's shoulder. Riku smiled and they watched the lightning flash across the sky together.
