Ah, well... time to repost this, I think. It's my first and only Mononoke-hime story, and I'm kinda proud of it(short as it is...). Lessee... yes, it isa one-shot. I posted this nearly a year ago, maybe a little longer than a year, after I first watched the movie. I love this movie--I want to buy it, butI have no idea where to find it. Anyways, I took it down(but saved it) when I got into the PitaTen manga and wanted to write one-shots and Moonlight Demon. I'm finally out of my PT-craze-faze, so there's room again for my other fanfictions.
Now that I am finished with my useless story about why I removed this back in... oh, was it January? December, perhaps? I don't remember. So it's not that important. Anyways, I wish you all a good 2-5 minute reading.
Sunset on the Horizon
Monthshave passed since I began my life at the ironworks. Every night I stand here at the lookout and watch forSan to appear on the horizon. She appears near the same rock each time, so that I know when she's there. I know the wolves' howls. I know her calls. The others still jump when they hear howling, but I know that it's just her way of bringing me into view. I know she enjoys my company, and I love being around her... even if we're really not.
A silhouette dances atop the hills. I know it's San and one of her brothers. A howl filled the silence of the twilight, and a chill runs down my spine. I can't see her face or her eyes, or define where it is, exactly, that her hair begins and her face ends. They stand there for a while, staring at me. This is our silent convertaion. The hairs on the back of my neck rise as yet another howl pierces the silence.
San... dear San, you and I are the same, are we not? We both desire the survival of the forest of the Deer God. I stay here, and the ironworks, making sure that the balance between man and nature remains intact. And you remain one of the guardians of the forest. Do you still hate humans? You cannot forgive us even thought we are the same? On some level, do you hate me as well? Because I am human, too. Yet, you are human. Can you ever accept that? I don't know. I haven't spoken to you since we parted... Do you love me, as I do you?
One last howl fills thetwilight air, and I know that it is San's. I wonder what it is for. Is it "Goodnight, I love you. See you tomorrow night"? Or is it just a goodnight? Perhaps at least "I love you"?
It doesn't matter right now, because I know that I love you.
As darkness swallows the land, you disappear into the shadows. I still stand here, watching and waiting for you...
