I Thought I Knew You - - Dani Kaiba-Wheeler, aka. Siriusly137.

This is a one-shot not long after Sirius was locked up. Remus actually went to visit him in Azkaban to find out why he betrayed his friends.

Disclaimer – the usual. I am not JK, it's not my multimillion dollar book.

Sirius was staring blankly ahead, out of the cell bars in front of him. Dementors were bringing in some other shrieking soul, screaming persistently that he didn't do it. What 'it' was, Sirius didn't care.

How long had he been here? Day and night had no meaning anymore, but it couldn't have been that long – after all, he wasn't mad yet. Or was he? He didn't even know that anymore. And it didn't matter. He was stuck here forever.

Everything that had led up to this was running through his head, just as he knew they would when Dementors were around him all the time.

James dead.

Lily dead.

And Peter…

The rat.

Not Remus. Remus wasn't the spy. God, I feel terrible, Sirius thought. I accused Remus. I'm here, I've lost James, Peter's working with Voldemort, and Remus will hate me for accusing him. Not that it matters while I'm here.

Suddenly a Dementor paused directly outside his cell. A wave of coldness brushed over him, but he was too curious to care. Maybe they had discovered he was innocent?

Then a man walked towards the cell, standing beside the Dementor. His eyes were shadowy, his robes were patched and worn, but Sirius still recognised him.

'Moony,' he whispered. His friend looked a mess, but after time in Azkaban he knew he looked worse.

Remus's dark eyes flashed. 'Don't call me that.'

Sirius frowned. 'Remus, I – '

'Why did you do it?'

Sirius's eyes widened desperately. 'Remus, you don't honestly think I did this, do you?'

'I didn't,' Remus said darkly. 'But now I have no choice. And I came to find out why.'

'Remus, I didn't, it wasn't me, it was Peter – '

'Peter's dead, Sirius. You killed him.'

'No!' Sirius said desperately. 'You can't possibly believe – '

'James and Lily, Sirius. James, Lily and Peter are the proof.'

'Remus…'

'Two Marauders. Your best friend and his wife. And you nearly had their son too! Was Voldemort's promise really worth it?'

Sirius felt like collapsing. 'Remus, please…none of this is true, why would I want to join Voldemort? I don't believe all his purity of blood crap! You, of all people – '

'I thought just that,' Remus interrupted. 'If I knew why you did this, I wouldn't be here asking you.'

'I can explain it all,' Sirius said quickly.

'Go ahead,'

'I wasn't Secret Keeper at the time, Peter was, I told James to switch to him. It was Peter, Remus – '

'If any of this was true,' Sirius flinched at the coldness in his friend's voice. 'Why wasn't I told that the plan had changed?'

'Because I – thought – ' Sirius faltered. Was he really going to tell Remus that he accused him of being the spy? No, he couldn't.

Unfortunately the lack of explanation wasn't acceptable to Remus. Shaking his head, he said in a very betrayed voice, 'I thought I knew you, Sirius Black,' before he turned and began to leave.

'Moony…' Sirius cried weakly.

He wasn't aware of falling to the floor. He wasn't aware of the nearest Dementor entering the cell and roughly pulling him up to sitting position. He wasn't aware once in the night of all the other prisoners screaming in their sleep. No. All he was aware of was the image of Remus turning his back on him in disgust, which was burned into his memory, along with those seven condemning words that would undoubtedly be the last words ever shared between them:

'I thought I knew you, Sirius Black.'
