Smiling Obsidian Soul

Weeks later he tentatively picked up the book and stared at it for a little while. Just as he went to open it, he heard his guards calling him. He put the volume down reluctantly, and left the room quickly. The guards had called him for a small disturbance.

On the way back to his room, he crossed the small courtyard. He stopped under a small apple blossom tree; a gravestone stood there. A red marble headstone, engraved with:

Here Rests

Eowyn, the White Lady of Middle Earth

Beloved Wife, Sister, Daughter, and Dear Friend

A piece of Heaven, here on Earth

Little white lilies and lilacs grew around and on her grave. The grass was bright green, and, as Faramir also noted each winter, at that spot the tree and flowers were ever blooming, and the grass still grew that bright green. No snow ever stayed on the spot. He smiled, and took a rose, laying it on the stone. He then made his way indoors.

He retreated to his rooms. He got out her book again, and opened it; a handkerchief fluttered to the ground. He picked it up, gently, and put the book aside. Once more, he made his way to her room. He opened the door and went in. He carefully folded the handkerchief and laid it upon her reading table, then left as quickly as he had come. He went back to his own rooms once more, opened the book, and laid his eyes to rest upon the next entry.

Dear book (who knows why I write this),

Today, I went on a hunt. I do love to ride! My attendants did not want me to go, but I went all the same. I felt free, riding my horse and almost flying. I heard the shouts of the others, but I cared not.

I rode, and forgot all my worries. When I got back, Faramir was the only one happy. I was just about to be scolded by the staff for my wild behavior, though I do not know why I let them. I only know that I do.

When Faramir spoke up, it was with a laugh. He said, "You ride very well, milady!" and he bowed low to me, trying to be serious. We both started to laugh. He picked me off the ground and swept me away from the frowning courtiers. He put me down in the courtyard, and we went over to the bench and sat in silence. It was wonderful!

I felt I could stay like that forever, but it was broken by the guard needing him. He kissed me and took his leave. I felt sadness well up within me, for he is the only soul in this place who can make me smile. I retreated to my library and read, and then the maid came in and said that tea was served. I said I would take it in the library, and the maid seemed shocked.

Quietly, she said, "Miss, it isn't proper!" I nearly snapped! See, that is what I am so sick of! 'Oh, you can't! It's not ladylike! Milady, that isn't proper!' I am a shield maiden of Rohan! I think I should know what is proper! Well, I must go fight this out...

Eowyn

Faramir stared at the page. He could not believe his own staff had treated his beloved like that! He sighed; he had watched her in those final days, yet he had known nothing of what would take place. He hadn't noticed anything was wrong! She was the best actress ever, he decided with a little laugh.

He stood and went to her room and looked, just looked, upon it. That's all he did these days...it was almost a hobby of his. He closed his eyes and imagined her there, standing at the window, looking down upon the grounds. Dressed in white, and looking lovely as she always did.

He shook himself out of the vision and sighed, going back to his room a little more broken-hearted.

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
