One Last Whisper

We sat on the hardwood floor with no light but the one emitting from the tip of my wand. Lily sat with Harry in her lap. The baby boy was peacefully sleeping, untroubled by our present situation.

Oh Harry, I'm so sorry.

Lily sighed and leaned her head on my shoulder. Her face looked scared, but determined. In all the years that I had known her, she had never been one to break down. I kissed her auburn head softly. Lily tilted her face up to me, her green eyes gleaming brilliantly.

"Will you talk to me?" she whispered.

"I wouldn't know what to say," I answered sadly, resting my chin on her head.

"Oh, the great James Potter has nothing to say," she whispered back jokingly, though there was no laughter in her words. Lily closed her eyes.

"Yeah, well," I said, knitting my eyebrows, remembering how pig-headed I was when Lily and I were in school.

"Hmmm," Lily whispered again reminiscently, "you used to call me 'Evans' then." She smiled. "But I'm 'Potter' now. I'd never have thought it possible…"

We heard the front door blast open in the other room with a bang. We jumped up. Tears dripped slowly from Lily's pale face.

"Lily! Take Harry and go!" I said hurriedly.

"James," she choked, "I love you. I'll love you even after I die!"

"Go!" I rushed. Lily held Harry close to her as she ran upstairs to hide.

And Lord Voldemort came to face me.

"You know why I have come," his cold, high-pitched voice pierced my heart. I stood bravely before him.

"We won't surrender to you," I said, hoping that Lily had found a hiding place, or had even escaped with Harry.

Voldemort's cackle shook the air itself. It was unearthly, unreal.

"Avada Kedavra!" He shouted.

Lily, I thought just before the green jet of light hit me, I will love you always, even as I am dying now, and forever after.

And the world fell before my eyes.
