All around him his crew worked diligently going above and way beyond their duties to help this planet that Jim himself had only been to once before during shore leave. Back then it'd been beautiful but now it was in shambles. Roads were destroyed, houses looked like burnt out carcasses, the waterbeds were dry as bones and crops dead or dying. That's the part that got Jim.

Not all away missions turned out bad. Some were good. Peaceful negotiations on a beautiful planet with natives that joked with the away team and offered their friendship and acceptance into the Federation. Some away missions came and went with no casualties, no emergencies and no panic. Routine and borderline boring... This was not one of those away missions.

Jim Kirk was a narcissistic, egotistical asshole that didn't need saving... Until, of course, he did.

The guy on the ground couldn't be older than twenty two or three. His hair must have been blonde at one point but now looked black as blood caked it down. Leonard didn't expect him to open his eyes so he pulled out his phone ready to call for an ambulance when a hand shot up grabbing his wrist in a hard grip making Len jump and try to jerk away. He couldn't. The hold was too tight.

"Bones!" She heard Kirk yell as she came around the corner to the transport room. Dr. McCoy stood on the pad with a large bag clutched in tight to his person. Baker slid into the room. Here she could see the transporter, exits and Kirk's anguished face. He must still have drugs in his system, he swayed on his feet. "Where are you going?"

Dr. McCoy is trapped in engineering as it begins flooding after an accident aboard the Enterprise. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Scotty work together to save their drowning friend.

Space... there's a lot of it: And when you're a low-rank, inexperienced red-shirt it seems a whole lot bigger.

Jim's mother comes aboard the Enterprise, much to Jim's dismay. Can Bones and Spock convince him to begin repairing the badly damaged relationship? Disclaimer: I don't own Star Trek. Prequel to Brothers.
